About Me

Oh, hi there. Didn’t see you enter. Anyways, welcome to my humble little blog. For those of you not familiar with who I am, the name’s Brian. I’m 24 years old and hail from Findlay, Ohio. I work at the local newspaper here as a copy editor, putting my four long years of college to actual use. Kind of. I think.

For those of you who might recognize me from elsewhere, I work as Assistant Gaming Editor over at Blogcritics Gaming and as Features Editor over at Tomopop. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because I get to do a lot of cool shit with a lot of cool people.

I've been gaming since the relatively young age of around 3 and I've played plenty of games, both good and bad. I'm continuously expanding my gaming collection, which has become more of an archive in recent years as I'm focusing on collecting older, less well-known titles. You'd honestly be surprised on what people are missing out on in bargain bins...

Other than gaming, I love anime, manga, sports, movies, TV, and a whole lot more. I also happen to have something of a legendary love for Cammy, to the point that I am the site's unofficial official Cammy fanboy. And yes, I do play as her in Street Fighter and do so quite well, too.

Also, I am Chad Concelmo's B.F.F., my prize for coming in first in The Great Retro Quiz .18 - ActRaiser. Accept no substitutes. Not even Aerox.

RetRose Contest: Perfect Dark
Brian Szabelski | 9:24 PM on 03.31.2008 5 comments

You see, there’s this RetRose Tinted Corrective Lenses Competition going on, and well, I figured I’d talk a little bit about a game I used to play a lot: Perfect Dark.

By 2000, things had…well, they weren’t great between my sisters and myself. We all played different games and rarely played together. We all got along when we needed to, but when it came to gaming, either nobody wanted to play or my sisters were fighting with each other over something. The schism had occurred during the late Super Nintendo era and had carried over into the Nintendo 64 era. Nothing, it seems, would bring us together for more than a few minutes, and only Super Smash Bros. would even do that.

That was… until Perfect Dark came out. My sister had actually rented the game from our local Family Video, which was just up the street. My mom apparently did not notice the Teen rating or she may have been a little more hesitant, but alas, Perfect Dark fell into our lap.

Now, as expected, for the first day or so, I was barred from playing the game while my sister was in there, and she seemed content to never let me play it. I sighed and went back to playing on my Game Boy, figuring that I’d never get to play this awesome-looking game.

But the next day, while my sisters were playing multiplayer with each other, one of them complained that the other wasn’t being fair, and she wanted someone else to play instead. That, of course, is where I came in, and as the controller was somewhat reluctantly handed to me, something happened. Sure, they decided to try and team up on me, but for the first time in years, the three of us were sitting in the same room, playing the same game, without tearing each other’s throats out.

For that entire week we had the game, we were like that, which must have been nice for my mom. We played multiplayer against each other and against the game’s A.I. bots without causing a fight, able to enjoy each other’s company.

Sadly, when the game went back, the playing together seemed to end. We all went back off on our separate ways until my sister found a copy dirt-cheap at a KB Toys liquidation sale. Once she popped that cartridge back in, we all started playing together more often once again.

Today, we still play together, though not as much as during the days of Perfect Dark. Because we’re all in different places now, we aren’t always together too often, But when we are, we’re peaceful and actually play together. Without Perfect Dark, none of that would have ever happened.

I had 2 older gaming sisters also.

The only thing that kept me from playing against My sisters was that I didn't like to loose a lot. I lacked what some call sportsmanship. I remember I had some fun with them when GoldenEye came out though.

Sounds nice. My older brother and I never got along, and games only made it worse. My younger brother on the other hand, well, he's an avid Dtoid reader. So we always got along good.

I have an unrequited love for Perfect Dark (I never owned it), but I can definitely attest to its greatness. Smash Brothers was the only multiplayer game my brother and I could play for extended periods, but most of my PD play occurred at a friend's house anyway.

i remember doing that with Goldeneye. we'd go over to my neighbors house and there would be like 8 of us rotating in and out, shooting the crap out of each other.

i miss my youth.

I convinced my parents to buy Perfect Dark for me as an early birthday present. I opened it up and the cartridge was broken. Nothing loaded. Nintendo required me to send the game back to them in a special envelope it took me 8 months to return to them (no lie). By the time I finally got it back from them (after another 5 weeks) I had pretty much missed the PD hype that my friends all went through.

Until the next summer came around. I popped that gem back in and was blown away by how deep the multiplayer was (not to mention how cool the story was). I logged something like 200 hours playing by myself against AI bots until I invited my buddy to come over and play along with me. By the end of the summer I had over 500 hours on my profile.

Perfect Dark still stands as my favorite shooter of all time. Glad to see it brought good things to you, too.
