About Me
Who am I? That's a good question. I'm a 26 year old gamer from Canada who's been playing video games for 22 years - I live and breathe games, and by extension, the industry. When I'm not gaming, reading about gaming or the industry, talking about games with friends or on forums or thinking about them, I enjoy reading, writing, sleeping, music, hockey, or hanging out with my girlfriend, though not necessarily in that order. I've recently finished my BA in linguistics, and I already have a half-BA in journalism that I'll probably never get done, considering I have enough experience to write news stories. Right now, I own a PS2, 360, gaming PC, DS, and PSP, and in the past, I have owned almost every console since the NES, at some point or another. I hope to expand to a PS3 as soon as I can.

I've actually written about the industry before, including an unsuccessful stint with RPGamer in my pre-university days. I was sadly forced to give it up because of a lack of time. I also wrote a gaming editorial column for my university paper, which my editor always wanted to make a "what's a cool game this week" column. Needless to say, they didn't renew me for another semester. Ah well.

I can usually be found playing RPGs or MMORPGs, though recently, I've started playing a lot of games from other genres, including some (incredibly unrealistic) racing games. Although I said I like hockey, I wouldn't be caught dead playing sports games; I just never really liked them.

I suppose if there's anything else you could possibly want to know about me, you can ask, though I can't imagine what you-

Oh, right, I forgot.

Cake or pie?

Definitely cake.

What does Lords of Shadow mean for Castlevania?
Musai | 7:08 AM on 06.04.2009 5 comments

One of the biggest announcements of E3 so far for me has to be Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, being worked on by Hideo Kojima, responsible for games like Snatcher, Policenauts, Zone of the Enders, oh yeah, and some Metal Gear thing. As far as I know, this is the first fantasy title Kojima has worked on, and well, regardless of the game's setting, Kojima definitely knows how to cut a trailer. The Lords of Shadow trailer (Which I won't bother reposting here, it's already available on the site) is easily the most awe-inspiring of the show so far. Awesome voice over? Check. Whips? Check. Werewolves? Double check. Cathedral window jumped through? Check so hard. But what does this mean for the storied franchise, one already reinvented several times in its nearly 25 year history? Well, all we have now is speculation. Voice talent like Patrick Stewart and Robert Carlyle replacing the awful voice actors we've had to endure in several Castlevania titles is most definitely a step in the right direction, as are the story elements that the voice overs in the trailer were hinting at. Its about time the characters have motivations and feelings other than “Let's whip and cut dudes, whipping and cutting is fun.”

Having played since its days on the NES, I've seen the series go through a number of changes. Is it time for a change now? I think so. Since Symphony of the Night, Castlevania fans have been subjected to Metroid-styled Castlevania games and lackluster 3D games, so I say it's time for a fresh start on both fronts. Even the trailer makes reference to this, with a cryptic “Reborn” appearing after '2010' near the end of the trailer.. W heather this rebirth is reflected in the Devil May Cry styled gameplay, the story, or something else altogether, I for one am remaining cautiously optimistic. As long as there aren't any stealth sections or lengthy codec calls, we should be good.

I really don't think it means anything for the series itself. Lords of Shadows was an original game announced last E3 but come this E3 Konami just slapped "Castlevania" on the name. Litterally, nothing changed. It was a gothic action game that had a main character who used a whip and cross. Sooooo Konami just did a cut paste job and we have a new castlevania game.

And remember last year when Iga announced a new 3D castlevania at TGS? (this) That for sure isn't Lords of Shadows, that is definitely Alucard. I'm pretty sure everyone has forgotten about this. If anything, Lords of Shadow might mean that game is canceled.

Perhaps. It's a bit soon to be able to tell, but I agree with your theory. I do think that Kojima being attached to this project may set the bar higher for newer games in the series, even if this game wasn't originally a Castlevania game.

Konami seem to value Kojima as their Miyamoto. If anyone can get the Castlevania series right in 3d, its Kojima. I just hope they bring back the rpg elements of the NES games.
