There comes a time in every man's life when they must leave the warm, moist cushioning of their mother's womb and venture forth into the cold, dark world of reality to contend with murderous clowns and surprise buttsecks. That sentence is just slightly relevant to what I'm about to say. Dtoid IRC, sponsored by the distinguished IRCartel, is finally moving servers. No more will we have to put up with Gamesurge's suckiness. Instead, we'll be hosting the room on DynastyNet. Along with the move come a few improvements: 1) Better connections Some people have had trouble connecting to Gamesurge's servers in the past, and we're hoping the switch to DynastyNet should fix that. 2) Voices for regulars Dtoid IRC is not moderated (mode +m) since we've never had any problems with spam, so all those auto-voices (+v) aren't really doing us much good. Under the new system, voices will be given out to IRC regulars who have hung out in the channel and moved beyond just staying for a few days. So if you want a useless status symbol, lurk less and talk more! 3) Stats Again, not a major upgrade, but something that should be fun to use. After a week of solid use, a channel is eligible to get daily stats collected on it, ranging from random quotes of its users to most-used words to number of actions done. These are updated at midnight every night and should be fun to look at. 4) New Ops I can't say who quite yet, but a few long-time channel regulars will be getting ops and halfops, seeing as I'm currently the only active op in IRC. (Any previous op will get their op back upon request.) So how do you get here? First of all, make sure you have an IRC client, such as mIRC if you're on Windows or Colloquy if you're on OS X. (Linux users should be used to fending for themselves.) Then, connect with this info: Server: irc.dynastynet.net Channel: #destructoid Once on, say hello to whoever is on and get to registering your nickname. Choose a nickname with the following command: /nick YOURNICKHERE And register for your exclusive use it with this command: /ns register PASSWORD EMAIL Note: a few names have been set aside for previous IRC users. If this is the case for you, contact me and I'll sort it out for you. That's pretty much it. I'd suggest telling your IRC client to auto-connect to irc.dynastynet.net every time you turn it on. Here are some additional start-up commands (in proper order) you'll want to put in your client to auto-execute when you start up the program: /nick YOURNICKHERE (restores your nickname to what you want your default to be) /ns identify PASSWORD (identifies yourself to the network, like signing-in, so it doesn't kick you off your own nick) /join #destructoid (joins the room automatically) Happy typing! P.S. IRCartel "members": your cblog banners will be updated soon in order to reflect the change of servers. You don't have to do anything but maybe refresh your cache once it's changed.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

Oh, so pretty,
I feel pretty and witty and bright!
And I pity
Any girl who isn't me tonight... in IRC.
Just kidding... the whole situation is more like Grease.
After which it kinda picked up and opened up etc.
Pew, I may need your help again... heh...
Err how are we supposed to call it in the meantime? The way we figured it, we'd keep the channel running since not many people use IRC. Any editor will of course get ownership straight away. I doubt any of us on it really care what it's being called in the meantime, do you want to have it renamed as well?
Destructoid is copyrighted and should not be used with out express written consent from niero.
BTW, bluewolf your a loser.
The IRC channel is not closing, because lots of Dtoiders enjoy using it. As of the moment I'm typing this, it's now Unofficial Dtoid IRC, so go ahead and keep coming. Just be aware that this is not officially endorsed by any editor and is (as of now) just a gathering of Dtoid community members who like to hang out and show our support for Dtoid.
Help me Obi-Ron Kenobi, you're our only hope!
Specifically speaking, I had 10 emails this weekend complaining about things that happened on Destructoid IRC in regards to what somebody said about Kittie's blog or things about the home page editorial. Some of these people didn't understand that the community runs the IRC channel. Instead, they were asking how I could possibly let this go on in my company, etc etc. Even worse -- somebody was apparently chatting pretending to be site editors. This is funny, but you can see how dangerous that can be if somebody decides to pretend to be me and does a bunch of racist stuff or whatever under "Destructoid's official chat". Instead of trying to manage all of the above, which I can't yet, I just asked for a change of name so there is no misunderstanding. I can't have that kind of liability, and it hurts everybody when it goes unchecked.
Obviously, for every 1 person that sends an email there are another 100 that just form opinions and don't bother writing. The same thing happened with people who wanted me to influence what Aaron was doing with his radio show. These are 2 things I don't have the resources to support yet -- as you can see Cblogs needs my attention first!
So in the end, please continue to enjoy Necro's IRC channel and what Aaron does on BlueWolf72 radio -- just keep in mind that if you're not clear about who's in charge of your project and something bad happens people will come to me first when I'm not ready to take responsibility yet. Big emphasis on Yet!
I understand you gotta look out for Dtoid as a company, but I'm confused about what complaints you could have gotten, since it was Vent regulars who were initiating all the attacks. Later, they came into IRC and talked about it. In terms of banning people, I tried to follow what I've seen of Dtoid so far and allow it to continue, which might have been poor judgement, judging from the complaints. (Furthermore, we're completely unrelated with whatever Bluewolf is doing, including his radio.)
Anyways, I completely understand where you're coming from. We are officially unoffical now, so hopefully that won't damage the reputation of so fine a site. Also, even though the new channel is unofficial, editors are free to come in and reserve nicknames on the server to prevent use by other users. (Just remember to say something at least once a month.) And I'm looking forward to Clogs 0.3 and whatever else you're planning! Go Dtoid!
