About Me
As a media & technology analyst I've tried to look at games as more than just entertainment devices. To get to the root, one could say, of how video games and the modern media surrounding them effects who we are, how we feel, and our future.

Sadly, that is a waste of time. But come on! We've got nothing better to do on this rotating ball of dirt.

I'm Nick. I'm not shy about what I think. And I'd like to spill it here. I'll try to give you some interesting guts and insight into the industry, and surrounding media. No promises tho, sometimes the pond is too shallow.

I've been gaming sense I was knee-high to a magazine rack reaching for EGM. I grew up games. Where the generation before me might have honored brands like MTV and bands like Flock of Seagulls I worship Gods named Xbox, Playstation, and We Might Be Giants. It's left me... a little fucked up to be honest. But it is who I am, and who we are.

So. Pull up a chair. Check your batteries. Oh. And pass the caffeine supplement drink of choice.

Feedback : Did Nintendo end the console war?
Nicholie | 9:12 AM on 05.07.2008 23 comments

The Nintendo Revolution. Not the Revolution we expected?
The Xbox is finally profitable, and even the PS3 has come around to the light of a gamers eyes after months of scorn.

Where's Nintendo in this equation? Making a shit load of money as a side industry. Any longtime gamer will tell you, the Wii doesn't fit the mold of what a new console should be. Its underpowered, gimmicky, and has a lame ass name. It should have been a flop off the starting line.

However, it is isn't. Its actually thriving! People love playing them almost as much as they love buying them. However, these "people" aren't the normal crowd. There younger gamers, old school loving junkies (Who can hate on Mario?), and people looking for something new.

Atop of that, Microsoft and Sony seem to not care. Sure they'd love to get a slice of that pie and make more money, but there current consoles seem to be doing just fine.

So what do you think? Did Nintendo end the console war and change the face of gaming by literally creating them self a "niche" market?

Does this open the door for another company to possible enter in and compete with Nintendo?

I think Nintendo knew that they had to move over to the casual market, becuase they couldn't stand up against MS & Sony.

Are you kidding? Sony tried to steal the motion control idea long ago. Our Editors on the front page have put up some possible controller designs for the 360's model.

Also there is no "normal" crowd. Whoever wants to play games will play them, whoever wants to play the Wii, 360, or PS3 will play it. Anything anyone plays is a matter of their own taste in games.

To say that MS or Sony don't care is just misinformered. There is lots of talk of MS having Rare be in charge of their "Casual Games" department and having them in charge of the creation of the motion-controller on the 360.

And the SIXAXIS, 'nuff said!

What Nintendo did for them was probably the best move for them, even if it wasn't the best move for a lot of us. So, even though I find myself liking their products less and less, I can't really hold it against them from a business standpoint.

If you'd read beyond the first part, I clearly said they'd love to get a slice of that pie.

But its hardly there focus.

SCEE spent a large chunk of their gamer's show yesterday showing off their new casual games actaully. I'd say Sony at least is trying to steer focus much closer to the casual gamers. They renamed it "social gaming" though becasue you know they aren't trying to capture what Nintendo did at all...nope not them.

Also I'm the normal crowd and I play my Wii as often as my 360. I'm trying to get through Okami right now in fact. To answer your question though I think Sony and Microsoft stayed in the niche market and are trying to crawl out of it while Nintendo created a new market all together.

I must admit, Nintendo had their heads screwed on this time. They said they weren't going to try to compete with MS or Xony and they didn't. They opened up their own market and cleaned up. Sony and MS will grab a slice of the pie, sure, but just like the handheld market, Nintendo knew where they could make best use of their talents and resources. Well done them!

They're not winning the console war, they're not even fighting. They've given up and decided to seek enlightenment, peace and love instead, letting the big guns blast away at each other.

Our problem, as gamers, is that we like war too damned much. Myself included!

I think its a lot of what Jack said.

I remember an interview somewhere where Miyamoto or someone else said that having three consoles that all try to boast good graphics and technology is just overkill for the market. The market can only really support 2 at the most. (I think it is like Pepsi and Coca-Cola. The market wouldn't support a third giant. There's RC Cola but it has its own niche market)

I think after the 64 and the Gamecube, the big N realized that if they go with a powerful system they would lose since they already lost the so-called "hardcore" base to Sony and MS.

What Cowzilla said... Nintendo played it smart this time around by appealing to everyone who wasn't a gamer... And there's a lot more of them then their are of us. If only the system could have matched the other two in performance and online capabilit, then even the hardcore would be happy. They went for the larger market at the expense of alienating the core players who care about cutting edge tech.

This is a hardcore gamer site. You're not allowed to talk about how the Wii is winning. Nintendo is "betraying real gamers" and not intelligently expanding their market base and providing more options to gamers. :)

Nintendo did'nt end the console war, they merely changed the rules of combat.

Nintendo learnt that more power doesn't always equal more profit (the N64 Vs the ps1) So decided to innovate with other aspects of their consoles instead. I don't think even they would of expected the sensation that the Wii, and its controllers have cuased though.

Any longtime gamer will tell you, the Wii doesn't fit the mold of what a new console should be.

I've been a gamer for more than 20 years, and I'm most certainly not saying that. Anyone who does say that is frankly an elitist cunt who really shouldn't call themselves a "gamer". As long as it provides an enjoyable experience, who really cares?

Sure, my Wii goes through long bouts of collecting dust like many others', but so does my Dreamcast, SNES, NES, and DS. If it wasn't for XBLA my 360 probably would as well. Heck, if it wasn't for the internet even my PC would.

The Wii's runaway success has definitely caught the attention of the competitors. I can't see why it wouldn't. A console that amazingly isn't selling at a loss is moving an enormous amount of units, making Nintendo and others a lot of money. Only people who are allergic to money wouldn't want a piece of that pie.

The Wii does it own thing, and fits very nicely into the console landscape. To get anecdotal for a minute:

I've been playing GTAIV on my shiny new Xbox360 nearly non-stop, and plenty other top notch games since I got the box about three weeks ago. And I've loved it.

However, in those three weeks, I've gone back to my Wii to play River City Ransom, finally got my hands on Zack and Wiki (and its a righteous score, new or used) and just today, the shiny blue light called me back to put batteries back in my WiiMote and check out the new Nintendo Channel. Its not as spider-like and all consuming connective like the 360, but I had a personal joygasm getting into a shiny new feature for my Wii. I get to check out Ninja Gaiden DS demo without going to a GameStop! How cool is that?
