9-11 and Shadow of the Colossus
NeilC | 3:03 AM on 02.04.2008 8 comments

I recently saw the film “Reign over me” in which Adam Sandler plays a character called Charlie Fineman who is sufferering from deep post-traumatic stress after losing his wife and daughters in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Charlie pretty much tries to shut his memories and the world out by playing his I-pod loud, going to all night movie marathons and playing Shadow of the Colossus.
Does the scriptwriter’s choice of Shadow of the Colossus as Charlie’s favourite game reveal something about Charlie’s character? It has been suggested that the repeated knocking down of the colossi recalls the collapse of the twin towers and this somehow relieves the stress of the protagonist. Maybe something has escaped me but I would have thought the opposite would be true, considering that Charlie could hardly be happy about twin towers’ destruction.
Can anybody explain the particular significance, if any, of Shadow of the Colossus in this film?

I haven't seen that movie. Maybe its just because Shadow of the Colossus is a title to refer to. The wreck site at 9/11 is a shadow of the previous colossus of the 2 towers.

They did this on purpose. SotC was picked becuase it represented how your life can be flipped around by something bigger than you, or something. Go to SotC's wiki article, it sys there.

The reason he continually played that is, as liam said, to represent that something much bigger than you can change your life. It was also representative of Charlie constantly trying to get over the incidenet but as he continually plays it, it is forever in his thoughts. This film was one of sandlers best.

Yes, a lot of Adam Sandler movies are the same, but at least they're not as bad as Chris Rock movies. Chris Rock's movie are literally almost all the same and he uses the same jokes for each movie and they're also the same jokes you hear in his stand up acts.

Anyway, obviously some of you haven't seen the movie "Reign Over Me" because this is one movie that Sandler plays in that is nothing like the rest of his movies. It's actually a really good film, and Sandler doesn't act the same as he usually does either.
