About Me

Oh, hi there. Didn’t see you enter. Anyways, welcome to my humble little blog. For those of you not familiar with who I am, the name’s Brian. I’m 24 years old and hail from Findlay, Ohio. I work at the local newspaper here as a copy editor, putting my four long years of college to actual use. Kind of. I think.

For those of you who might recognize me from elsewhere, I work as Assistant Gaming Editor over at Blogcritics Gaming and as Features Editor over at Tomopop. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because I get to do a lot of cool shit with a lot of cool people.

I've been gaming since the relatively young age of around 3 and I've played plenty of games, both good and bad. I'm continuously expanding my gaming collection, which has become more of an archive in recent years as I'm focusing on collecting older, less well-known titles. You'd honestly be surprised on what people are missing out on in bargain bins...

Other than gaming, I love anime, manga, sports, movies, TV, and a whole lot more. I also happen to have something of a legendary love for Cammy, to the point that I am the site's unofficial official Cammy fanboy. And yes, I do play as her in Street Fighter and do so quite well, too.

Also, I am Chad Concelmo's B.F.F., my prize for coming in first in The Great Retro Quiz .18 - ActRaiser. Accept no substitutes. Not even Aerox.

Daily Show, Colbert Report Finally Return Tonight. Will They Be Good?
Brian Szabelski | 10:23 AM on 01.07.2008 16 comments

Last week, the late night shows returned to TV with at least some moderate success. Conan was still funny, CBS made agreements with the Writer's Guild to get their shows staffed, and everyone continued to forget about poor Jimmy Kimmel. Get the guy on as the new Late Night host, already, NBC!

This week, it's time for two other shows to return: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report. Both shows have been off the air since the strike happened, and I have missed them dearly. I'm quite looking forward to their return.

But here's the bad news. The ongoing WGA strike means no guild writers for either show, and that includes both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. That's right, they're both members and unless the guild approves of then writing anything (highly unlikely), they will be unable to write any material for their own show without facing severe penalties. Jay Leno is being considered for such penalties for writing his own monologues upon his return because he, too, is a guild member.

So what will it mean for tonight? Who knows. The good news is that Stewart and Colbert (especially Colbert) are quick on their feet and can improvise when necessary, and I'm sure they've thought this through immensely before any return to the air, so I'm sure some strategy is in place. But will it be as funny? I really don't know, though I'm hopeful it will be. My roommate isn't watching because he doesn't want to be disappointed if it's not as good... how about you guys?

Improvissed humor can be hilarious. Hell look at "Who's line is it anyway". That show was (Supposed) to be completely improvised.

So Ya I'll be watching just to see how everything goes down. Even if they both crash and burn without a script, it'll still be hilarious.

Both are skilled improvers, I am not worried at all.

I'm sure they will be good.

Also, Cammie has a really hot ass. I'm sure I say that all the time but I thought I'd share again.

They'll still be good. Jon Stewart is hilarious, for sure, but I can't imagine he'd even do a show if the stuff he was doing wasn't funny, so the writers he's got should be decent.

is there a reason both conan and letterman have beards now? beards are epic and that IS reason enough. but it looks like a amster plan...

Spykron:

I'd assume it's because they finally had a chance to start growing them out. They are usually sent to "hair and makeup" every weekday, which probably prohibits epic beard growth.

Regarding improvising:

If Colbert or Stewart improvs a line or something, they then have created that line. How is it any different than writing? I mean, other than the obvious aspect that it wasn't written ahead of time. It still came from their own imaginations like anything they would have written would have. If they aren't allowed to *write* but are allowed to improvise, that's a pretty big loophole.

Who's writing this shit then? I might watch just to see if it's terrible.

Another thing to think about...if the shows rock and are still funny, will the writers even be asked to come back? I hope the writers know how much is at stake here.

The beards are in support of the writer's guild apparently. Not sure why Leno doesn't have one as he seemed to be one of the biggest supporters.

Conan's is fucking epic. Check out the video of him playing rock band, makes me lulz.

Huh, I didn't know that bit about Stewart and Colbert not being allowed to write anything. I thought that the whole time they were off the air they were trying to come up with some material on their own for a couple of episodes, but maybe it is all improv.

why go out on the air again if you don't have anything "written"? where do you draw the line.... but, i super pumped, 'cause its the only shows i care about on tv. it will be funny. it will be good. they will do something different and it will be awesome.

i actually think Leno's doing a better job than Conan, and not just because he's writing his own monologue.

Stewart and Colbert i'm pretty worried about. they rely HEAVILY on their writers, like Conan. we'll see what we see.
