By now, most of if not all of you have heard of the Infinity Ward lack of dedicated servers in MW2 clusterfuck. Yes, that was a long ass sentence.
Anyway, this issue has actually got me to start writing a bit; though I'm not exactly going to win awards for "Most Free Time" nowadays. Getting a new job, (finally!) will do that to you. Anyway, IW's argument against dedicated server support is something along the lines of, and I'm paraphrasing heavily here: "Well, sever hosting is a bit too hard for some gamers...so we're going to make it easier and go for a console-style system for online play." Translation: "We can screw you out of more money by charging for content like new maps and modified gameplay that the community would make for free." That's pretty much what this boils down to when you burn the all of the corporate BS off the heap.
As a long time PC gamer, and someone who dabbles in FPSes; this is dirty, and low. The PC gaming model for multiplayer FPS has always been about user created maps and gameplay elements created by the community, seeking nothing for their work. While I wish I could explain this away, I can't. This isn't Valve-style corporate trolling, it's Activision style "let's screw the customer for everything they're worth"; a disturbing sales model called "Let's feed them bullshit and call it gourmet" Gamers live in a climate of what borders on corporate brainwashing, where we are taught that paying more for something somehow makes it of a higher quailty, that paying for downloadable content is somehow okay when mod-makers and mappers have been doing it for free ever since the first modded content.
Personally, I think onlime multiplayer has gone downhill since voice chat became standard, but maybe that's just me. But the next time I hear a 10 year old talk about how he's "fucking my mother"; I know I have someone to thank.
Thanks IW for lowing the bar just that much lower.
I'm not sure why they referred to a "console system". Most shooter games on the PS3 are hosted on dedicated servers... Resistance, Killzone2, MAG - most of the first party shooter games are on dedicated servers.
Dedicated servers won't die, ever. Never ever. They're a staple of online PC gaming. This is a financial cop-out by IW and nothing more. Fuckers forgot that the original Call of Duty's popularity grew from PC dedicated servers.
I used to play Medal of Honor: Allied Assault competitively, and the day CoD came out it was a mass exodus to the newer game. I can't believe they're dropping such a lively and passionate community.
Another heaping on the Activision hate machine. Too bad everyone will keep on throwing their money at the company until it becomes an even bigger beast than it already is.
@Elsa
That's just a few big shooters on the PS3. Most shooters are held through matchmaking. Heck, I think all shooters post-Gears of War 1 on the 360 are matchmaking.
Also, it isn't just the dedicated server issue: it's modding and customization. You can't get that on any console dedicated servers.
most shooters on consoles are held through matchmaking*.
Just thought of another point: the reason they refer to it as "console-ing" is because dedicated servers ship with 99% of all PC games, and nowadays, it's a rarity if console games get them: and even then, they're still gimped dedicated servers, as they lack true customization.
For instance, you can customize nearly every facet of World at War on PC with dedicated servers, and make 25v25 "all tank" games if you want. With console shooters like Halo 2, you're at the mercy of what the developers give you to work with, as opposed to the boundaries of your own imagination: Halo 3 broke that mold with Forge Mode, but it hasn't been replicated since, and still was basically "modding lite".
They sell more map packs this way. :|
the worst thing is that this means the pc version of the game wont last... everyone will say the console version is better because of this issue and then noone will support the game on the PC.
Is a stupid move, besides they want to charge 60usd for the game on STEAM which is stupid.
I wont support the developer here.
