About Me

Oh, hi there. Didn’t see you enter. Anyways, welcome to my humble little blog. For those of you not familiar with who I am, the name’s Brian. I’m 24 years old and hail from Findlay, Ohio. I work at the local newspaper here as a copy editor, putting my four long years of college to actual use. Kind of. I think.

For those of you who might recognize me from elsewhere, I work as Assistant Gaming Editor over at Blogcritics Gaming and as Features Editor over at Tomopop. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because I get to do a lot of cool shit with a lot of cool people.

I've been gaming since the relatively young age of around 3 and I've played plenty of games, both good and bad. I'm continuously expanding my gaming collection, which has become more of an archive in recent years as I'm focusing on collecting older, less well-known titles. You'd honestly be surprised on what people are missing out on in bargain bins...

Other than gaming, I love anime, manga, sports, movies, TV, and a whole lot more. I also happen to have something of a legendary love for Cammy, to the point that I am the site's unofficial official Cammy fanboy. And yes, I do play as her in Street Fighter and do so quite well, too.

Also, I am Chad Concelmo's B.F.F., my prize for coming in first in The Great Retro Quiz .18 - ActRaiser. Accept no substitutes. Not even Aerox.

Rumor Bonus: Nintendo developing holographic storage?
Brian Szabelski | 10:39 PM on 07.30.2008 20 comments

Score another one for the Patent Office and some NeoGAFfers. Along with digging up news on Jet Grind Radio, they have uncovered an interesting patent detailing a joint research agreement between your friendly neighborhood Nintendo and InPhase Technologies. The agreement apparently covers "a device comprising a spatial flexure for a scanner used in angle multiplexing of holographic data." In other words, Nintendo is working on holographic storage, likely for their next console. Holographic storage is fairly complicated to explain, but in short, it just means that the next Wii might be able to hold a shit ton of information. Like 500 GB. Or greater.

What does this mean for us? Probably an expensive next console from Nintendo and an explanation to where all their Wii Play and Wii Fit money is going. How they'll use it, though, I don't have an idea, because there are a lot of possibilities.

Check out the NeoGAF thread here, which offers some long explanations of just what holographic storage is. Of course, this could mean nothing, but remember: they had a partnership with a gyroscope company before the Wii came out.

Edit: Yes, I screwed up and put MB where GB should have been. Pay no attention because I wrote that at 1:30 in the morning and I wasn't paying attention. It's 500 GB, obviously not 500 MB.

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

...I don't even know how to begin comprehending this.

I'm with Tubatic. I can't tell if you're being facetious about 500 MB, or if you just made a typo.

Doesn't the Wii already hold 512 MB?

I think he was kidding about the storage thing. We all just like making fun of the Wii's lack of storage.

I just read about that holographic stuff. crazy stuff. If they can make RAM out of it, that would probably skyrocket processing speeds. Or so my soft understanding of computer hardware would have me believe.

I want to get really excited about this info. I'm just not too sure what to make of it. It's a nice start to something though.

Yes Dexter, he was being facetious.

Holographic storage could mean an ordinary DVD could hold up to 1TB of data, but it's been a while since I read up on the whole thing, so maybe the research has changed since then.

An expensive next console from Nintendo? I'm sorry, but I fail to see the logic in that. The money from Wii and DS is going in to investor's pockets and into new technology and games, but they certainly wouldn't be foolish enough to try and release an expensive console next time around. The Wii is proof that price matters to the consumer. $250 is the magic number for a brand new console. Any more puts it slightly out of reach for the casual fans, something Nintendo doesn't want to do.
