About Me

Yo. I just graduated from Syracuse University, with a major in Television/Film at the Newhouse School.

I love video games, gaming/nerd culture, examining games critically as an art form, and all the useless trivia and data surrounding games. I am a consumer whore. Gaming is obviously one of my primary hobbies, though not the only one. I'm a regular on Failcast.

I also watch anime and read manga when I get the chance. It's mostly just mainstream and shonen stuff as a result of the ease of accessibility, though I try to see some more obscure series when I get the chance.

I have epic hair.

I play bass guitar and have been in a band. It's broken up. I lived the dream.

I love rock. I tend to gravitate towards various types of punk, alternative, or indie, though I'll listen to anything. Bob Dylan rocks. Also, random weird underground stuff. The NES sound chip was amazing.

Nintendo forums shut down, does anyone really care?
Bob Muir | 4:28 PM on 09.17.2007 9 comments

Were you a member of the Nintendo NSider Forums? No? Neither was I, so I assume we both could care less that the forums are being taken down indefinitely. Apparently they just made the switch to read-only and will completely disappear on September 24th.

The reason? Nintendo.com is getting a major overhaul to support how amazingly well the DS and Wii have sold. (Jeez Nintendo, you don't have to keep reminding us, we know you take money baths every night.)

I'm guessing this is not a permanent destruction of official Nintendo forums, as they do end it the announcement with "We'll see you soon elsewhere on the Web." I'm sure that once the redesign is done, they'll have some new forums for the fanboys to go crazy over.

Funny how a giant corporation has to take down their forums to do a redesign, while a smaller site like Dtoid is able to do it all in the span of a weekend without disabling any functions.

There's no reason to participate in Nintendo's forums if you are over the age of 15 at all. They're too heavily moderated, and one thing that they would be good for (exchanging friend codes) is prohibited because Nintendo doesn't want the forums to become a breeding ground for child molesters. Independent forums like Dtoid or Nintendorks that don't have to cater to all ages (and thus potentially face criticism of the public at large) fill the niche.

Still, being in the Nintendo chat room when I first got online 7 years ago was fun.

I should mention it's not all Nintendo's fault the forums sucked, they were basically GameFAQs with a bit more moderation.

I've got a Nintendo.com account, but I mostly just do it to register my games and get the goofy downloads for it. Never once looked into their forums.

Wait, Nintendorks is still alive? I haven't logged onto there in years.

@Mxyzptlk:

Yeah, the messageboard is still going strong... well, the one that launched a couple years ago. The main page crashed due to database corruption or some such right around the time of the Wii launch, and Brandon hasn't gotten around to fixing it. There were problems with spam accounts, too, so registration has been subject to approval for months. The IRC channel is going strong, though.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
