About me: I am a thin, sickly little man who spends most of his free time sitting next to a computer reading destructoid, digg, and whatever other site where I can find things to do to avoid doing anything important. Starcraft 2 balance worries

My favorite thing about Starcraft (despite my incredible suckage) has always been its balance. In no other RTS that I have ever played have the races been so equally matched. For every strategy there is a counter strategy, and a counter for that as well. But with the of new SC2 media coming out, I've been worried. Take alook at these 2 videos (the terran one's long so sxkip through it):

Now, my problem is that, while the Zerg now seem like an unstoppable force of pure rape and destruction, the Terrans seem like, well, the Terrans. The Zerg looks to have much more powerful units, and with their speed and cheapness it looks like they will be able to annihalate the Terran forces without much of a problem. Are my worries justified, or do you think that Blizzard will make this game as balanced as the last?

I�m not worried as I�m certain they�ll work to balance out the factions. A lot of the Zerg videos I�ve seen have been pretty short and haven�t done any discussion on what are the counters to specific units that they�ve shown with the more extensive demonstrations of the Protoss and the Terrans.

Didn't you see that video of Saviour being beaten by a zealot rush? The Zerg will definitely be beatable no matter what impression you may form BEFORE the game's even released.
Blizzard have made multiplayer the focal point of sc2 so I really doubt they are gonna screw up on it and if they do they will certainly patch it.

Also remember this, you saw a group of mutalisks, a few hydralisks and some zerglings taking on ONE bunker of marines. No single bunker is going to stand up to that long at all. If the terrans had had some Vikings or wraiths or goliaths also attacking, it might have been different. Don't forget, the strength of the Zerg is their ability to creat troops quickly and cheaply. If a Zerg player goes up against a Terrn with at least 1.5:1 ratio, he will lose.

I'm sure if the Zergs and Terrans are unbalanced that the game testers would pick up on it first thing. This game has been one of the most anticipated sequels in recent memory, so the production team is going to sweat every tiny detail. If one side is better than the other then that's a HUGE detail (oxymoron I know), and one they are surely aware of and fixing.

Also, I'm glad you took my advice and got a kick-ass avatar.

You have to remember that those videos are made specifically to showcase a certain race's power, meaning they cheat and make them more powerful than normal so it looks good, it wouldn't do to build up how awesome the Terrans/Protoss/Zerg are and then have them get their asses kicked in a release video.

I think you're thoroughly underestimating how used to balancing games Blizzard is! I just watched a developer commentary on the new Zerg units and one section showed a huge (HUGE) Zerg swarm rolling against what I think was a protoss choke point. The Zerg were getting held and slaughtered by the tonne, never looking close to getting through, yet just kept coming. Now, I think that's going to be something we see very often in SC2; moments that are initially too close to call.

And that's balance.

Have you played Starcraft? Then have no worries. They will won't screw this up. They know that if they screw up Starcraft 2, they will have full blown war with Korea.

I think the point of the videos was to showcase the Zerg. The Terrans dont even fight back at parts, they just stand there and get raped.

I wouldn't worry about it, Blizzard is so hardcore about getting race balance right that I doubt it will be a problem in retail. Beta may be a different story, but thats the point of beta.

Seriously though, Blizzard is fully aware that people love SC because of how balanced it is. They won't release this until they're sure it's balanced properly.

Besides what has already been said, Blizzard is consulting professional SC players, so even if they screw up there will be someone there to make them notice.

In case all fails, patches :P.

Blizzard will get the balance right, I'm sure they probably have a staff devoted entirely to just playing multiplayer matches constantly to get some statistics out of it.
