About Me

Oh, hi there. Didn’t see you enter. Anyways, welcome to my humble little blog. For those of you not familiar with who I am, the name’s Brian. I’m 24 years old and hail from Findlay, Ohio. I work at the local newspaper here as a copy editor, putting my four long years of college to actual use. Kind of. I think.

For those of you who might recognize me from elsewhere, I work as Assistant Gaming Editor over at Blogcritics Gaming and as Features Editor over at Tomopop. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because I get to do a lot of cool shit with a lot of cool people.

I've been gaming since the relatively young age of around 3 and I've played plenty of games, both good and bad. I'm continuously expanding my gaming collection, which has become more of an archive in recent years as I'm focusing on collecting older, less well-known titles. You'd honestly be surprised on what people are missing out on in bargain bins...

Other than gaming, I love anime, manga, sports, movies, TV, and a whole lot more. I also happen to have something of a legendary love for Cammy, to the point that I am the site's unofficial official Cammy fanboy. And yes, I do play as her in Street Fighter and do so quite well, too.

Also, I am Chad Concelmo's B.F.F., my prize for coming in first in The Great Retro Quiz .18 - ActRaiser. Accept no substitutes. Not even Aerox.

NBA Street and SSX = Dead for now
Brian Szabelski | 10:50 PM on 10.25.2008 15 comments

Stop me if this is old, but it appears that two of EA Sports Big's franchises are gone and not coming back any time soon. In a recent interview with Peter Moore, NBA Street was confirmed to be on hiatus, while SSX was seemingly lumped in, too.

Believe it or not, the story doesn't come from IGN or Kotaku, but ESPN the Magazine and their gaming writer, former IGN Sports Editor Jon Robinson. Here's what Moore told ESPN:

-----------

"We'll still do traditional sports, but we're going to do them a different way," he told me. "Street is a good example. We built a new Freestyle brand to do different things, and we also need to build our own intellectual properties. We rely on other people's IP for everything we do and we need to develop some new things. In the old days we had things like SSX that were our own intellectual property, but since then we've kind of moved away from that. We need a mixture of experiences that are not only for the hardcore, 'it's in the game' crowd. But if Wii Sports has taught us anything, it's that people will sit there and play big head tennis all day long. We need to be able to tap into that audience. We need to have something for that sports fan who might not necessarily be a sports gamer, but who wants that 15-minute experience without having to struggle on how to use the controller."

-----------

So, there you have it. Considering that NBA Street had become something of a joke and that SSX was so terribly done on the Wii, I won't miss either. How about you guys and gals?

Hey now...I loved SSX Blur. I thought the controls were great. Game could've been fleshed out more but I enjoyed it.

No NBA Street saddens me though. Vol. 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, even topping NBA Jam for my arcade bball fix

I will miss "Homecourt"... My fave sport is BBall.
(( Even though 2k Series is tits. ))

But i won't miss "NFL Tour"... &
I will not purchase "Fifa Street"!

& NHL '09, I hear; pretty much sealed the deal on the "Hitz" label.

I hope they bring some fresh eyes of quality to their new properties.

NBA street 2 was the pinnacle of basketball games on any video game system in history. I sold NBA Jam TE because I no longer needed it.
EA killed the franchise because "fans" complained there wasn't enough realism to make it entertaining.
So here's the hint EA, your recent IP's are doing well because they aren't based in reality. Make more games with impossible scenarios and you will make billions. Add realism and you will ruin every product you own.

There's an easy way to revive SSX, just change the vehicle (say for example, ATVs) and give the development over to Blackrock...oh wait, I just described Pure.

....I don't get it. I'm a gamer who hates sports but enjoyed the hell out of NBA Street and SSX. (Well...NBA Street 1 and 2. 3 and after just sucked.)

so now instead of actually being different, we're "following the status quo" by trying to copy or outdo the wii in exactly what they do.

I tell ya....EA BIG was what made me believe EA had some good left in them years ago.

"Hey now...I loved SSX Blur. I thought the controls were great. Game could've been fleshed out more but I enjoyed it."

SSX Blur was a pile of shit. Blur did so many things wrong: Character redesigns, horrible control scheme (Yes half working uber tricks and waggle = fail), reused tracks, and a laggy framerate... The frame rate was unforgiveable since the tracks (Happiness / Snow Jam for example) looked 20x better in SSX 3 which was on a less powerful platform. SSX Blur seemed to have fog / short draw distances everywhere.

I mean anything blur did the previous games did better in every way... Especially considering the tracks in blur were just pulled out of 3 and On Tour and stuffed into blur... When SSX 3 and On Tour were better games.

Which raises the question: Why play Blur at all? No new content combined with worse gameplay. Blur was clearly put together just to make a quick buck and I haven't bought an EA title since. They screwed me out of $60.

The only credit I'll give to blur is that Junkie XL created an awesome sound track. The game itself however is shit and the Montreal studio should be ashamed of themselves for what they did to the Vancouver based IP.

I swear to God, if SSX is killed indefinitely, I can't be held responsible for the horrible things I will do. I will tear the fucking company down. They will suffer, every last fucking one of them.

*ahem*............sorry.

Also, EA Sports BIG was killed off more or less a while ago. I think they're now EA Freestyle, whose first game was Facebreaker.

Yeah, abandon all hope for that studio.

if Facebreaker is what to expect in later additions of NBA Street and SSX, then it's too fucking late.

i'm with Ron on this one. Don't even say stuff about not bringing back SSX and old school NBA Street.

I enjoyed Blur, although a lot of that might have to do with the fact that I skipped On Tour. I also didn't have any problems at all using the waggle, worked perfectly for me.

I was told that SSX Blur was pretty good, though I never played it. Regardless, I wouldn't mind SSX4 on the 360, if it were to ever come out. NBA Street was never my thing.
