Is Splinter Cell worth comparing to MGS
Neelesh | 9:42 AM on 06.23.2007 3 comments

The Master of stealth Solid Snake has been facing Stiff Resistance these days, with Kojima breaking the 360 into two by referring to it as a DVD player and Metal Gear Solid 4 requiring a home theater to experience the goodness of war. Well Snake it seems ain’t coming an inch close to those M$, (but what he said was also quite true, the PS3 does come close to a home theater sans the Bravia and Bose surround sound system), although the rumors about an alliance between Suda (of Killer 7 fame) and Kojima and the revival of a 16 bit mystery/adventure game called “Snatcher” (Sega CD) does have a multiplatform prospect, that is if it isn’t exclusive for the Wii.

Well Microsoft, went shopping and bought its own stealth super spy in the form of Sam fisher of Splinter Cell fame, his next sneak op “ConViction” is scheduled to appear exclusively on the 360, it is currently being handled by the Montreal studio who brought out the original Splinter cell and its stellar sequel Chaos Theory, (Double agent and Pandora tomorrow were developed by their Shanghai studio, they were more of expansion packs than full fledged games) ,the game is about to take a complete turn around with Sam being put in an sandbox area and finding ways to escape the enemy ,ironic but it defines Mgs4’s tagline “No where to hide”.

I just came impressed by the hand to hand combat and the use of the environment as a weapon from the recent trailer; call it strange but the Information that was divulged about the game, made me feel the ideas were akin to I-O Interactive’s “Hitman” Series.

ConViction would have been able to stand out of the crowd if it did not resemble the upcoming and highly anticipated “Assassin’s creed” being developed by the same studio and Fisher’s uncanny resemblance of Big Boss from Snake eater who in turn looks like Kurt Russell from his Escape from New York and L.A adventures., this also reminds me of a game that was scheduled to be built around the adventures of “Snake Plissken” by Namco, the game seems to be MIA, If Namco ever decides to revive the game I hope its not like Dead to rights , Kill.Switch Or Nina :Codebreaker

I got hold of the Stats for both the games and Metal Gear seems to beat splinter Cell by Miles in terms of sales figures here’s the break up Metal Gear Solid (6.6 million) ,Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty(7 million )Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (3.7 million) whereas Splinter Cell series could only manage to Churn out 5 million copies (all three of its games combined, I don’t know the sales figures for the current one[Double agent] and It can’t really be another 5 million), the game did have an upper hand in the multiplayer front which was far better than the online mode Introduced in MGS3:Subsistence.

The gameplay mechanics of Splinter cell has always had an authentic spy feel to it, the story revolves around global crisis situations (which are hardly comprehendible), the slick gadgets coupled with the use of Stealth maneuvers requires players to trod along a level with a lot of patience, if it was not for the shoddy A.I. in all the four games, the series would have been really hard to beat.

The Metal gear solid series is like an over the top Hollywood blockbuster action/spy movie that delivers on all fronts, but merely calling it a Hollywood movie would be an insult for it is one of the most impressive games I‘ve ever seen till date, the story does have minor loopholes, but the gameplay fits in tune with the surroundings (guns + explosions+ polished gadgets + environment=One man army), the story illustrates a wide range of emotions, and the Characters are superbly crafted to fit into the story(SNAKE!!!!!), however the game is more forgiving in the stealth department than Splinter cell and the cutscenes that tell a major chunk of the story feel somewhat stretched at places, detracting from the on hands experience. I wonder if Kojima will have Minigames this time around within cutscenes, to keep the player drenched in the saga of war, honor and love.

This whole raging debate started out with the original Splinter cell when certain gaming websites labeled it as a “Metal gear clone”. This little snippet has been taken directly from the review of the original Splinter Cell game.

“Splinter Cell is a third-person stealth-based game, much like the Metal Gear Solid series. What's important to note about Splinter Cell is that it's not a game trying to be like Metal Gear Solid 2, it's a game that has evolved past it.”

I think its time to get the facts straight, Splinter cell has more common elements in the Thief series, sneaking and active measures of stealth are essential in completing the missions, whereas MGS allows players to use confrontation as an effective solution to progress ahead in the story ,which is not centered around a rigid structure of missions ,so both games fall in different gaming genres all together, the only common line that runs parallel through both the games is the fact that the protagonists are Stealth agents (the actions of such agents will be similar in a lot of terms, so it is advised not to start comparing the various moves/weapons presented in both the games), barring this I cannot seem to find too much in common in both the games, the games deal entirely with different subjects all together.

The only reason I think its essential for Montreal’s game to be compared with Kojima’s master piece is the fact it gives them an incentive to create a stealth game that gives all games a run for their money in a big way.

A list of Retro games that you need to dig into. (Vote in)
Neelesh | 11:09 AM on 06.22.2007 3 comments

This list that I’ve manage to compile constitutes a number of games that should have seen sequels, but never saw a developer or a publisher pick it up.

I don’t know how many shall actually remember these games because they are quite a step away from the conventional retro lists that everyone keeps looking into .Note- the list is not in any particular order of preference-

1. Heavy Metal F.A.K.K 2(Ritual)-Lara...Phew...
2. Abuse (Crack Dot com)-A true homage to ALIENS..I think no one would ever heard of this game...download it and give it a shot...
3 .Marvel VS Capcom Series (Capcom) Either a complete sequel or a release on XBLA/PSN/VC
4. MDK –“Shwang Shing” and “Puppy Wuppy Dingy Doggy” {Bioware/Shiny}
5. Fear Effect (Eidos)...A tale of Crime set in Hong Kong
6. Blood (Monolith)-I loved the first game, the second was fun as well, watch out for the “Eating Hearts bit” return In Starbreeze studios “The Darkness”
7. Blades of Steel (Platform-NES)
8. Deathrow (Southend studios/Ubisoft)-everyone overlooked this game; the applause meter saw Sneaky fisher win the contest.
9. Nightmare Creatures...Adam Crowely... (Ubisoft), the third game was slated to appear on the previous generation...but disappeared....this game would definitely Manhunt a run for its money
10. Sanitarium-Lord save me!
11. Oni-Oh Konoko, the wicked wicked Master Chief is never going to let live ever again.

Its time for you guys to vote for the game on the list that deserves a shot...

Is the Halo series worth the hype?
Neelesh | 1:53 PM on 06.21.2007 9 comments

Facts always sound stranger than fiction, whenever I do a bit of work on my site its interesting to Notice most of my regular readers (Knuckleheads of the first order) love to blast ,me with a bunch Of stats, my question remains how far do these figures do in actually establishing the greatness of the game.

Halo is a perfect example of a millions of users falling in for a hype-machine created by Microsoft, I do admit the game was good in certain ways but majority of the game lacked substance that would actually keep me engrossed to my Screen.

The vehicles were cool, the dual weapons were kinda okay,(They been done loads of time, Blood 2 was the First FPS to do that) ,the Covenants are too colorful to be bad and mean, they look right out of an episode form Tele tubbies, there is no solid plot holding the game, If anyone picks up and plays through the game, they’ll have no clue of what happened or how it happened, unless you look stuff up on M$ paid fan sites to get a grasp of what actually is going on.

The best bit about the game is and has to be Master Chief, Bungie has managed to get the lead character dot on, he ranks close to Snake or Freeman as a game character, but the rest of game is a monotonous winding road that keeps raking up a dry well with its sequels.

People will go and pick up a billion copies of Halo, but only one copy of Okami gets shelved in the meantime. People crib about American not making quality games, when developers do make quality games the crowd just fails to notice its efforts.

I’ve never come across a single site that keeps ranting about Psi-ops and the possibilities of its sequel, post release of Stranglehold or what about Psychonauts, even a game like “second sight” had a much deeper storyline than Halo, People call themselves hardcore gamers by playing through levels of Halo online, but very few actually realize the essence of silence in games like Half life or Metroid prime.

Of Dicks and pussies in videogames
Neelesh | 9:47 AM on 06.21.2007 5 comments

What would life be without that little hole...Nintendo would never have been established, Miyamoto would not have been born, where would Atari stick those Carts for their awful 2600, Compact Discs would not be the same so would DVD’s, and Blu Rays....I think I’ve I‘ve covered everything...Fuck I forgot porn how dumb of me...now its complete...Oh no wait...ESS EEE ECKS (S--E--X!!!! In the English language for a retard)...Is it really that important? My brain asks me...yeah you fricking moron...do you expect to have a god Damn orgasm using your puny little hand till you are seventy...you need to be fed through tubes...

Man am I a dick or what...Damn right I am...The hole (read “The pussy”) is God greatest gift to MAN-kind...man being highlighted in capital and circled, underlined.. And there I go rambling onto wired shit...but a pussy beats a dick any day even where videogames are concerned...Here are moments in recent gaming that can be labeled as complete a Dick headed moment whereas certain others satisfy us just like an oozing pussy...

Kojima San breaks the 360 into two by calling it “DVD” and saying that MSG4 needs a “movie theater” to run not some Outdated DVD-Man I have even more respect for him now...definitely a PUSSY moment

Microsoft’s Elite 360 with a 120 gig hard drive and an HDMI port- Have you never heard size does not matter-only a dick could come up with a thing like that.

Capcom committing adultery...claims to be influenced by the “Devil” himself, hence goes multiplatform- and I thought the Yakuza were all about Loyalty. No dicks or balls whatsoever.

Resistance Fall of Man the only tolerable exclusive game for the PS3 since its launch- The King might just lose its DICK to its invaders, what the fuck is the company thinking, they expect us to pay for Area 51 set in World War II, ... Japan not included they don’t care whether one has a dick or not, most tolerant region in the world Na...

Suda’s claims of No more heroes being more Violent and gritty than Manhunt 2- this game has Juices flowing out of it...wonder why the dicks( magazines/websites) have not hyped it enough...A pussy moment to savor indeed...

Metal Gear solid :The future on the 360,720,PS3,PS4,
Neelesh | 2:33 PM on 06.20.2007 1 comments

This Is a part of an article that I had written on an Indian gaming blog "http://www.gameguru.in/"

"What I believe or like to believe is, Snake shall rise once again from the ashes and face his Biological father Big Boss on the realm of Outer haven or Zanzibar Island (get the thoughts of XBLA, VC and PSN out and away), a complete (inset Jaw dropping, Mind Numbing, Polygon screaming, heart wrenching) remake of the original 8 bit games is a possible direction of the series. Enthusiasts shall finally witness Snake when he was all gung ho action variety, maybe he’ll loose some of the sensible stuff he keeps ranting about in the series and take a rookie’s form instead, similar to Big Boss from Snake eater, all this in Life like realism.

Most readers might Love to barrage with me hate mail/comments when I make my next statement, The game shall be slated for the exclusively for the 360 with no PS3 port , the game will be scheduled for a 2009-2010 release, this game shall not be developed by Kojima,(He already has his hands full with the MGS movie, slated for release around that time), It shall be more of a collaboration effort between Microsoft Game studious and Konami.(with the Money Money Money... score Playing in the background)"

"The other way for progression, is to trace the history of the remaining characters in the game, the most prominent one out of the lot stands out in the form of Liquid Snake, according to the History of Metal gear ,Liquid is equally skilled as his twin brother and has had his share of action prior defecting, actually giving him the tag as a nemesis does not quite suit him, recent gaming trends show that an anti-hero or a character with shades of grey fits in better with the audience, its not like Snake ain’t cool enough, there is something really good about being Grey. Vader is the perfect example; scores of people choose to remember him as the Hero of the Skywalker clan rather than his “UGLY” son Luke. Liquid seems the perfect ruthless spy who kills for his own sadistic pleasure, a man on the path of vengeance does come up as a really strong character to tinker around with. "

Checky the whole thingy out...
