About Me

Oh, hi there. Didn’t see you enter. Anyways, welcome to my humble little blog. For those of you not familiar with who I am, the name’s Brian. I’m 24 years old and hail from Findlay, Ohio. I work at the local newspaper here as a copy editor, putting my four long years of college to actual use. Kind of. I think.

For those of you who might recognize me from elsewhere, I work as Assistant Gaming Editor over at Blogcritics Gaming and as Features Editor over at Tomopop. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because I get to do a lot of cool shit with a lot of cool people.

I've been gaming since the relatively young age of around 3 and I've played plenty of games, both good and bad. I'm continuously expanding my gaming collection, which has become more of an archive in recent years as I'm focusing on collecting older, less well-known titles. You'd honestly be surprised on what people are missing out on in bargain bins...

Other than gaming, I love anime, manga, sports, movies, TV, and a whole lot more. I also happen to have something of a legendary love for Cammy, to the point that I am the site's unofficial official Cammy fanboy. And yes, I do play as her in Street Fighter and do so quite well, too.

Also, I am Chad Concelmo's B.F.F., my prize for coming in first in The Great Retro Quiz .18 - ActRaiser. Accept no substitutes. Not even Aerox.

Friend Codes or monthly fees: what would be better, Wii owners?
Brian Szabelski | 1:28 PM on 10.04.2009 16 comments

Just this morning, I was reading an interview on one of my Google Reader feeds with Chris Kramer, Capcom USA's Senior Director of Communications and Community. The subject was Monster Hunter 3's U.S. release and how the whole online set-up would, since Japanese users pay a monthly fee to use Capcom's dedicated servers. Except it might be different here in the West:

"It's something that we're looking into at the moment and there are a few factors to consider. Firstly, Monster Hunter isn't as popular in the West, so it might put people off. Secondly, Japan doesn't have Friend Codes, so Capcom run all the servers and the monthly fee is essentially to pay for those costs."

That second part - the part about Japan not having Friend Codes and eating a monthly fee instead - got me thinking: would you, the U.S. Wii owner (all six of you who post here :p) take paying a monthly fee for online play - a la Xbox Live, but perhaps cheaper - to play games like Mario Kart Wii instead of having to use the cumbersome Friend Code system?

To me, it seems like something of an exchange, not an upgrade. I'd rather have a free system with those pesky Friend Codes than have to shell out $5/month or something like that for playing with friends online. And heck, as it is right now, most Wii games don't even have online capabilities because a lot of developers don't want to implement them or make games that can't use them.

But I don't speak for everyone who owns a Wii. So, for those of you who haven't thrown your Wii in the trash yet, as all the cool kids are doing, which of the two options is more to your liking?

And please don't start with the whole "I want no friend codes and free online!!!" thing here. That's not part of the discussion, even though that's what I'd ultimately like, too.

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

Well, there no incentive to play online... Nintendo never went as far as Xbox live on the online competition market. C'mon who gets really into a race of Mario Kart... and os it worth even chatting about... No. The Wii internet services suck, because nobody cares about it, even wii owners... The hardcore Wii fanboys threw their console out of the window a long time ago...

I'll stick with the free service, I dont mind paying for Live. The Wii service so far just isnt' that good and I'm the only person I know that has one. But I'm still buying Monster Hunter.

I personally think Friend Codes are the dumbest idea to have ever come out of Nintendo's camp. It's the most unwieldly system of online communication I've ever come across, period.

I only want it to be as simple as Steam or PSN

Where's the best option for people who don't want to spend money? Sony's free online play.

The PSN lacks the functionality of Xbox Live, but it clearly trumps Nintendo, and is by no means a bad service.

I would definitely pay a monthly fee if there were more games with worthwhile online modes, and there was an easier way to voice chat, send messages, and everyone had their own gamertag.

Pretty much I want to have Xbox Live on my Wii. But I'm not sure if the Wii is powerfull enough for that.

I'd be happy with just a unified Friend Code across all games at the very least.

I don't understand.

So because they don't have Friend Codes, they have to pay monthly? I wouldn't think one would effect the other. So that sounds really strange.

I'd pay a small monthly fee for a "cross media bar" on the Wii, especially, if that means I dont have to pay a monthly for Monster Hunter

The Wii wasn't meant to be played online. It's a side-thought that didn't happen to pan out well. You buy a Wii to play with your friends in the same room on the same TV. Unless they did a major overhaul and every single multiplayer game on the console went online, I wouldn't be paying for it.

Huh.

Well, for me, the Wii's online services are perfectly fine, but then again, playing games online isn't a big priority for me. I let my XBL membership lapse months ago and I don't miss it.

Like Perdrovay is saying though, the choice for Nintendo is clear; keep friend codes going and keep the inline experience on the back burner. Why? Because Nintendo doesn't want to promulgate the belief amongst parents that hooking a videogame console to the family TV will lead to little Johnny using it to curse at strangers all day while playing "ultra violent first person shooters".

"Serious" online gaming was really made to happen on the PC and "bedroom consoles" like the 360, and not "living room" consoles like the Wii.

And so far, it's "living room" consoles that win console wars.

The Japanese pay to play MH3 online because Capcom has servers that consumers play on as opposed to straight-up P2P. EA did the same thing for Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 except without the monthly charge.

Personally, I am not an advocate of paying a monthly fee for one game, especially on a console that is so deficient in offering a complete online "experience."

And, really, it would take a massive upgrade of Nintendo's online service before I even consider paying for that as well.

I would be more tolerant of Friend Codes if it was just one for the system, not each individual game. I wouldn't pay for Wii's online unless they added features comparable to Xbox Live. I'd like to know when my friends are actually online so I could game with them without having to set things up beforehand.

charging for online services is what keeps me from buying an xbox, period. so, if monster hunter3 is run on a pay service, i won't buy it. i would prefer if nintendo only used one fc per system, not per game. i think just using the one wii code gets the job done, and that fc's for every title gets a bit redundant.

I like Sony's idea the best. Free...everything is free. PLUS they throw in a web browser! I know it's suppose to be a home console, not a computer, and I'm all for that idea. But being forced to pay monthly/add everyone you meet via friend code or having to download stupid applications for things like Facebook, Twitter, and the like is just retarded to me. Either have a web browser, making everything accessible, or just don't have any bullshit internet applications.
