My First Video Game Nightmare:

When I was little we had one of those huge shitty TVs that start from the floor and somehow end up scaling the wall to your ceiling, anyways... I barely remember that TV, my cousin used to play this game on the giant TV and it gave me nightmares, especially when he would enter those damn caves and fall in the pits, not to mention get chased by the bats/keese.

>> As I got older I figured out that the game wasn't scary at all, I even went back and confronted it, and I found out the controls were horrible instead. :/

...Ever since then... I've not had a video game nightmare.

Roots:

Technically, the first game I ever played was Combat...I was unable to comprehend the game at my age, and never took interest in it.

The first consoles I ever owned were what my parents owned, which were the Atari 2600, the NES, and the Gameboy.

That being said, born in 1989, I had caught the end of the third generation of gaming.

When I think about it... DAMN; I was playing video games when I was so young.

I learned how to tie my shoes by playing Mario Bros 3. What had happened is my parents divorced before I was born, my mom ended up taking my biological father's things, i.e. his consoles and games. We had lots of them, games, like Combat and Pac-Man...

However, I was only interested in the NES. When I was a little kid I had been playing Mario Bros 3., Contra, and Ice Climbers.

...damn it! I can't do this now. WTF?!!

It's funny, to this day I remember beating Contra when I was 5 years old. Today I can't beat the second stage now but I remember all the boss fights and I remember that purple thing too from Energy Zone, and the beating heart at the end...

Sadly, I never grew up with a Sega, and computers used to SUCK ASS when I was in elementary and middle school. Nice graphics cards and fancy glowing towers were not really even in majority. Most my friends in Ohio never had them, and I grew up in southern Ohio.

So to continue on, I was growing up pretty fast, I remember going to Church and we had a huge church, they had a gaming hall for the youth, which was my first encounter with Sega Genesis, or Sega period. In fact, as I went around, Sega Genesis was found everywhere, even at dentist offices. I believe it still is found at some dentist offices today!

Well I liked it, the first Genesis games I played were Aladdin and several Sonic games, I even remember Vectorman, Earthworm Jim, and Toe Jam & Earl. I'd go to church just to play them.

For some reason I kept floating back to Nintendo though. I was hooked on Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past. I kept beating them over and over again.

As I went through middle school, I wanted a Playstation, but it felt no sooner than the Playstation had come out, the N64 had come out too. I ended up getting the Playstation, and a N64 came the a few Christmas's after that. By the time the Playstation had came out, I had played tons of SNES games, I'd say about 200, as most my friends had a SNES and we had a sharing system going on way before that. Well the Playstation truly sold me on Final Fantasy, no, it wasn't VII, I was in love with IX. My friend Daniel owned 7, I owned 8,9 and we used to swap them around. Prior to 9, I had played the original NES games, and the super nintendo 5, 6.

The first game I had for N64 was Donkey Kong 64, and I bought Legend of Zelda, and World Rampage because I enjoyed the games before that. Turok, Doom, Duke Nukem, Super Mario 64, Rainbow Six, Goldeneye... The N64 got me half involved into the FPS scene.

I bought so many games for my 64. Then, the last year of middle school emulators were being made... I ended up selling my N64 as it became obsolete and the value began to decrease. I kept my snes games. Even have my near-perfect condition Super Mario Legend of Seven Stars to this very day. I sold my Playstation as well, but kept the games. With the money I bought a Gamecube.

The PS2 was bought by my stepdad. We got SOCOM, I bought Kingdom Hearts, Disgaea, XIII, Katamari Damacy, and all sorts of games. I still have a lot of games for my PS2. It became mine when my parents divorced. I really enjoyed FF10, but 10-2 was a disaster and I felt like stabbing someone after playing it. It was like Final Fantasy meets Sim Rainforest on drugs.

The Now:

I'm in the US Navy. I'm a Navy Airman, Aviation Ordnance, and I am also going to be a pilot soon.

I went from being a passionate gamer, to something greater.
...and something lesser, I have become a casual gamer that crams military jargon and instrumental flight books. (joy)

You should see the size of these books! I am currently working for a low budget diner that doesn't pay shit for cash.

So I'm holding out on buying a PS3, my friend is letting me borrow his (really wants one for himself though). I'm boycotting XBOX forever. Sorry about that, halo fanatics. :3

Anyways, my view on things:

I feel Sony has baited everyone astray when I read things about the PS3, as for the XBOX, they are doing the same thing. I never bought a Sega Genesis, but I grew up when they were releasing console after console, and my friends ended up with less money than I had. The generations of gaming were having a crazy technology race, and what they did was just what is happening now.

With the XBOX and the PS3, I know it's just a harddrive and minor firmware/hardware changes, but honestly, it shouldn't even cost a service charge to upgrade when you have to pay $400 to get a console. Nintendo has never done that to people. No they do worse things though, and they aren't innocent.

I graduated high school having modded my Wii, and all sorts of things because of what is happening to NoA. It works, and I don't believe in cheating the system. I modded it just to play Fatal Frame IV. I'm starting to see faults with NoA, yeah, I said it. I realize what Nintendo is doing to us, what they've been doing since the end of the N64. What happened? Why are we not getting the good games? Even so, why are we not getting good Wiiware titles? People buy the Episode shit. If people stopped buying the Episode games then we would have better Wiiware titles!

I can say the same about the commercial games for Wii. If people would stop buying up all the sports games, we would have our games at a reasonable release date. The scary thing is that games that were amazingly popular here, like Fatal Frame, Katamari Damacy... they won't be hitting the Wii because Nintendo of America doesn't want to publish them. Everything Nintendo does nowadays is to appeal to the casual gamer.

Instead, Sony gets to keep Katamari Damacy to themselves, well they always had it anyways; and any chance of Fatal Frame IV being localized is slim to none, aside the Zero4 team which has to basically hack the disc in order for it to work on an American Wii.

What kind of gamer am I? I love the old stuff. I bought a few Virtual Console titles, and realized I was tossing money at Nintendo for games that were outdated. Too much money. I realized, doing this would just make them want to port old games instead of new ones. I stopped. I already own all the games I am downloading, why the hell am I doing it?!

After becoming fed up, I softmodded my Wii, Homebrew Channel, Browser, and the sort. I just use the advanced ports of the old emulators I was used to when I was in high school. Let me tell you, they are cool as hell!

It's only the tip of the iceberg. I'm a very curious person, and ever since I was 3 years old, I have been taking things apart, putting them back together again, and exploring anything; everything I can. I grew up on not only video games, but books, and those Ohio fights, soccer, tennis, swimming, and now military! ^^

What do I want to be? Where am I heading? I do not think I want to go to college just yet, I want to see the world. I'm going to kill two birds with one stone. Come June 14th of 2010, I will be a US Airman, I'll attend college courses while on base.

I am a casual gamer now, I used to be a passionate gamer. Life for me changed so fast, and I'll always love old school gaming. I still emulate my NES on my Wii to this day. I am a loyal Nintendo fan, and I keep close to Sony, maybe one day soon in the next generation of gaming I can connect with Sony once again.

The price (biggest problem) and the lack of support for ps2/ps1 games killed my interest when I went to reach for my wallet.

I grew up with a family that didn't place heavy emphasis on gaming, not enough emphasis to go buy $500 dollars worth of shit to play them. At the time, it was Sega, now, to this day it is Sony.

I do not live with my parents. The XBOX out of the question . PS3; when the price drops. Wii was cheap, and Fatal Frame IV, Brawl, Animal Crossing, and The Conduit were my initial reason for buying it. Now that it is softmodded, it holds even greater value to me.

The Past, The Now, The Future...

[old rant]

This is the third day after learning that Fatal Frame IV will not be officially ported to America.

...and on the third day I stayed up 24 hours, softmodded my Wii to the point that it can play cross region games. Including backups and do other useful things that the Wii should have been able to do in the first place.

The third day; I finally snapped and just said to myself while I was making breakfast, "F**king NoA, always depriving us of great games. All the Wii is used for is mini games, F.F.S., what is trying to be proven here? It's been two years since the initial retail release and all the Wii has to show for hot titles are mini-games!" I went and soft modded that morning after throwing a fit. Yes, my charged reaction for buying a Wii involved the near future release of The Conduit. I had bought my wii having only bought Brawl and Animal Crossing; I was anxiously awaiting the release of The Conduit. Yes, I bought my Wii in early 2009, and I am a little late to the Wii party. I admit I have less to bitch about than most other Wii owners from the get-go...

I even remember the day I bought my Wii everything seemed to be going awesome and I had not a complaint in the world. Why? Because the next week after I bought my Wii, SD cards were compatible. I can say the only thing I missed out on was the bitching, and I missed out on the free Internet Browser.

...now, I have unprecedented bitching rights, just a few, not a lot. Why is NoA not publishing a best selling survival horror? WHY? -... Just go mod your Wii, I encourage it. No, I'm not going to teach you how, if NoA wants to slap you in the face, slap them back. If they'd rather release episodes of Strong Bad or Monkey Island, family games or let EA Sports run the show and make all the money for them, by the gods, mod your wii!

It's been two years and the only classics they have put titles out for are Mario, Metroid, and Fire Emblem. There has not been a new Zelda; contrary to what you might believe, Twilight Princess was NOT a Wii original. It was simply a port from the Gamecube and it brings nothing new to the table. There has not been a new Pikman, there has not been a new F-Zero, there has not been a new Donkey Kong; contrary to what you might believe: Barrel Blast is a spin-off series and DOES. NOT. COUNT. . . Hell, Jungle Beat was a Gamecube game and is nothing but a damn port. ...

[/old rant]

... Don't get your hopes down though!

It seems Nintendo is going to kiss ass this year because they will be releasing games that I will buy towards the end of the year, and hell, maybe 2010 will be their best year yet. Check this lineup out:

New Super Mario Bros.:
----

It looks nice because when I read that they are bringing all of the original Koopalings back, I felt joyous.
4-player sidescrolling?! Sounds good to me.

I can't wait to see what roles they play, especially my favorite, Lemmy Koopa.

Metroid: The Other M:
----

Yeah, even though Metroid Prime 3 came out, it was not part of the original line of games, and Metroid: The Other M (good news) IS part of the original canon. It looks awesome, and I cannot wait! It looks like it's going to follow in the same style as the classic Metroid games instead of being a first person shooter.

Monster Hunter ~Tri:
----

Some good news. Some very good news, this game will be online co-op, and offline co-op, the graphics are gorgeous, and the gameplay looks wonderful. I have not tried my japanese backup yet, it's still on my harddrive. I'm afraid to load it because I know i'll get addicted and won't be able to read it. Which, would totally ruin the experience. I really should take up some Kanji lessons. Coming soon to america!

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles
----

I am anticipating this!...

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
----

...and this too!

Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom: New Generation of Heroes
----

I've already played it, and I can give you an inside scoop that you better not miss this game when it hits the shelves in America because I love it more than Street Fighter IV. It's 5 million times better, and if you don't agree after playing it; then you should be put in an insane asylum. The graphics will blow you away. You'd think it was a PS3 title even if you didn't have the high def gold plated cables. The FMV sequences are stunning, and there are lots of them. The roster is like a buffet, though not as vast as a KOF title.

Though the game feels as if when you pick up and play your winning streaks can easily be obtained by using specials, the controls are dead on fantastic, and the best gameplay experience is surprisingly used with the Wiimote + Nun-chuck. While most fighting games on the Wii, like Guilty Gear XX A-Core Plus or DBZ Tenkaichi Budokai 3 are best played using a Gamecube controller or Classic Controller Pro; you would find the best experience had using the Wiimote and Nun-chuck.

My only problem with the game is, once again, reading Kanji. I really wish I knew some. The game comes chalk full of minigames, survival mode, training, a collectors board to where you can view purchased bgm and character art, storyline, and videos using points won from arcade mode.

[new rant] I do not like Roll, and I do not like Viewtiful Joe. They do not belong in this game. The game should have put in Forte(Bass) or Zero to replace Roll. She's shorter than the other characters and annoying as hell. I would rather have fought Rockman's/Megaman's rival Bass/Forte; than to have fought a little girl with a broom and annoying voice...

As for Viewtiful, I know he's a Capcom character but once again, he's short, and it creates a power imbalance. It takes away from the gameplay when all you can throw is low punch/low kick and mid-punch/mid-kick. Half the normal attacks will miss against Roll and Viewtiful, and so will half of the character specials. Seriously, the small character shit needs to go.

They could have easily replaced Viewtiful with another Capcom legend from a different game. Like Dante from Devil May Cry; or Jill Valentine; Chris Redfield? Anyone? Anyways, THE SHORT CHARACTERS SUCK AND YOU WILL LEARN TO HATE THEM...[/new rant]

...

moving on... The game in america is going to be awesome with the exception that they are taking out Hakushon Daimao. WHICH MAKES ME SICK! Good god, take Roll out or Viewtiful Joe. Anyways... One loss for us, let's hope that we get five characters of pure awesome. I would kill to see more Tatsunoko legends; especially Speed Racer or Racer X. More Darkstalkers characters... Maybe throw in Forte and Zero, Ken, Akuma, Jill Valentine, Dante, or Sigma. We will have online play!

Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse (fan translated):
----

Yep, it's happened. The game has been fully translated into english. The patch however, is not available to the public right now. It will be available by August 31st, and I have already dove into the game, I got too anxious and I am currently stuck at the second save spot because I cannot read Kanji and do not know where to go. I do know that I am digging the graphics, the controls are great, the characters suck at running, which gives the game a good survival edge. You are attacked as soon as you get the camera. Having to figure the controls of the camera out because you cannot read Kanji = panic, and adds to the edge even more.

Though I refuse to play further than the first locked door because I am missing the story; :( I will wait for the patch to release on the 31st of August. Do not miss it!

i understand you. i've been a Nintendo fan (NOT FANBOY) for a while, and it's sad that real good games doesn't even come to America.

But as you said, there's hope, and a lot. Wii it's the most accesible next gen console (that's why everyone buy it, at least here in my country) and it has to delivred the good shit.

you just mentioned it and i really hope Wii delivers some really kick ass games by the end of the year ^^

First, Sin and Punishment 2 is the only thing i am currently really looking forward to. That and No More Heroes 2.

Secondly, Roll is the shit! Donät you dare rip on her!

People keep saying the wii is collecting dust. I never got that statement, because i find at least one game a month or so that interests me. God forbid I buy more then one game a month.

I just got Punch out for example, which is great. And i still have Little Kings Story from last month, and Pikmin 2 from the month before to finish. So content wise, the Wii does good.

Don't forget Ju-On, Cursed Mountain, and Fragile if you like the dark stuff. We're getting all those, too.

Not a bad read. What I really want to comment on is your sidebar. o.O That could be a blog in itself.

@ Kokoo Psy: Roll just doesn't belong in the game. She needs to go shove off into some TvC Pocket Fighter, this isn't Neogeo, this is Wii. She just seems out of place, and so does Viewtiful Joe. Seriously, the tiny midget characters should never mix with standard characters. Leave that stuff in WinMugen or Pocket Fighter-ish fighters.

@ Pedrova: Cursed Mountain doesn't look too good, but we'll see. Ju-on is just a Sim, and I have not heard of Fragile.

@ Tewdee: :P I guess so... good things or bad things?
