An Appreciation of the Playstation Boot Screen
Namakubi | 12:22 AM on 07.08.2009 19 comments

When the Playstation 2 was announced as backwards compatible, I did what most sane people did: I sold my Playstation 1. Yeah, it was fun while it lasted, but the future was coming, and I could bring all my old games with me. One less game system to clutter the house with.

The Playstation 2 served me well for my gaming needs for a while, but when it came to PSX games, something didn't sit right with me, and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Then it hit me, I was missing half the boot screen every time I fired up a PS1 game!

The greatest boot-up you will ever see

Nothing puts you into the right mind set to play a Playstation game more than this. Nothing STILL says "Playstation" to me more than seeing this before starting up Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, Twisted Metal, or Final Fantasy VII. In some ways, these two screens and their distinct, rumbling electronic tones are the sign of a new era, a new era that boomed from the heavens, "IT IS 32-BITS, AND IT IS GOOD."

I love you, Playstation boot screen.

P.S. I later bought a new Playstation console JUST so I could hear and see this.

This makes me really happy. I haven't played an original PlayStation since I was a little kid, and thus totally forgot about that boot screen.

It's 18 seconds long? I wonder how many minutes or hours of my life were spent watching this very boot screen..

I'm pretty sure the second half of the boot screen was kept for the PS2, but it's not the same without the initial BOOOOM.

When you saw that, it was like stepping into the future.

I still have 2 PSX consoles in my closet as backups in case I want to hear that screen. God I love it.

Speaking of boot screens: Dreamcast? I thought it was neat you could skip it if you were in a rush ;D, and those droplets...they're in my head!

@Magnalon: hells yes for the Dreamcast

-also, not anywhere near iconic, but the ninja noise boot for gamecube with four controllers plugged in all holding Z? epic.

I still prefer the PS3 one a little bit. Shit's classy.

Damn dude, you're so right. This immediately smells like Metal Gear Solid and Gran Tourismo 2 in this room when that played.

You're totally right, man. That boom at the beginning just screams, "THIS IS THE FUUUUUUUUUUUTURE!"

Speaking of boot up screens, i think sony should update the ps3 one and use the ones from this years e3 trailer

look in this vid

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4E0e-ZCn14&feature=fvst

at 2:22 you can see the one i'm talking about, it's just a cool sound with the original playstation logo flashing quickly

they could also use the one after the trailer (at 4:49) in the vid with the distorted female voice saying playstation

that would be awesome

You're crazy man, I could never get rid of a console. I still have my original SNES from when I was 3 years old! But I also think I'm one of the odd ball PS1 players. The PS1 never meant Metal Gear Solid to me. To me, it meant Ape Escape. Yeah, motherfucking Ape Escape.

Man. I probably haven't seen/heard that in five or more years, and DAMN does it bring back memories. I remember the day my friend brought home his brand new PlayStation and I came over to check it out.

He had a big-screen and surround sound, so this boot-up rocked us. It was awesome. And then we played...two of the worst games of all time: Kileak: The DNA Imperative and 2Xtreme.

Still, it was awesome.

I was not excited for it in terms of technology, but the PS1 was really amazing. It had such an original library too, it was kind of a derivative to the Dreamcast in the sense of originality spirit (and great Capcom support too).

That said it had a realllllly sexy intro too.

Damn is it sexy :] Also, not in relation to consoles, but who can forget the SEGA! sound :) That shit is the bees knees nigger! This SEG-GAH! parody thing is quite funny also :)

Also, the Dreamcast one is beautiful :) So glad I have one :P

Anybody ever seen this? I've never seen it before:

64DD? with Mario?
