Is the Halo series worth the hype?
Neelesh | 1:53 PM on 06.21.2007 11 comments

Facts always sound stranger than fiction, whenever I do a bit of work on my site its interesting to Notice most of my regular readers (Knuckleheads of the first order) love to blast ,me with a bunch Of stats, my question remains how far do these figures do in actually establishing the greatness of the game.

Halo is a perfect example of a millions of users falling in for a hype-machine created by Microsoft, I do admit the game was good in certain ways but majority of the game lacked substance that would actually keep me engrossed to my Screen.

The vehicles were cool, the dual weapons were kinda okay,(They been done loads of time, Blood 2 was the First FPS to do that) ,the Covenants are too colorful to be bad and mean, they look right out of an episode form Tele tubbies, there is no solid plot holding the game, If anyone picks up and plays through the game, they’ll have no clue of what happened or how it happened, unless you look stuff up on M$ paid fan sites to get a grasp of what actually is going on.

The best bit about the game is and has to be Master Chief, Bungie has managed to get the lead character dot on, he ranks close to Snake or Freeman as a game character, but the rest of game is a monotonous winding road that keeps raking up a dry well with its sequels.

People will go and pick up a billion copies of Halo, but only one copy of Okami gets shelved in the meantime. People crib about American not making quality games, when developers do make quality games the crowd just fails to notice its efforts.

I’ve never come across a single site that keeps ranting about Psi-ops and the possibilities of its sequel, post release of Stranglehold or what about Psychonauts, even a game like “second sight” had a much deeper storyline than Halo, People call themselves hardcore gamers by playing through levels of Halo online, but very few actually realize the essence of silence in games like Half life or Metroid prime.

haha billions, hardly! I don't think any game could.

(Yes, I know it was a joking exaggeration)

I would have picked up Okami but it was PS2 only and i don't own/want a PS2 so i didn't get it.

My main pull for the Halo games though is that they aren't too taxing on my brain, i can have a laugh with my mates on multiplayer, split-screen or over Live.

Not only that but i actually enjoy the story and have read all 4 books and the Graphic Novel.

But i can totally see why people get ticked off with Halo fans.

They aren't brilliant games like Okami or Ico or other games of that ilk but that they're damn fun and that's why they get hyped up.

Plus a standard Sci-Fi FPS is gonna appeal to mainstream gamers more than an obscure game about a wolf that looks like a cartoon. Unfortunate, yes, but that's how it goes sadly.

Well, I personally like Halo. The story is kinda weak. I mostly like it for the multiplayer.

There are a few reasons why Halo is so popular. For one, it is solid as hell.

1)Just about everything the game does from controls to atmosphere to multiplayer, it gets spot on. There are very few flaws to the game and none of those flaws are major. Granted it's not the first to do everything it does, but it is one of the only examples on consoles to do them all right in one place.

2)The mythology is deep. At surface level it doesn't seem that way and even if you only play the game then you're not getting most of it, but look to the books and comics and other source material and you will find one of the deepest mythos in Run & Gun FPS history. All of it is looked after and approved by Bungie just as much as Lucas watches over his Star Wars mythology.

3)As you said, MasterChief is a cool character. He's badass and mysterious and even cooler once you get into his backstory.

This article completely overlooks the multiplayer.
Halo has one of the most customizable and balanced multiplayer modes around.

i agree, i picked up an xbox a few months ago and i have to agree, halo is just a lil over hyped. graphically it looks good but outside of that it's just a generic FPS, i've yet to try the multi-player but that is one of the places i find it weak. timesplitters has to be one of my favorite FPS cuz not only is the story fun but the multi-player is fun as well. and for someone like me who doesn't have friends i can at least play multi-player against bots which i wish halo could do.

I'm going disagree with you on your opinion here. The game has a lot going for it. Number one being that it is, as Guitar mentioned, "solid as hell."

The game play is well done and if you look at the missions and the way they are carried out its very nice. You, as Master Chief, fight your way from point A to point B then, once you have the information you need you turn around and move on to the next point. I personally think that's a great idea. Bungie created a very plausible game world for us and I'm appreciate the game.

But, I understand that not everyone will like it.

I do agree on the Multiplayer bit all of you have quoted on...the game does have top notch production feild in almost every way...but as a game it has a very weak base.It defines First person (shooting)a genre that has somehow evolved into something more than shooting,I do not agree with the scores the game recieves....as a matter of fact I feel Metal Gear also addresses very few flaws with its milking sequels...Halo 2 could have been made into a much better game than what came out...am talking about single player here..Gears did both the things halo has done previously with a bit of Panache that needs to be introduced with Halo 3,but from what it looks the developers have created a painting with a new brush...I only think its not the masterpiece that makes everyone go around.
