This is copy pasta from a cblog I wrote about year ago. Since we're going to get a flood of fresh fish and cblogs titled Tales of Etrian Odyssey in the next few weeks, I thought it appropriate to repost now. You are all ambassadors to Destructoid for every single one of these new users. Act accordingly.

With the
God of War / PSTriple contest, there have been a ton of new users signing up for the site. Not only is this to be expected, this is certainly what Niero
wants. There's a ton of DToid lurkers out there who haven't taken the time to join up yet. This gives them a reason to, and as a result our community grows.
We're going to see increases in both win and suck. Sure, there's a lot of people who are just joining to enter the contest. They'll probably spam the community blogs for a while, then fade away once their chance to win is over. This will happen no matter how much we complain about it. Niero's on the ball.
[Make that CTZ now] I'm fairly certain he doesn't require sleep or know fear. The people who are blatantly blog spamming are going to get flagged, and they'll be taken care of internally. We'll also hopefully attract a lot of awesome users who will bring more awesome to the already awesome level of awesomeness.
We had a bit of a bitch fit about elitism on the forums a while back. Some users were starting to seriously rape the noobs, and as a result things were begining to go beyond friendly hazing and straight into pure asshattery. That's taking things a bit too far. Everyone new is going to take some lumps in good fun at first. But putting every new user in the same boat and attacking them on sight is going to make us look like a collection of pricks. When people are fucking up, we can offer constructive advice rather than "GTFO mah DTOID!!!" The good noobs are going to rise to the top over time. The bad ones will eventually go away on their own. Let's try to be a bit more open-minded about them, have fun, and show everyone why Destructoid is the greatest community out there.
A few other random thoughts:
- Community Blogs shouldn't have to be just about games all the time. Everyone here is connected by their love of
murder simulators, but that's not the only thing that defines us. For the most part, we're a group of friends who like to joke and fuck around with one another. Some of my favorite blog posts here have had absolutely nothing to do with games.
- By getting into
flame wars on sucky blogs, all you're doing is increasing the user's views and number of comments. Let's not add more fuel to the fail. Also, as far as the blog stats go... We're talking about imaginary internet points here.
ZOMG SERIOUS BUSINESS.
- Use your
friends list, and check out the last few archive pages on the
Community Blog section. There's going to be a
flood of crap blogs for a while. It's unavoidable. If you enjoy reading someone's work, it's easy enough to find.

I understand that some of you will complain about your stuff getting buried and what not, but usually the people that like to read every blog will know how to just auto bypass all the contest blogs and look for original blogs and what not. You're not going to lose blog views.
To all of you Monthly Musing writers, I will still see them. Don't worry about that. I see everything. Well, the only things I tend to miss are people that write shit (for example) yesterday and publish it live at some point the next day and not realize it's being published when that blog was originally started. Usually Ceark and the recappers do a fine job though of catching stuff like that so hopefully I am actually seeing everything.
I thout that the insane number of "Tales of Ertrian" blogs seemed over the top...I didn't even know htere was a contest..I wouldn't have joined it though...I'm convinced I was bamboozled in the GTA/PS3 one.***
***Not really, but I'm sort of a poor loser when giant prizes are on the line. Reguardless of how slight my chances were...

Well, i might not post a lot on my own cBlog but i do post on cblog of others a lot and i've been doing that from more than half a year and i'm also tired of the los of cBlogs that suck.
But i have to admit, the ones that go on the "Trash" section of the daily recap are funny just to see how much full of fail are hey made.
Good show, Mxy old chap. Couldn't have said it better. I had a friend of mine join the site and post a blog without my knowing, and she apparently got a harsh welcome. It totally soured her on the site, even when I tried to explain the "hazing process." It sickens me to see people behaving like we're part of an elitist clique. That's not the Dtoid I belong to, and I doubt that's the Dtoid that (most of) the staff belongs to. (Yes, I'm looking at you, Ron, you bastard. <3)
And a quick note: You link to the "friends' blogs" page in the post, but our "friends" page hasn't worked for months. Hamza, please, could you look into this? It's driving me so nuts.
Also, in case there are any newcomers reading this, here's a Pro-Tip: Ignore Reaprar.

For what it's worth, that's why I stopped hanging around IRC. I used to be one of several users with owner status in a "warez" channel and noticed that where things were all about having fun and good community spirit at one time, they gradually became about tenure and elitism and people being dicks to anyone new who came in for any given reason. People that I wouldn't even dream of giving an iota of respect to were acting like total fucknuts to people who were coming in and asking completely legitimate questions. Needless to say, I parted ways with them not so long ago and don't really feel like I'm missing anything.
I usually just skip over blogs that don't interest me anyway. I also check my friends blog list every other day or so in case I missed something. And of course, you don't have to worry about finding my blogs because I can never think of something to write about that someone else hasn't already written before me. I suck.
Beyond that, good show. And Bogus Journey might not be great, but the "Twenty Questions" bit on their way to hell is something that will always rock my face until I die.

I think part of the problem is that some people who post fail blogs are douches either trying to get attention or don't care or are 12 year old boys* However there are others who may not be as savy on the internet memes, or maybe their blogs are kind of fail, and they get the same "friendly welcome" and then they run away. I know its easy to do. But now that Ive actually MET some of the people on Destructoid, it puts things into perspective. I have a different attitude now that I can match an avatar with a face. Maybe people should have more of that kind of courtesy.

As a n00b myself I would like to express thanks for the sentiments expressed here by Mxyzptlk. I'm not here for a competition and was hoping to just settle in and get a feel for things but it seems that there are a lot of piranhas in the water and it's very off-putting to have to watch your back when you're the new guy or gal in town. I'm a bitch so I will always hit back, but judging from what I've seen a lot of other people might be frightened away from the community that might otherwise have turned out to be very worthwhile additions.
