About Me

Oh, hi there. Didn’t see you enter. Anyways, welcome to my humble little blog. For those of you not familiar with who I am, the name’s Brian. I’m 24 years old and hail from Findlay, Ohio. I work at the local newspaper here as a copy editor, putting my four long years of college to actual use. Kind of. I think.

For those of you who might recognize me from elsewhere, I work as Assistant Gaming Editor over at Blogcritics Gaming and as Features Editor over at Tomopop. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because I get to do a lot of cool shit with a lot of cool people.

I've been gaming since the relatively young age of around 3 and I've played plenty of games, both good and bad. I'm continuously expanding my gaming collection, which has become more of an archive in recent years as I'm focusing on collecting older, less well-known titles. You'd honestly be surprised on what people are missing out on in bargain bins...

Other than gaming, I love anime, manga, sports, movies, TV, and a whole lot more. I also happen to have something of a legendary love for Cammy, to the point that I am the site's unofficial official Cammy fanboy. And yes, I do play as her in Street Fighter and do so quite well, too.

Also, I am Chad Concelmo's B.F.F., my prize for coming in first in The Great Retro Quiz .18 - ActRaiser. Accept no substitutes. Not even Aerox.

Mario's voice actor wanted to do Link, too
Brian Szabelski | 1:00 AM on 11.16.2009 10 comments

There's always been a lot of talk about Link one day having a voice or not, and as it turns out, one of Nintendo's most notable voices was supportive of the idea of giving Link a voice. Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario, Wario and many other characters, recently gave an interview where he talked about his experience in campaigning to do the voice of the hero of Hyrule.

According to Martinet: “I spoke to Mr. Miyamoto and said: “I wanna be Link, I wanna be Link”, and Miyamoto told me that Link isn’t going to have a voice; he is going to stay the way he is. Of course Mr. Miyamoto is always right! The way it works right now is the way it is supposed to be. It’s the genius of Miyamoto and he knows just the right formula for making his games more fun and more exciting. For example in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, If things slowed down for Mario to express his inner feelings it just wouldn’t work and this way it keeps our hearts pounding with enthusiasm.”

Honestly, I'm glad things stayed the way. Silent Link isn't bad, but I just don't think Charles, as good of a job as he does with the Mario characters, would have done well as Link. Then again, we'll never know.

So, what do you think, Dtoid community? Would it have worked for you to have Charles Martinet voice Link, or do you prefer him as is?

The guy just makes the same voice for most of his characters and alters them just slightly. I don't think I want to hear that same voice on my Link.

IT'S A-ME, LINKIO.

Nah, doesn't have the same ring to it.

I know I'm probably the minority but I would love it if Link got a voice. Not this guy's voice at all but a voice in general. Just your generic RPG boy hero voice would do.

After so long of HAAH HAHH SKAAAAAAANK, i'm not in favor of an actual voice. They had their chance in the N64 days, the fact he makes vocalizations occasionally is enough for me.

Well, I already grew to see Link as a silent guy, but I would accept it only, ooooooonlllyyyy if it sounds ok.

I don't see how giving Link a voice would have improved any of the Zelda games I've played, so I don't see this as being necessary. Mario doesn't exactly say much himself, and everyone knew Sonic started getting silly when he started talking. I think it's best to keep Link mute.

Link's voice should only be heard in my mind!!!

Only way I'm okay with Link having a voice is if it's done by James Earl Jones.

Wait.

That's awesome. Do it, Nintendo. Do it now.
