I decided to give EVE-Online a shot because I'm in desperate need of an MMO (damn Warhammer delays...), and the overall idea of the game is pretty cool. Space piracy, intergalactic warfare, corporations battling it out for power, and spaceships! How much better could a videogame get?
In the last couple of hours, I've seen good things, and I've seen horrific flaws. Let's get the bad out of the way first. The whole interface just feels...clunky and awkward. There are so many things you need to know just to move around. Hell, it took me around 15 min to figure out where my inventory was. Maybe it's just because I haven't played it enough, but it was pretty dang boring. Fly here, fly there, warp, mine, shoot a mercenary, dock...it just seemed like it could be so much more fast-paced and intriguing. I also had around three or four missions in a row where I was tasked with taking goods from one station to the next.
The good features were enough to keep me playing. First off, gorgeous graphics. This game really looks good. Second, it's an MMO in space, that itself is awesome. The best thing about this game, however, is it's depth. The economy, faction standing, corporations, ship customization, professions, everything! It can be overwhelming at times, but the sheer open-endedness is amazing.
I'm not sure if I'm going to sign-up for this one, but I'll definitely continue my trial to see if it gets any better. If it doesn't, oh well. It's not like I've payed for it yet.
Make sure you check out the trial first. I thought it was going to be really cool, but it was a total bore.
