A short blog about similar game play

Yesterday I watched a video review for Darksiders from IGN, the guy giving the review seemed like a moron to me. Rather than talk about good the game was or how it plays or how original it looks all he talked about was how much he felt it was like other games. Now the guy said that it was a lot like both God of War and the Legend of Zelda games. Now I have Darksiders and I'll admit that its got some characteristics of these games but why is that bad. Legend of Zelda and God of War are awesome games so if its like those isn't that a good thing. It just really gets to me when people complain about a game being similar to others. The way I see it is if someone did it once and they did it right then why "re-invent the wheel." I know how people are about wanting an original game and the games that are similar to others are still original in there own way. For me if a games tries to have too much going on and tries to be "too original" then a lot of times I don't play it for long.

Maybe its just me but I know it really gets on my nerves.

Totally agree with you... it melts my brain a little when reviews dismiss games based on their similarities to other games. Especially good ones!

I couldn't care either way. I just want the game to be fun. So I guess we're on the same boat.

I will say however when a game tries so hard to be original it breaks itself that doesn't mean it loses it's value. It's just not fun.

As far actual reviews that commit the crime of condemnation based purely on similarities that's always a tell-tale sign of review quality in my opinion. I don't mind alluding to it like, say, "If you played MW2 than you'll be familiar with Bad Company's feature X," but the game itself should still be reviewed on it's own legs.

It's God of War's combat meets Soul Reaver meets some Zelda (RPG) elements.

Aka it's good. I feel like these similarities SHOULD be mentioned. Gamers will instantly be able to relate to those big titles, and make a more informed purchase.

The key is that these similarities are GOOD.

Can comparing a game to Legend of Zelda and God of War actually be taken as a negative?? I would think that it would be considered a gift from God!

Actually how is Darksiders?? I've heard of the title but know exactly NOTHING about the game.

Exactly I feel that it too is a gift from the gaming gods but this guy on IGN and in fact a lot of other people say a game being similar to others is a bad thing. Like I said if someone did it once and did it right why do it again.

@CelicaCrazed I think its fucking amazing its got fun combat, puzzles, and gallons of blood
