The Genre I Forgot: The PC RPG
Nad Crusher | 9:08 PM on 05.31.2008 11 comments

Over the past couple of weeks I've been furiously trading my games through Goozex and picking up gems from the past that I have either missed out on, or want to play again for nostalgia's sake. As I have been browsing through the website's enormous library, however, I've noticed something. Throughout my gaming career, I have pretty much ignored an entire genre, the PC RPG. This is not because the category doesn't appeal to me, its just something that never came to mind when buying new games. Of course, this isn't to say I've never played a PC RPG; I've been playing Diablo 2 for almost 5 years now and had a horrible, horrible affair with WoW for a while too, I just don't feel that these 2 games alone represent an entire genre that has undergone years of innovation and evolution. That is why I've decided to take time to visit what I've missed out on for all these years and play many of the gems of the genre that I've heard so much about. I am going to start a semi-regular series in which I detail my experiences with various games, and how, if at all, they effect me as a gamer. I hope to explore the intricacies of a game type I know little about, and find what each new game breings to the table.

For my first step into the PC RPG world, I will be playing Freedom Force Vs. The Third Reich, as it comes highly reccomended from a friend, but, being new to the genre, I would appreciate any suggestions for games I should play after that. It doesn't matter if they're old or new, I just want to know of any PC RPGs that you have enjoyed and think I should experience for myself. I only ask one thing:

No MMORPGs please. I want to focus on games that have a definate ending and don't require a huge time commitment to play. Plus I finally managed to kick my WoW addiction and would prefer not to get re-introduced.

I look forward to any suggestions, as well as playing all the PC RPGs I can. Freedom Force just finished installing so hopefully I'll be able to start my musings in not too long!

Best day ever! (Not GTA Related)
Nad Crusher | 3:18 PM on 04.29.2008 11 comments

Today has turned out to be the greatest day I have ever experienced, despite my lack of Grand Theft Auto. Why, do you ask?For starters, while rummaging around in an old suitcase that I was about to throw out, I found my DS which had been lost for about two months along with Final Fantasy 6 Advance, still waiting to be beaten.

Second, after dropping my stylus under the couch while playing Pokemon (I can play Pokemon again!), I found my cell phone charger, also missing for close to a month!

Next, I ran into a frriend who gave me a free gram of ...err herbal supplements.

Finally, to make this day the winningest in history, I LEARNED HOW TO PHOTOSHOP BEARDS!!!!

I challenge anyone, all of the screenwriters in hollywood, all of the musicians in anywhere, all of the poets in coffeeshops, any creative mind at all, to think up a day that is better than this one. You can't do it, YOU CAN'T.

Also, this blog does not fail due to the sheer amount of win.

3d returns! (the glasses kind)
Nad Crusher | 3:07 PM on 04.20.2008 13 comments

Recently, having loved the original Trackmania Nations, I downloaded the new and amazingly improved Trackmania Nations Forever. When I started up the game for the first time, I went through my regular routine of configuring my graphics settings when I came across this:

YOU CAN USE 3D FUCKING GLASSES!!!

This is probably the most awesome idea ever, and is perfects for a game like trackmania due to the high speeds and crazy shenanigans (shennanigans?). Then I realized something, I don't have any 3d glasses. Having a need to quench my thirst for trackmania in full 3d, I did some research and found that I can get a pair online for about 50 cents American (unless anyone wants to send me some for free?). But the real fruit of my research was coming across this:

Theres a Hannah Montana 3d movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now I definetly need these glasses.

Also, I've decided to include a picture of Hannah in all my future posts, enjoy!

After 9 years of trying on and off to beat the first race (Australia) in F1 Race for the gameboy, picking the game up for a few days then getting frustrated and putting it away for a year or two before trying again, I FINALLY DID IT!!!!!

Next up is Canada. With any luck, this may only take 5 more years or less!

I can take this guy.

Hannah Montana: Great Game or Greatest Game?
Nad Crusher | 7:12 PM on 04.03.2008 11 comments

About 2 weeks ago, a friend of mine bought Hannah Montana: Spotlight World Tour for his niece‘s birthday, only to find out that she already had the game. Having lost the receipt, and not being able to sell the game due to the fact that it was Hannah Montana, he gave it to me. Now, I am not a Hannah Montana fan, nor have I ever seen the show, but when I get a game I have to play it. After a few minutes of playtime, I realized that I had to review it.

The Premise: You are Hannah Montana, superstar teen pop sensation. You have to put on shows so that you can get famous and go shopping. Throughout the game you’ll move to bigger and bigger venues and get to enjoy animated CGI cut scenes between Hannah and her friends. I have to admit, just the idea of this premise alone made me want to play this game. I mean, shopping? That’s just genius. I’m sure whoever wrote this plot is well on his way to winning a Pulitzer.

The Gameplay: In order to get Hannah to progress through the ranks of superstar status you have to make her dance. That’s right, its a rhythm game! As arrows scroll across the bottom of the screen, you must move the wiimote left, right, up, down or even forward as they cross the star at the end of the line. Sometimes you’ll even have to strum your wiimote air guitar style or wave to your fans! While most games would have you performing these actions in tunes with the songs that are playing, Hannah Montana, being the work of creative genius it is, has the music play in the background with absolutely no correlation to what you’re doing! When the controls respond (sometimes they don’t just to shake things up a bit!), the game feels like a mix of Samba De Amigo, Dance Dance Revolution and Superman 64. After you put on your shows, you get to travel with Hannah to shops around the world and shop for all the latest fashions, which all seem to look exactly the same, but that’s the real essence of fashion isn’t it?

The Graphics: Simply stunning. CGI cut scenes take place on an empty stage, which everyone knows is the hardest object to render. After these beautiful cinematics the concert gameplay graphics stun you with their beauty. The life like standing animations almost make it seem like the mouths of the characters are moving when they talk. These are only topped by the shopping visuals, which are at least 25% better than those of that celebrity dress up flash game.

The Audio: 15 tracks of Hannah’s greatest hits! Or maybe it’s one. Who knows, who cares, its fucking HANNAH MONTANA for god’s sake. She could recite Longfellow over 2 repeating guitar chords and it would FUCKING ROCK.

The Verdict: If you are a pedophile, a ten year old, or blind and mute, this game is a 10/10. Fuck it, this game is a 10/10 no matter what, GO BUY IT.

She rocks SO hard.
On my cock.

about me

About me: I am a thin, sickly little man who spends most of his free time sitting next to a computer reading destructoid, digg, and whatever other site where I can find things to do to avoid doing anything important. When I am not waqsting my life away next to a monitor (which is what I do in class as well), I enjoy skateboarding, playing guitar, mixing phat beats on my turntables (they actually aren't that phat), the occasional round of fapping, and of course, gaming. Also, cocks. Wait, that probably wasn't the right place to put that. Oh well.

Consoles I own (or have ever owned): Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Color, Gba fat, DS fat, PSP, SNES, PS1, N64, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox, Xbox360, Wii
