About Me

Oh, hi there. Didn’t see you enter. Anyways, welcome to my humble little blog. For those of you not familiar with who I am, the name’s Brian. I’m 24 years old and hail from Findlay, Ohio. I work at the local newspaper here as a copy editor, putting my four long years of college to actual use. Kind of. I think.

For those of you who might recognize me from elsewhere, I work as Assistant Gaming Editor over at Blogcritics Gaming and as Features Editor over at Tomopop. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because I get to do a lot of cool shit with a lot of cool people.

I've been gaming since the relatively young age of around 3 and I've played plenty of games, both good and bad. I'm continuously expanding my gaming collection, which has become more of an archive in recent years as I'm focusing on collecting older, less well-known titles. You'd honestly be surprised on what people are missing out on in bargain bins...

Other than gaming, I love anime, manga, sports, movies, TV, and a whole lot more. I also happen to have something of a legendary love for Cammy, to the point that I am the site's unofficial official Cammy fanboy. And yes, I do play as her in Street Fighter and do so quite well, too.

Also, I am Chad Concelmo's B.F.F., my prize for coming in first in The Great Retro Quiz .18 - ActRaiser. Accept no substitutes. Not even Aerox.

My 2008 GotY finalists, plus community involvement
Brian Szabelski | 1:11 PM on 12.24.2008 7 comments

Well, it's that time of the year again. Time for everyone to parade out their end of the year awards, and I'm no different. But before I reveal all of the winners (which I can't - I haven't written up all of the awards yet!), I'll give you all something of a prologue, my best games on each console and my best multiplatform title over the past year.

Last year, Super Mario Galaxy took home top honors as the 2007 Game of the Year, edging out The Orange Box and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. This year, though, the field is even bigger, and thus, the process was a lot longer than I expected.

I've whittled each console/handheld's library for 2008 down to one game that was the best of the best. Since we've also got a category for multiplatform titles, any game released on more than one specific console was not included in the console-specific decisions. Each of these games, along with the multiplatform title, are eligible for the Overall Game of the Year award for 2008.

After many hours of thinking and making back and forth decisions, I'm finally ready to unveil my 2008 Games of the Year on each console and in the multiplatform category. They are:

Xbox 360: Gears of War 2

Playstation 3: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Wii: Boom Blox

Nintendo DS: The World Ends With You

Playstation Portable: Patapon

Playstation 2: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4

PC/Mac/Linux: Spore

iPod/iPhone: Song Summoner: The Unsung Heroes

Multiplatform: Fallout 3 (Xbox 360/Playstation 3/PC)

These nine games are the finalists for 2009 Game of the Year, which will be unveiled along with the rest of the awards in a few days. However, that's not all, because there are two more awards I must mention, ones you will play a part in:

Community Moment of the Year

-and-

Story of the Year (not the band)

For these two new awards, it's up to you to pick the winners. I'll put up an official vote thread later (so don't post your picks just yet) but the awards are pretty much self-explanatory: you pick the community moment of the year and the best story Destructoid has done throughout the entire year of 2008. One vote per person, with votes being taken up until the last second I post my awards sometime next week. More info on this will come later, but for the community award, the inaugural winner will be forever immortalized in a special way. Trust me, you'll find out how. ;)

Let the debate/discussion/angry ranting begin!

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

Boom Blox? Srsly? I don't get why it's gotten all that praise from everyone. I got it and finished it and was bored by the end of it.

Anyway...from those I'd say MGS4 but TWEWY is sooooo close.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
