About Me

Oh, hi there. Didn’t see you enter. Anyways, welcome to my humble little blog. For those of you not familiar with who I am, the name’s Brian. I’m 24 years old and hail from Findlay, Ohio. I work at the local newspaper here as a copy editor, putting my four long years of college to actual use. Kind of. I think.

For those of you who might recognize me from elsewhere, I work as Assistant Gaming Editor over at Blogcritics Gaming and as Features Editor over at Tomopop. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because I get to do a lot of cool shit with a lot of cool people.

I've been gaming since the relatively young age of around 3 and I've played plenty of games, both good and bad. I'm continuously expanding my gaming collection, which has become more of an archive in recent years as I'm focusing on collecting older, less well-known titles. You'd honestly be surprised on what people are missing out on in bargain bins...

Other than gaming, I love anime, manga, sports, movies, TV, and a whole lot more. I also happen to have something of a legendary love for Cammy, to the point that I am the site's unofficial official Cammy fanboy. And yes, I do play as her in Street Fighter and do so quite well, too.

Also, I am Chad Concelmo's B.F.F., my prize for coming in first in The Great Retro Quiz .18 - ActRaiser. Accept no substitutes. Not even Aerox.

Nintendo's bigger plans?
Brian Szabelski | 9:13 PM on 03.26.2009 7 comments

When Nintendo quietly announced the Virtual Console Arcade, I was excited. Yes, finally, arcade games that never quite made it or the arcade versions of games that were superior to their console versions on my Wii. With the new storage solution, it could only mean good things.

But then, I thought about it some more. Nintendo never acts without reason. But why would they do this? I thought for a whole 5 minutes over that question after it popped into my head. The answer perhaps startled me: they may be prepping to release the legendary Vs. arcade games in the future.

Why? Well, not all the games were simply two player versions of Nintendo classics. Several had major tweaks that changed the game's difficulty or game play a bit, making those ideal candidates for Virtual Console re-releases. Plus, there's the fact that they still are a bit buzzworthy, thanks in large part to the Omegathon's final game from PAX 08, Vs. Excitebike. So, one might wonder if interest+newness=profit in Nintendo's mind, and that this arcade announcement is just laying the framework for something bigger. I think, at least, that could very well be the case.

If that is the case, I know I'd definitely be interested in a few of the Vs. arcade games, including Vs. Excitebike. How about the rest of you?

Holy shit, the Vs. games would be absolutely amazing. I haven't played any of those in years, I'd love to play them again.

I still remember playing Super Mario Bros. Vs., and finding out they took the Minus World trick out. I'd love to get ahold of some of these.

Wasn't The Goonies game only available in the states via Play Choice 10?

That's something I want.

@Jonathan,

Yes sir, you are correct. It was released in Japan as a full-fledged title, but only made it to the U.S. via the Vs. arcade and PlayChoice-10 cabinets.

Ah, I thought this post was about Nintendo's plot for world domination.

A brand new online excite bike would amazing, hell the create a stage aspect alone would be amazing.

If you mean the NES excitebike but with online then no, nostalgia is all well and good but I would much rather have something new and many games you think off fondly now have probably not aged well, the genesis collection taught me as such.

I'm not interested in playing a 25 year old game just because it now has online play and excitebike was the very first game I EVER played so its got a special place in my heart but still, I would rather have something new.
