Confession: I did not expect to like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. I was wrong
Niero | 9:27 PM on 11.19.2007 44 comments

While I have a lot of respect for Naughty Dog, I honestly didn't expect to like this game at all. I'd seen it at a few press events and played it for a few minutes here and there to get a feel for the play control mechanics, but I never really paid too much attention to it and had all but written it off as a Tomb Raider clone with a dude as a protagonist. I typically don't pick up 3rd person shooter adventures and thought I wasn't going to get into it anyway. I also hate games with names that have semicolons, asterisks, and punctuation marks -- a pet peeve of mine. Fester's Quest? Fuck you. Avatar: The Last Airbender? Cuntish.

But holy fuck, was I was way wrong. I need to come clean on this.

Luckily Colette had picked up the demo and we took a stab at it last night -- my expectations were so low that I was all but completely blown away by how much fun it was. I played the demo through all the way in Normal and was really impressed by the enemy AI (they don't run into the open much, if you connect a shot they immediately hide elsewhere) and the play control is spot on: easy to take cover and react as well as switch shoulders on the gun. I also was expecting the lead to be more on the goofy side but they pulled off believable characters that are fun to watch like an old Harrison Ford movie that didn't suck. I haven't purchased many PS3 games because I'm so picky about next-gen games, but this is one I actually can't wait to finish post Thanksgiving glut.

I really don't want to jump on the whole Ass Creed hate bandwagon, but I found myself way more entertained by this one than Ubi's game. I would have never guessed that in a million years.

Ass Creed? Ass Effect? What is this asinine nonsense?

Yup! Either Nick or Colette will be doing a full review. We didn't get a preview copy so we're picking one up tomorrow.

No it's okay, you can admit AC's failure. And I want to play this game so hard.

Glad to hear you like it, brother. I actually left the office a bit early today to pick it up and I can honestly say that the finished game is much better. I won't spoil anything for you, but you'll enjoy it very much.

This game is like...
Pitfall, Icco, Tomb Raider, & Gears O War.
( IMO )

This game is much better than Assassin's Creed
( Gameplay Wise )

I'm having the best time I've ever had on my PS3!

Awesome, I've been touting this one for a while and have been impressed with everything about it. I am not one to buy third-person shooting games really, but it's Naughty Dog. I expect good things.

I could give a shit about it now, but if I had a PS3, it would be one of the few games I'd own.

I was surprised to when I first played it at Comic Con. I can't wait to play it.

Niero I was in your same position. I freakin love Naughty Dog, but I did not care much at all for this title. I figured it was just about some guy running around a jungle shooting things. Then I played the demo, and I was blown away. I bought the game yesterday, and I beat it today, (VERY short) but it was well worth $60.

Yea, I would say that Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted: Drakes Fortune are two of the best games to come out this holiday season. The only game that tops them is CoD4, which is mind-blowing.

Agreed... playing this game reminded me of when i played Tomb Raider on PSONE and how it felt like the first awesome platformer for the system.

@ Niero:

Awww...No D-toid love coming from Naughty Dog?

Anyway, I bet the review will be worth the wait. Unless Rev Ant gets his hands on a copy. Just Kidding!

Will you guys be playing with DualShock3's or Sixaxis controllers?

460 dollars plus tax good? Because if you say so then I'll get a PS3.

@Cowzilla

If you can afford to waste that kind of money, then go and get one. But if it's a serious investment, wait for another price drop in a year or so. You're not missing much, that much I can tell you. There is some decent DLC games and shit, but that's about it. Ratchet and Clank is a good game, but not worth spending 400 for. Maybe this game will be worth it.

Okay, so you can't talk and I don't know how to use punctuation. Duly noted.

Nice...I’m glad to see some PS3 love on DTOID. I, too, was blown away by the demo (I had no idea the lush jungle environments looked that good). But it’s not just the graphics — the gameplay is great (has that “switching shoulders” mechanic been implemented before? because it’s pure genius), and the protagonist is eminently quotable. I was on the fence about Uncharted, but the demo convinced me to buy the game. Chalk up an EPIC WIN for Naughty Dog, as well as [another] one for Sony’s first-party titles!

Naughty Dog does no wrong. Also, I kinda liked the commercial I saw for this one. Hooray for Sony not sucking!

What do you mean by switching shoulders? Is the character ambidextrous and able to fire a rifle braced against either shoulder?

I have to say I'm intrigued by the whole thing. But especially the shoulders. Such broad, masculines shoulders...

Ditto, boss. I sucked off the demo so hard that it had to have hurt it, and I can't wait to own this title.

Drake is honestly funny, they did a good job at making him react how a real person would if they were getting shot at or a grenade was thrown at them.

Also, they had the coolest promotion at PAX for this, even if it was Campy as hell.

I played through the demo, too, and I have to agree with you. Some of the motion-control stuff felt a little gimmicky and uncalled for, but I was really very surprised by how good the game was and how much fun I had playing it.

I'm loving all this immersive, "no HUD" stuff that's coming out lately. :D

As of last night I have my 120 stars. Now to play this or Mass Effect.

I heard there were alot of conflicts for reviewers on this game, just like Ubi's Ass Creed. I guess we'll see, but I'm glad to hear something on the PS3 is a good game.

@ mechamonkey: you can switch camera view from one shoulder/side to the other with just a click of the L3 button. for those times when you are shooting while in cover and you need to move to the other side or want a better choice at a view angle.

i played the demo and was quite impressed. i think it takes a little too much to kill someone, but maybe this game is actually more correct. my only complaint was the jungle looks very clean. but then again, i don't want this game to get bundled with the 'brown' crowd.

Man, I picked the right time to break down and buy a PS3. Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank, Eye of Judgment, and now this?

Sony, you're on the road to redemption. Now just try not to screw it up.
