Destructoid Radio Experiment
by Niero on 04.09.2008      187 comments

A long time ago the idea was proposed to start up a Destructoid Radio station online that would presumably play nothing but kick-ass commercial-free video game music 24/7 online. We're experimenting with a widget from Seeqpod to provide something like this today -- there's a little something in there for everyone, I think. Original game soundtracks, remixes, chiptunes, arrangements from all kinds of modern and retro games. We've also included material from notable game musicians like Dale North, The One Ups, and Dale North .... ok, ok, also The Minibosses, Video Games Live, Vertexguy, Koji Kondo, Hip Tanaka, DJ Pretzel, and a ton of others.

LAUNCH THE EXPERIMENT WIDGET THING NOW and let us know what you think in the comments below!

This is an awesome idea.

Dear Niero,

I know we're not like, good pals or even acquaintances. However, you bringing this radio station in at a time when I'm writing some big papers and need some nice instrumental music could come at NO BETTER TIME. Thanks.
The Wrath's Destructoid Blog
Didn't really like it. I love games, but Sonic remixes with Busta Rhymes feels...counterfeit. Of course it's my opinion, but I'd divert whatever resources on this towards something else.
Sarin's Destructoid Blog
awesome, love the zelda remix

I'm letting you know (in the comments) that I think this rules.

I can't hear a thing. I've allowed the pop-up, and I can see the destructoid logo, but there's not much else. :O(

The Wrath -- there's all kinds of weird shit in there. Let me know what you like and didn't like here in the comments and we'll do our best to DJ this thing properly and add fresh stuff on a regular basis

Have I ever told you how much I love Destructoid? <3

Seems to be working fine on the Firefox 3 Beta and on Opera :)
DaedHead8's Destructoid Blog
Niero

I think theres a pretty good list. Scanning through right now I see a lot of games and musical genres represented. Thats a good thing. I think variety is key here.
Nerd Bitch's Destructoid Blog
Me likey. =D
Steel Squirrel's Destructoid Blog
Nice. What's the likelihood of this becoming a regular thing?

Also, do you think us Dtoiders who make music will be able to get some songs of our own up there (with approval of course)?

Is it all going to be strictly video game remixes or just music that the staff deems awesome?

That's it.
Torzelan's Destructoid Blog
Nice, cool design too! Would like a "light" version somewhere too (main page or so?) as an alternative to needing a popup and adding to an already clogged taskbar.
Skribble's Destructoid Blog
Sonic remixed with Busta Rhymes...

It's like Michael Bay trying to direct Casablanca.
The Wrath's Destructoid Blog
Niero- I'm a HUGE fan of weird shit, but I guess I'm just not into game related music/remixes/etc. As you are aware, there are plenty of people who are.
Niero's Destructoid Blog
haha, fair enough -- let's take that one out asap
Torzelan's Destructoid Blog
Oh another thing, since the tracks are not hosted here (or so it seems?); maybe add a handy little download button? :) Right now for example there is a DO WANT track playing that, while already possible to get, could be a lot easier. Pretty please!
Niero's Destructoid Blog
Exactly. The stock player doesn't have it, but they have an API so we intend to build our own player that does a little more than what this one in the not-so-distant future
The Wrath's Destructoid Blog
Here's a freebie: What do you think about voice comments as well as text? Plain text can't covey tone and I always thought it would be stellar to comment on an article in my own voice. With compression tech constantly advancing, as well as delivery methods increasing, having a 15 sec 300kb stream would be difficult to push, nor would it cripple a web server. Bah...I'm rambling...
Pedro Blandino's Destructoid Blog
:O you don't have Parasite eve's out of phase song on the radio D:
Skribble's Destructoid Blog
I should say I like the idea a lot, it just needs some tweaking. Maybe some kind of sorting function; Id prefer not to listen to cheap techno and DnB "remixes" of good songs.

sounds pretty damn awesome so far Niero.

maybe try getting some of those street fighter songs by that rapper named "turbo" on here?

check it outt
http://youtube.com/watch?v=EjLrxRz1sVI

i heart this song with all my heart

i also heart you with all my heart, plus any other hearts i can get my hands on
Skribble's Destructoid Blog
Heres a nitpick, the volume should update as you slide the bar, not after you've unclicked your mouse. Oh, and definitely a "favorites" button.

Maybe just a button to click on each song that will keep them at the top of the whole list.
RAB's Destructoid Blog
hmm..and some songs seem to give me an error message saying "error loading track from source"

im using internet explorer and uhh.. kaspersky anti-virus?

another sick idea to implement may be to allow downloading of the songs?
RAB's Destructoid Blog
drawing from skribbles idea, maybe allow dragging and dropping of songs to change the order around
RAB's Destructoid Blog
also maybe.. maybe seperate files within the player, corresponding the the videogame/genre

like a file for all the mario songs, all the ff songs, etc

i cant get over how badass you are for making such a badass site

“STAR LIGHT ZONE” FOR THE MOTHERFUCKIN’ WIN!

This rocks so hard, Niero...literally.
filarion's Destructoid Blog
It's a great idea, but I figure it'd really kickass to eventually expand the format and maybe allow community members to post (Creative Commons licensed) shows themselves.. submission based maybe, I realize that staff has to go over the material before it airs. friends of mine run the systrum.net netradio that mostly plays netlabel music - granted, it's not gaming music, but the styles sometimes do overlap.
insomnia's Destructoid Blog
(Disclaimer: I can't try this now so I don't know if this is the case)

Some other nice ideas would be to let people request/vote on the next track which will be played and a shoutcast compatible stream for people who prefer to use their own music player, you can use multiple quality settings for the shoutcast servers off course and there is quite a decent open source shoutcast compatible server called icecast.

I can’t believe you actually included the Pogo the Monkey commercial from GTA III.

“Help Pogo escape from the evil research laboratory, where the mean old scientist genetically altered him. Uh-oh! The pharmaceutical scientist is going to get you, Pogo!”
***
“Good thing Pogo has a banana cannon. Those nasty scientists deserve to die. Now get the shampoo manufacturers before they squirt it in your eye!”

Fucking win.

@Toneman: You’re missing it. I’m looking at, like, 8 MGS tracks in the list right now.
Vigor's Destructoid Blog
This is honestly such a awesome idea.
Toneman's Destructoid Blog
Even Rick Astley. Niero is a GOD.
Fronz's Destructoid Blog
Jesus, there's a ton of tracks! I can't tell just by scrolling, but if you don't have a lot of OC Remix stuff, then definitely add some. FF7's Rape of a Planet remix, and Super Metroid's One Girl in all the World remix are the first two that come to mind :)

Also -- I agree with what Filarion said.
Fronz's Destructoid Blog
Hahaha, Rick Astley, just saw that too.

If there's any way to make this player channel based, that would be helpful to avoid super scrolling. Like a Zelda channel, a Katamari channel, a Reader Podcast channel, etc. And one last suggestion: can you add a number of listens number? Would be a cool way to find new stuff by checking out what others are listening to the most. I'll probably end up listening to them all in one night anyways tho...
Justice's Destructoid Blog
This thing is EPIC Niero.
stoo1985's Destructoid Blog
ahh i thought it was going to be streaming live, still cool though.
Toneman's Destructoid Blog
All in all I'd say it's awesome. Aside from a few organization tweaks it seems fine to me. I like Fronz's idea of channels to keep things clean. Also, a search field might be nice to zip straight to a certain song.
Torzelan's Destructoid Blog
Toneman: Hey, where'd you get your DDR tracks? I've got like a couple of videogame tracks but not really a lot, and since I'll be getting one of those dance mat things any day now I'd like to expand :)
Toneman's Destructoid Blog
@Torzelan: bemanistyle.com
I go there to get all of my songs for StepMania. Just search for a song you want and download the SM file. The mp3s of each song are inlcuded in eahc file.
Torzelan's Destructoid Blog
Nice, thanks man. Will check it out!
Fronz's Destructoid Blog
@Torzelan: There's a PC game called StepMania -- it's DDR played with the arrow keys on your computer. It's a lot of fun, and you also get the sound files of all the DDR songs, you just have to go find your favorites in the system file folders and copy/paste them into your playlists.

PS: Memories of when StepMania made my monitor catch on fire -- http://www.destructoid.com/reader-s-review-stepmania-tetris-on-crack-27671.phtml

That was technically my first post ever :) Almost exactly 2 years ago. I <3 Dtoid.

I demand more Castlevania tunes! In particular, try looking for the double-CD soundtrack to Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles for PSP, which has both the original arrangements from Rondo of Blood (themselves arrangements of some of the best Castlevania songs) and a newer, more orchestral arrangement.

Also, Song of Storms from Ocarina of Time!

->Niero: Get the kode on there, they're the best gaming cover band of any genre I've ever heard. I can't try out the player here at work(don't think my workmates fully appreciate how utterly awesome casino nights zone's music is), but I'll definitely do so at a later stage.

It might have been my computer but 99% of the songs wouldn't play. I'll try again later withe internet explorer I was using mozilla at first.
Also just scanning the play list, any Jet Grind Radio/Jet Set Radio Future?
Tamz's Destructoid Blog
This is really cool, however you guys need to throw in something different in there that would keep people listening as opposed to throwing the tracks on from their hard drive. A DJ would be pretty sweet.

Waiting for it to load now... No doubt it'll be awesome. :)

Any chance of offering it as a downloadable PLS file (or something similar)? Not sure about other people but I'd much rather listen to internet radio through winamp or media player than my browser. Sure it'd just be a stream that, like a real radio station, you couldn't pause or select tracks on, but personally I like that sort of thing. ^_^

i was skimming comments didn't see this.

There should be a way to vote on songs, and then each week you can make a top 10,20,etc. list people can listen to.

and songs that get votes of 90%+ fail you can get rid of. :cough busta cough:

i know this probably isn't do-able until you make your own, but it's a great idea, and should definitely be brought through.

HarassmentPanda's Destructoid Blog
I definitely think the biggest improvement to the interface would be a way to organize the music. Even at this early stage it's nearly impossible to browse all of the tunes. As for music suggestions (and I'm sorry if some of these are already on there, it's hard to search that list):

Friend-of-Destructoid CheapyD has some decent songs, but one that should definitely be on here is his Tetris remix Ass & Tetris (You Forgot Poland).

I also think that some of the songs from Starmen.net's Rock Candy series should be on here. Rock Candy is 100% fan-made music inspired by the Earthbound/Mother series of games. The songs are of varying quality, but most are surprisingly good. One that has always stuck with me is the rap song "UrfBownd," which is the final track on the first Rock Candy Album. Further, Starmen.net has a pretty complete collection of other fan music and chip tunes, but the real gems are mostly in the Rock Candy albums.

Otherwise, I KILL PXLS is a must. I've also been enjoying The Depreciation Guild's free album In Her Gentle Jaws, which is very video game-inspired and surprisingly good for the genre.
MaxVest's Destructoid Blog
Very nice! I agree with suggestions to help organization, like creating different channels. I'd love to see a dtoid podcast channel so I can catch up, a remix channel, an original soundtrack channel, an original game-related music channel -- maybe 5-10 genre breakdowns and then an All Music channel.

Also, I don't know what the API allows, but the ability to add favorites and generate playlists would be nice.

Keep up the good work!
pheonix-blood's Destructoid Blog
nothing is working 0_o all i get is 'error loading from source'. wtf?!
MaxVest's Destructoid Blog
*edit - All the genre classification is contingent on being able to do it automatically. If you can't do it without someone listening to every song and tagging it, it's not worth it.

Niero, I'm in Firefox 3 Beta 5 on Mac OS X 10.5.2 and I'm having trouble with some of the tracks loading. In particular, The Minibosses' FF6 and nearly all of Dale's stuff.

Requests:

Could we get some Mark DeNardo on the list? If I could pick just one, it'd be poulenc.

Nitpicks:

It looks generic when you imbed it to Myspace, but it sounds like you're making your own, so I'm sure that will be addressed. As it stands, when you imbed it, it doessn't say Destructoid anywhere on it.

I get a flash error when I click on some songs to play them, but if I use the skip buttons it wokrs fine.
