About Me
As a media & technology analyst I've tried to look at games as more than just entertainment devices. To get to the root, one could say, of how video games and the modern media surrounding them effects who we are, how we feel, and our future.

Sadly, that is a waste of time. But come on! We've got nothing better to do on this rotating ball of dirt.

I'm Nick. I'm not shy about what I think. And I'd like to spill it here. I'll try to give you some interesting guts and insight into the industry, and surrounding media. No promises tho, sometimes the pond is too shallow.

I've been gaming sense I was knee-high to a magazine rack reaching for EGM. I grew up games. Where the generation before me might have honored brands like MTV and bands like Flock of Seagulls I worship Gods named Xbox, Playstation, and We Might Be Giants. It's left me... a little fucked up to be honest. But it is who I am, and who we are.

So. Pull up a chair. Check your batteries. Oh. And pass the caffeine supplement drink of choice.

Feedback : Bucking the sequel trend?

Personal opinion, there are way too many damn Tomb Raiders. Thats despite how much I love jiggly cgi titties.

Tomb Raider, Tony Hawk, John Madden, Quake, Call of Duty, Gran Turismo...

That list could go on for miles. Games, much like movies, have been driven by a steady stream of sequels for years. It seems if you hit gold just once with a game, its a right to milk the shit out of it till all ends.

However, there's a limit to such. At some point the formula becomes stale, the rhetoric gets refreshed, and that name brand gets yawned at. Like John Madden Football. How much innovation can you really make other than a roster update?

And I don't think sports games get the past. Even shooter franchises like Unreal Tournament I think overstay there welcome with decades of rehash graphics and somewhat new maps.

But, the flip side to this is how much joy we get when something new truly comes out. Take Bioshock. While with a spiritual tie to SystemShock, its clear that the fresh take, atmosphere and styling of the game came as a wonderful treat for gamers. Now, while there's still plenty of room to advance that story, do we want it to never end? Bioshock 5 anybody? Or would we prefer maybe a renovation at some point in a develop meant cycle? That of course, is an example best suited for a long overdue franchise and not something as new as Bioshock.

What do you think? Sequels need to be cut down on? Or are we happy with Halo 7 : The Return of the Covenant.

I don't think you can lump all sequels together into one GOOD/BAD judgement. Some sequels are unnecessary cash-ins that drag the series down, and others are fantastic. Call of Duty 4 is the best FPS I've ever played, so uhh...

In this age where next-gen games cost a buttload of capital, this trend is likely to become worse. Unfortunately, this is the way the industry has been going for a while. A new IP in this age is a really risky business move. Bioshock paid off by being a worthy experience, but it's not a game I thought I would want to see endless sequels based upon. If new IP fails, it could potentially shut down the developers even if the game was good but lacked sales. It saddens me that money is such a driving force compared back to the 80's/90's, but that's the way everything work as gaming continues to become further integrated into mainstream society. I guess I'm just another one of those people who miss the variety and creativity from the golden age of gaming.

I like your point, as obvious it may have been, but on the other hand, the last couple Tomb Raider titles (one of them a remake even) were pretty damn good, and I wouldn't mind seeing high definition jungle crawling in 1080p (you know, without having to buy a whole other system...)
