Let me preface this by getting the non-videogame stuff out of the way and explaining what spawned this before I get into what this actually is.
I've worked in the movie theatre business for sometime now and have also been a bit of a media whore when it comes to music (the 80s rocks my face forever). Having seen more movies than anyone in their right mind should ever have to see in their life, I've often wondered how a movie (or an album) that one considers to be a classic stands to the test of time when you give it a watch (or listen) a good ways down the line.
Oftentimes I found that movies that meant a lot to me when I was growing up or I thought were awesome just because I was young or in an impressionable point in my life didn't hold up after several years, despite how I could watch them effortlessly over and over back in the day. Music stayed the same for me mostly because my tastes didn't waver very much in the last fifteen years or so.
So here I am on a site I enjoy, lacking in content to write because there's not much I feel like voicing an opinion on and because the only "next-gen" system I own is a Wii, to which I've played a whopping two games I care about, one of which I thought was utter shite. I don't like handhelds for the most part (the DS is neat, but it REALLY hurts my eyes). So no new reviews to give beyond my 40-hour SSBB impressions I already posted. And thusly came the idea that I played far too many games in the last 25 years of my life. There's gotta be a bunch of people out there who can relate to having played some "classics" in their day that seemed so amazing and wonder whether they stand as well as they used to.
Worry no more, worriers. I shall be your guide to playing through all the classics of yore and giving a hands-on impression concerning these games.
Since graphical content is fairly irrelevant when it comes to classics, I'll let the images do the talking for the reviews. I will be placing emphasis on gameplay as standard fare, but also the little things that lured you in and kept you there in the first place (does anyone not have a place in their heart for the theme music for Level 1 of Contra?). I also intend to take a cue from Koobert who made mention of how older games sometimes are harder or easier for people to play nowadays and go over whether the passage of time has affected the overall difficulty of said games (RPGs notwithstanding of course...anyone can grind).
I will gladly take requests from anyone, as long as it falls into the category of 1) being a game I have played, and 2) being a game I enjoyed. If I've never played it, I obviously can't review it and give an impression of my thoughts of yesteryear on it...and if I didn't like it, you probably aren't going to like how I feel about the game NOW.
Hopefully I'll have the first review up in a couple days. I've been hovering between a couple games that definitely hold some high respect in my mind.
Until then, game on!
