So I finally finished BioShock today, and while I was somewhat dreading the end due to the negative things I had heard about it, it wasn't that bad. It wasn't an amazing end, but it wasn't supposed to be. I got the feeling that the story was more along the lines of a book, with the rising action of uncovering the conflict between Atlas and Ryan, the climax of finding out... the major plot point, and then the denouement of coming to a conclusion thereafter.
The plot was written very well, and delivered even better, letting the player discover piece by piece what had happened and fit it all together for themselves, with well-placed (and extremely well-acted) revealing moments. All in all, I loved this game, and will be playing it through again as soon as I get everything of mine packed and moved.
I think you are right when you say the story is more along the lines of a book. I would have loved to have read this story as well as played it. But yeah, the ending left me ... wanting a bit more. Though I got the "bad" ending so maybe that's why.
