My First Video Game Nightmare:
When I was little we had one of those huge shitty TVs that start from the floor and somehow end up scaling the wall to your ceiling, anyways... I barely remember that TV, my cousin used to play this game on the giant TV and it gave me nightmares, especially when he would enter those damn caves and fall in the pits, not to mention get chased by the bats/keese.
>> As I got older I figured out that the game wasn't scary at all, I even went back and confronted it, and I found out the controls were horrible instead. :/
...Ever since then... I've not had a video game nightmare.
Roots:
Technically, the first game I ever played was Combat...I was unable to comprehend the game at my age, and never took interest in it.
The first consoles I ever owned were what my parents owned, which were the Atari 2600, the NES, and the Gameboy.
That being said, born in 1989, I had caught the end of the third generation of gaming.
When I think about it... DAMN; I was playing video games when I was so young.
I learned how to tie my shoes by playing Mario Bros 3. What had happened is my parents divorced before I was born, my mom ended up taking my biological father's things, i.e. his consoles and games. We had lots of them, games, like Combat and Pac-Man...
However, I was only interested in the NES. When I was a little kid I had been playing Mario Bros 3., Contra, and Ice Climbers.
...damn it! I can't do this now. WTF?!!
It's funny, to this day I remember beating Contra when I was 5 years old. Today I can't beat the second stage now but I remember all the boss fights and I remember that purple thing too from Energy Zone, and the beating heart at the end...
Sadly, I never grew up with a Sega, and computers used to SUCK ASS when I was in elementary and middle school. Nice graphics cards and fancy glowing towers were not really even in majority. Most my friends in Ohio never had them, and I grew up in southern Ohio.
So to continue on, I was growing up pretty fast, I remember going to Church and we had a huge church, they had a gaming hall for the youth, which was my first encounter with Sega Genesis, or Sega period. In fact, as I went around, Sega Genesis was found everywhere, even at dentist offices. I believe it still is found at some dentist offices today!
Well I liked it, the first Genesis games I played were Aladdin and several Sonic games, I even remember Vectorman, Earthworm Jim, and Toe Jam & Earl. I'd go to church just to play them.
For some reason I kept floating back to Nintendo though. I was hooked on Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past. I kept beating them over and over again.
As I went through middle school, I wanted a Playstation, but it felt no sooner than the Playstation had come out, the N64 had come out too. I ended up getting the Playstation, and a N64 came the a few Christmas's after that. By the time the Playstation had came out, I had played tons of SNES games, I'd say about 200, as most my friends had a SNES and we had a sharing system going on way before that. Well the Playstation truly sold me on Final Fantasy, no, it wasn't VII, I was in love with IX. My friend Daniel owned 7, I owned 8,9 and we used to swap them around. Prior to 9, I had played the original NES games, and the super nintendo 5, 6.
The first game I had for N64 was Donkey Kong 64, and I bought Legend of Zelda, and World Rampage because I enjoyed the games before that. Turok, Doom, Duke Nukem, Super Mario 64, Rainbow Six, Goldeneye... The N64 got me half involved into the FPS scene.
I bought so many games for my 64. Then, the last year of middle school emulators were being made... I ended up selling my N64 as it became obsolete and the value began to decrease. I kept my snes games. Even have my near-perfect condition Super Mario Legend of Seven Stars to this very day. I sold my Playstation as well, but kept the games. With the money I bought a Gamecube.
The PS2 was bought by my stepdad. We got SOCOM, I bought Kingdom Hearts, Disgaea, XIII, Katamari Damacy, and all sorts of games. I still have a lot of games for my PS2. It became mine when my parents divorced. I really enjoyed FF10, but 10-2 was a disaster and I felt like stabbing someone after playing it. It was like Final Fantasy meets Sim Rainforest on drugs.
The Now:
I'm in the US Navy. I'm a Navy Airman, Aviation Ordnance, and I am also going to be a pilot soon.
I went from being a passionate gamer, to something greater.
...and something lesser, I have become a casual gamer that crams military jargon and instrumental flight books. (joy)
You should see the size of these books! I am currently working for a low budget diner that doesn't pay shit for cash.
So I'm holding out on buying a PS3, my friend is letting me borrow his (really wants one for himself though). I'm boycotting XBOX forever. Sorry about that, halo fanatics. :3
Anyways, my view on things:
I feel Sony has baited everyone astray when I read things about the PS3, as for the XBOX, they are doing the same thing. I never bought a Sega Genesis, but I grew up when they were releasing console after console, and my friends ended up with less money than I had. The generations of gaming were having a crazy technology race, and what they did was just what is happening now.
With the XBOX and the PS3, I know it's just a harddrive and minor firmware/hardware changes, but honestly, it shouldn't even cost a service charge to upgrade when you have to pay $400 to get a console. Nintendo has never done that to people. No they do worse things though, and they aren't innocent.
I graduated high school having modded my Wii, and all sorts of things because of what is happening to NoA. It works, and I don't believe in cheating the system. I modded it just to play Fatal Frame IV. I'm starting to see faults with NoA, yeah, I said it. I realize what Nintendo is doing to us, what they've been doing since the end of the N64. What happened? Why are we not getting the good games? Even so, why are we not getting good Wiiware titles? People buy the Episode shit. If people stopped buying the Episode games then we would have better Wiiware titles!
I can say the same about the commercial games for Wii. If people would stop buying up all the sports games, we would have our games at a reasonable release date. The scary thing is that games that were amazingly popular here, like Fatal Frame, Katamari Damacy... they won't be hitting the Wii because Nintendo of America doesn't want to publish them. Everything Nintendo does nowadays is to appeal to the casual gamer.
Instead, Sony gets to keep Katamari Damacy to themselves, well they always had it anyways; and any chance of Fatal Frame IV being localized is slim to none, aside the Zero4 team which has to basically hack the disc in order for it to work on an American Wii.
What kind of gamer am I? I love the old stuff. I bought a few Virtual Console titles, and realized I was tossing money at Nintendo for games that were outdated. Too much money. I realized, doing this would just make them want to port old games instead of new ones. I stopped. I already own all the games I am downloading, why the hell am I doing it?!
After becoming fed up, I softmodded my Wii, Homebrew Channel, Browser, and the sort. I just use the advanced ports of the old emulators I was used to when I was in high school. Let me tell you, they are cool as hell!
It's only the tip of the iceberg. I'm a very curious person, and ever since I was 3 years old, I have been taking things apart, putting them back together again, and exploring anything; everything I can. I grew up on not only video games, but books, and those Ohio fights, soccer, tennis, swimming, and now military! ^^
What do I want to be? Where am I heading? I do not think I want to go to college just yet, I want to see the world. I'm going to kill two birds with one stone. Come June 14th of 2010, I will be a US Airman, I'll attend college courses while on base.
I am a casual gamer now, I used to be a passionate gamer. Life for me changed so fast, and I'll always love old school gaming. I still emulate my NES on my Wii to this day. I am a loyal Nintendo fan, and I keep close to Sony, maybe one day soon in the next generation of gaming I can connect with Sony once again.
The price (biggest problem) and the lack of support for ps2/ps1 games killed my interest when I went to reach for my wallet.
I grew up with a family that didn't place heavy emphasis on gaming, not enough emphasis to go buy $500 dollars worth of shit to play them. At the time, it was Sega, now, to this day it is Sony.
I do not live with my parents. The XBOX out of the question . PS3; when the price drops. Wii was cheap, and Fatal Frame IV, Brawl, Animal Crossing, and The Conduit were my initial reason for buying it. Now that it is softmodded, it holds even greater value to me.
Besides the ever lessening renting of them.
