About Me

Oh, hi there. Didn’t see you enter. Anyways, welcome to my humble little blog. For those of you not familiar with who I am, the name’s Brian. I’m 24 years old and hail from Findlay, Ohio. I work at the local newspaper here as a copy editor, putting my four long years of college to actual use. Kind of. I think.

For those of you who might recognize me from elsewhere, I work as Assistant Gaming Editor over at Blogcritics Gaming and as Features Editor over at Tomopop. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because I get to do a lot of cool shit with a lot of cool people.

I've been gaming since the relatively young age of around 3 and I've played plenty of games, both good and bad. I'm continuously expanding my gaming collection, which has become more of an archive in recent years as I'm focusing on collecting older, less well-known titles. You'd honestly be surprised on what people are missing out on in bargain bins...

Other than gaming, I love anime, manga, sports, movies, TV, and a whole lot more. I also happen to have something of a legendary love for Cammy, to the point that I am the site's unofficial official Cammy fanboy. And yes, I do play as her in Street Fighter and do so quite well, too.

Also, I am Chad Concelmo's B.F.F., my prize for coming in first in The Great Retro Quiz .18 - ActRaiser. Accept no substitutes. Not even Aerox.

EA: "Stop picking on our games, journalists." Journalists: "No."
Brian Szabelski | 11:25 PM on 06.18.2008 15 comments

As you may or may not have heard, EA's John Riccitiello bemoaned the fact that EA's scores are going down the tubes on sites like Metacritic and GameRankings. He blames it on the fact that anyone with a pen can rate a game now, which is a true fact... but it's not the reason the scores are still so low. Of course, after that, he goes on to state that they don't get "the benefit of the cult - 'everybody has to rate it a hundred' thing going on". Again, he has a point here that journalists can get wrapped up and just go with everyone else when it comes to rating games (see: GTA IV and MGS4 on every other site besides Destructoid), but once again, that's not why. In fact, I'm going to tell John why his scores are going down the tubes so quickly"

IT'S BECAUSE YOU KEEP PUMPING OUT THE SAME CRAP OVER AND OVER AGAIN WITH MINIMAL CHANGES.

For example, I reviewed NHL 08 on the PS2 and found out it was the same as NHL 04 on the PS2. Not the same in the sense that the controls were similar or game modes were similar... but that the graphics, textures, everything was identical except they threw in some minor league teams and changed up the rosters. Should I have expected it, maybe. Did it piss me off? You bet. The fact that nothing was changed just boggled my mind and only affirmed that they in fact do shovel the same game out there every year and don't give a rat's ass about it.

On top of the fact that EA's games stay virtually the same, their QA and debugging teams must suck balls because they end up shipping games with tons of bugs that sometimes make the games unplayable. Not every game is like this... but you know what? I have a right to tear EA a new one when I'm playing my UEFA 08 review copy on my 360 and the graphics suddenly go crazy and people turn invisible and I can't see shit. Tough luck, EA. Maybe if you wouldn't put out the same bullcrap everytime, and makes games worse each year, then I wouldn't have a reason to rip you a new one. You've proven you can make compelling and awesome games like Boom Blox and .skate before, games that don't have the issues with bugs. Why the hell can't you do the same for Madden? Why can't you do the same for Army of Two?

Apparently, the public doesn't seem to care, though. In a recent Game Informer survey (which I will get to tomorrow), EA was the third most trusted publisher, behind Ubisoft (WTF?!?!?!) and Capcom. I'll talk more about that survey tomorrow, but it is kind of startling and makes me wonder if the public doesn't realize what's going on. If not, someone ought to wake them up and tell them.

Oh hey EA is releasing a game called "Bad Company". Oh the irony.

Well, NHL 08 was pretty much universally acclaimed — but yeah, I’m sure the PS2 version was crappy. As for Madden 09, they sound like they’re really making a lot of improvements...but time will tell.

Yeah this wouldn't be a problem if they made good games. Problem solved?

There are some IRL gamer acquaintances at work, and the other day, one of them asked me who my favorite developers were. I said that I pretty much always pick up stuff made by Nintendo, Konami, and Capcom to at least try just because of their track record. He responds with Capcom, EA and Ubisoft... I shit you not.

I gave him a "WTF!?!" face, and then walked to the other side of the office.

I don't know man, my opinion on EA is slowly changing a bit nowadays, it actually seems like the company's making an effort now. Last I heard, Skate was pretty good, so was Rock Band, and Dead Space looks pretty sweet too.

And as I remember, "Track & Fields: The Need for Speed" was an awesome game back when I used to race with only the arrow keys.

If EA started treating game development more like a creative outlet and less like a money generating conveyor belt they might produce something worthy of critical acclaim.

Look at Mass Effect, could have been (much) better, got released half-baked.

I actually don't hate EA as much as I used to, or as much as the collective Internet still seems to. Let me explain.

Rock Band.
The Orange Box.
Boom Blox.
Smarty Pants.

Some of the best games I own are published by EA these days.

Please stop blaming QA teams, they could be the best on Earth and it wouldn't matter if the devs just want to say "Fuck it, as designed".

So long as it is established the game can be completed and conforms to the requirements set by the console manufacturers, the devs are often under no obligation to fix anything brought to their attention by QA. Probably also the fault of deadlines, which may not be down to dev teams.
