About Me
Sup D-toiders, Nick Moore is my name, video gaming is my... er, game. My console of choice is the Nintendo Wii, for I am as big of a Nintendo fanboy as you will ever find. Yea I like Nintendo, wanna fight about it? Anyway my favorite games include Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie, Paper Mario, and pretty much any Pokemon game, but my top picks gotta be Crystal and Emerald. I also love me some Super Smash Bros Series, LoZ:TP, Resident Evil 4, and pretty much all of the Fire Emblem games. Got me a Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Wii, and DS. Nice. I also like to game on the PC, my favorites including Fallout 3, Plants vs. Zombies, and Left 4 Dead.

Here's me in my natural habitat:

There's my Alienware m9750, love it. I'm pretty much on it 24/7, I do everything on it. But I get out, don't worry. See that tan? Yea you do. I hang with my friends most of the time I'm 'away from my computer', usually going to concerts, movies, or just partying.

I'm currently enrolled at The College of New Jersey (yea that's really the name) and my major is Interactive Multimedia, which is pretty much a revved up Gaming Major. Yup, one day I'll be a multi-million game designer, so you better not get on my bad side or you'll never get to experience the awesomeness of my video games... though I think I'm getting way ahead of myself.

Some of my other hobbies include movies, music, football (E-A-G-L-E-S Eagles!!!!) and literature. My favorite directors include The Coen Brothers, Guillermo del Toro, Tim Burton, and Quentin Tarantino. Favorite movies include Reservoir Dogs, Barton Fink, Edward Scissorhands, Fargo, Pulp Fiction, No Country for Old Men, and Pan's Labyrinth. My favorite bands are The Killers, Blink-182, Green Day, Weezer, and Queen.

So there you go, a little bit about me, your humble neighborhood Myrmidon16.

Great Band You Probably Don't Know Exists: Shinedown
Myrmidon16 | 9:24 PM on 07.29.2008 36 comments

I sure didn't. So one day I was watching Fuse and they had one of those countdowns for Rock music videos. If you like music and own Fuse you should watch it, I find many bands I didn't know exist on it, and sometimes they're pretty good. One of those bands is Shinedown. Now the first song of theirs I heard was the new single 'Devour'. I don't know if it was the sheer awesomeness of the song or the eerie Ozzy Osbourne lookalike lead singer, but I was hooked. So I, er, legally downloaded their discography and found out that some of their other songs aren't that bad either.

Now, as I listened to their albums, I found out that I actually was familiar with some of the songs but didn't know they were Shinedown's. Lets start with their debut album, Leave a Whisper. It's probably their weakest album. Now the song '45' is real good, but other than that its all pretty much the same. When I talk with some of my friends about this band, the term 'radio rock' comes up a lot. Now I'm not a huge fan of that term, but if you started listening to this band at their debut, you probably wrote them off as this 'radio rock', because that's what it sounds like. But wait! There's more! Stick with them!

Because in 2005 they came out with another album, having the same name as a certain psychedelic bands song from a certain multi-platinum album. (Don't know? Yea? Okay, I'll tell you.) Us and Them. And now your saying, "Mysterious stranger, if their first album was radio rock, what makes this one not?" Calm down, friend. The big difference is this album has three excellent songs on it; Heroes, Save Me, and I Dare You. Now it was weird cause when I first listened to this album I heard these songs and I recognized them, but I was like, "Wow, I didn't know these songs were sung by Shinedown." That and other quality songs makes this my favorite of their albums.

And last but not least is their recent album, The Sound of Madness. This album starts off with the still awesome 'Devour', which, if you don't know, is about the Iraqi War. Yea. This song is followed by other great songs, like 'Sound of Madness', 'The Crow and the Butterfly', and 'Sin With a Grin.' This is definitely a great album, and the lead signer is solid.

So there you are, a great band you probably didn't know existed. Or did. Whatever.

I had never heard of Shinedown until I turned on the radio and heard them three times in the span of twelve minutes.

Listen to Primus!

Shinedown is well known, and kind of sucks.

This isn't a music blog, but I wish there was one on the same level as Destructoid. I'm fucking sick of Pitchfork.

And, if you absolutely have to introduce a band, you should make sure no one has ever heard of it, and that it is in fact, good. No, it doesn't count if Rolling Stone likes it.

A good example:

Hey guys, go listen to Pinback.

Or Battles.

Or Japandi.

See? That is called doing it right. Or it would be, if this was a fucking music blog. Which it fucking isn't.

GAIZ THIS BLOG R GAME RELATED CUZ SHINEDOWN HAS SONGS IN TEH ROX BAND

i didn't know them but that's probably because they're not big enough to make it internationally yet. i did download both "Devour" and "Junkies for Fame" (new single) on rock band because they sounded awesome

i'll probably get some more shinedown through iTunes eventually.

also, people sure can b whiny bitches with the new guys. BlindsideDork can post youtube poop and call it a day without getting flamed but some new guy can't post a well written and fleshed out blog unless it's about games.

elitist bitches

Not to be a dick or anything, but I've seen Shinedown twice. They have been at a rock festival in KC two times in the past three years. I was listening to them when I was in eighth grade. My favorite song by them is "Fly From the Inside." I used to like Shinedown, but their last two albums disappointed me. Their best album by far is "Us and Them." They are an alright band, but definitely not one of the better modern rock bands out there.

Seriously, check out Muse, Nine Inch Nails, 10 Years, Ashes Divide, Alter Bridge, Black Light Burns, Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, and Hurt if you are into modern rock. Those bands blow Shinedown out of the water.

Wow, I put the wrong album. I think their best album is "Leave a Whisper," not "Us and Them."

Braulio09 has a good point here. There are PLENTY of non-gaming blogs with a video and two lines of text that get 20+ comments of "LOL" just about every day. At least you took the time and effort to think it through and articulate your point.

I never heard of Shinedown until that Rock Band DLC was announced, and I probably will never listen to them based on the comments here. Not really into emo.

Also, you're an Eagles fan? Nice. Are you from the Philly area?

You're brave for posting this. Honestly I think that band sounds no different than all of the other bands that constantly play on the radio. Which I try to stay away from at all times. But I'm glad you like them, as long as it makes you happy. :)
