About Me

Oh, hi there. Didn’t see you enter. Anyways, welcome to my humble little blog. For those of you not familiar with who I am, the name’s Brian. I’m 24 years old and hail from Findlay, Ohio. I work at the local newspaper here as a copy editor, putting my four long years of college to actual use. Kind of. I think.

For those of you who might recognize me from elsewhere, I work as Assistant Gaming Editor over at Blogcritics Gaming and as Features Editor over at Tomopop. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because I get to do a lot of cool shit with a lot of cool people.

I've been gaming since the relatively young age of around 3 and I've played plenty of games, both good and bad. I'm continuously expanding my gaming collection, which has become more of an archive in recent years as I'm focusing on collecting older, less well-known titles. You'd honestly be surprised on what people are missing out on in bargain bins...

Other than gaming, I love anime, manga, sports, movies, TV, and a whole lot more. I also happen to have something of a legendary love for Cammy, to the point that I am the site's unofficial official Cammy fanboy. And yes, I do play as her in Street Fighter and do so quite well, too.

Also, I am Chad Concelmo's B.F.F., my prize for coming in first in The Great Retro Quiz .18 - ActRaiser. Accept no substitutes. Not even Aerox.

Mass Effect movie thoughts from a Mass Effect fan
Brian Szabelski | 11:35 PM on 09.18.2008 12 comments

So by now, you've heard that Avi Arad has picked up the rights to the Mass Effect franchise for possibly making them into a film. I am a huge fan of this series, and I am eagerly looking forward to Mass Effect 2. Arad has a track record of doing good work, so I guess we can be "thankful" the guy who produced Iron Man is doing this instead of Uwe Boll.

Unfortunately, I am not in a good mood right now. Far from it. So when I look at the idea of a Mass Effect movie, I facepalmed and sighed. Part of what makes the experience so great is that you can tailor the story to your liking, and taking that away I think hurts things. Yes, the story is one of my favorites of 2007, and my other favorite story from a game (Kane and Lynch, believe it or not) is being made into a film, but please... just pass on this.

If we're forced to see this, though here's what needs to happen:

The only way this is at all saved is if BioWare's Drew Karpyshyn is allowed to write the majority of the script and oversees the entire story part of the project. He did a fantastic job with the game and the novel he wrote. Putting it in anyone else's hands is foolhardy and will lead to utter failure.

As for actors, no on Vin Diesel as Shepard. Just no, no, no. He was a great Riddick, yes, but Shepard is not Riddick. B-Radicate suggested Matthew Fox. He could be acceptable, but I will still pass on him as Shepard. I have to think over who exactly would fit each role well, or perhaps, they could make it a CGI film and use the Mass Effect cast. Oh, and if Seth Green is not Joker and Keith David is not Captain Anderson, this will be terrible.

Also, this needs to be something that expands the Mass Effect story in a way the games have not and cannot. Do not just take the first two games and make a movie out of them. That would be an awful idea. That's why Karpyshyn's involvement is so vital: this is his universe.

All in all, I don't want this to be made. What do you guys think?

P.S. - If any of you get me the opportunity to meet Drew Karpyshyn, I will love you forever. Seriously, the man has my dream job.

I suppose it wouldn't bother me if it was a prequel to the games, or a side story. Games do not translate well to movies (directly).

As much as I love this game and don't support a movie, I just have to ask, why should we be "tankful" that the guy who produced Iron Man gets control of this?

@Blehman: uh-oh, typo. Let me fix it.

I think I've been through this before, I don't remember when though, so I will say it again...

Lena Heady needs to play Ashley Williams.

Maybe ol' Viggo Mortenson or either of the Prison Break guys, Dominic Purcell or the other dude, could play Shepard. They both have shaved heads and stubble.

Also, I know what you mean about your own tailored experience. I really don't want to play through the game as a different Shepard just to see the "bad guy" stuff.

The first time through was so god damn good, that I wouldn't want it to be remembered any differently.

I could see a movie shitting all over my personal version of Mass Effect for sure.

I would like to see it in a similar vein as the Mass Effect books. I.E., in the same universe, perhaps even including several of the characters from the game, but staying away from Shepard and Co. so as not to step on the game's toes. The books did an excellent job of this, and I don't see why a movie would have to be different.

I kind of think Mass Effect was trying to be both a epic cinematic style game AND a open ended free roaming rpg game, and those goals really got in the way of each other. So i think a movie could be pretty cool.

I agree with you on the casting though. Vin Diesel wouldnt suit the role of shepard, and it would be just plain stupid not to use the existing actors from the game.

Matthew Fox should definitely play Shepard... everytime I look at the character (stock male design), he reminds me of Fox.

I dunno. I could see them fairly successfully streamlining the plot of Mass Effect into something 2 hours long and satisfying to watch. Too many variables to predict how it'll actually come out, but I'll be optimistic for now. Strikes me as a better candidate for movie adaption than most games.

Yeah, I also really liked both Mass Effect novels and could easily see Drew Karpyshyn penning this into a great movie.
