About Me

Oh, hi there. Didn’t see you enter. Anyways, welcome to my humble little blog. For those of you not familiar with who I am, the name’s Brian. I’m 24 years old and hail from Findlay, Ohio. I work at the local newspaper here as a copy editor, putting my four long years of college to actual use. Kind of. I think.

For those of you who might recognize me from elsewhere, I work as Assistant Gaming Editor over at Blogcritics Gaming and as Features Editor over at Tomopop. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because I get to do a lot of cool shit with a lot of cool people.

I've been gaming since the relatively young age of around 3 and I've played plenty of games, both good and bad. I'm continuously expanding my gaming collection, which has become more of an archive in recent years as I'm focusing on collecting older, less well-known titles. You'd honestly be surprised on what people are missing out on in bargain bins...

Other than gaming, I love anime, manga, sports, movies, TV, and a whole lot more. I also happen to have something of a legendary love for Cammy, to the point that I am the site's unofficial official Cammy fanboy. And yes, I do play as her in Street Fighter and do so quite well, too.

Also, I am Chad Concelmo's B.F.F., my prize for coming in first in The Great Retro Quiz .18 - ActRaiser. Accept no substitutes. Not even Aerox.

My Mega Man 9 Impressions So Far...
Brian Szabelski | 11:12 PM on 09.24.2008 15 comments

... Ow.

That's the result of this game ass-raping me over and over again.

Yes, Mega Man 9 is most certainly difficult and rivals F-Zero GX's infamous story mode as the single most difficult and painful thing I have played in the last 10 years. It likely even exceeds it. There is absolutely no room for error in this game. It appears Capcom certainly listened to the complaints of people that games were too easy.

However, with all that aside, Mega Man 9 is a wonderful throwback to the old days of gaming, and not just in the sense of graphics and sound. Maybe it's the simplistic controls, the difficulty, or some force I don't know exists, but this doesn't feel like a game from 2008 at all. I almost did a double take and checked to make sure I hadn't bought Mega Man 2 off the Wii Shop Channel instead.

The inclusion of achievements for the game is actually pretty cool, though I wish you could do something more with them on the Wii. The massive amounts of DLC, too, kind of irks me, though Proto Man is just too damn cool to possibly pass up.

As for how far I got in the game... Jewel Man. I beat Gravity Man, saved, and died trying to get to Jewel Man. So that's my goal for tomorrow at a minimum, if not getting through a few more Robot Masters after that.

If you own a Wii... buy this. Even if you have a 360. This is the way it was meant to be played, folks.

It's a great game. I finished it last night, and enjoyed every second of it.

Videos on Youtube should aid you. I know they helped me for the older games.

Trust me Nihon, after a few weeks you'll have the game all but mastered, and you'll back on this blog and laugh.

I hope that's true, Jonny. I'm in the same boat as Nihon. Mostly I'm having trouble learning boss patterns. It takes a lot of repetition on them to get them down, and if you've only got a few lives by the time you get to them, it starts becoming very time consuming.

The Boss battles are WAY harder than anything from Mega Man 1-6. Is like getting bosses from the ZX series but in 8-bit, which makes sense.

Believe me, my first night with the game consisted of throwing myself against bosses and stages until I started to learn patterns, figureout weakness weapons and otherwise failing for about an hour. By now, I can definitely see myself getting that speed run achievement in the next few weeks.

It's brutal, yes, but at the same time it never feels unfair. That's a fine line to walk, but this game does it brilliantly... you know that if you can do things just a little bit better next time, you can make it, you can get farther. That's why this game is so special.

Yeah...no thanks. I'm getting it on PSN over both the 360 and Wii.

Yeah, Jewel man's level is really hard, but the boss itself isn't that hard. Just keep trying :D

Fwhipple: Yeah, he means Galaxy man.

Galaxy Man's stage is probably the easiest and a good place to start.

I beat Concrete Man this morning. Why did you start on Gravity Man first? Did some reading up on whose weapons are effective against whom?
