Well I'm sure you all have seen or heard about the PS3's new product the PS Move. Well
Jim Sterling's earlier post inspired me to write about how things like this are just silly gimmicks that hold no real water over anything.
To further explain my case is the definition of a gimmick which is "a quirky feature that distinguishes a product or service without adding any obvious function or value. Thus, a gimmick sells solely on the basis of distinctiveness and may not appeal to the more savvy or shrewd customer." I happen to think that this thought fits nicely with the product simply because it is Sony's attempt to gather an audience that it believes the Wii has captivated with their own motion controls.
note: captivated audience
Well the reason why the motion control concept worked so well(with the exception of the mountains of shovelware) for the Wii is simply because that it was its sole mechanic for the console. When the Wii was first released it only offered you the wiimote motion controller which is also the primary tool in playing the games. The caused many developers to, whether from being forced to or simply from the artistic drive, make their games use motion sensory technology as a staple for the gameplay. The only thing that keeps this gimmick going is just because its the central point of the console itself.
The PS Move, on the other hand, due to it being revealed years after the PS3 release gives it a major faltering point: it is
optional. At best the PS Move is only going to bring minor gimmicky games to the PS3 library that will only really affect its boost in sales about as much as the PS Eyetoy had brought in the past.
In my opinion it is nothing revolutionary or game-changing for console competitiveness. Each console appeals to each of their own demographics and they have held onto them unwaveringly from the start and no silly peripheral is going to change that. You can't make families who play bowling games on the wii play bowling games on the PS3.
Also not to leave out Microsoft from this, I feel about the same way with Project Natal. I feel that its something derived from the use of a camera and taking it further. However it can only go so far to where it will hit the glass ceiling and just be an expensive piece of peripheral that only the most financially capable can have or just to sit there much like the Eyetoy did collecting dust on top of your television.
In the end gimmicks like the PS Move are just that, a quirky feature that distinguishes a product or service without adding any obvious function or value.
Regardless, it'll be interesting to see where all this goes.
But I LOVE them. Why?
They're artificially extending the lifespan of my current generation consoles. Instead of Microsoft giving up completely on the 360, and moving onto the next thing (like the Xbox 1), they'll spend all their time and resources trying to augment Natal into their CURRENT 360 models.
So I'll skip all the mini-game shovelware (that Sony ALREADY announced!!!), and keep playing my Lost Guardians, and Fallout New Vegases for a few more years.
Is it any wonder Sony is making us pay? Is it any wonder the XB360 camera isn't packed in? Is it any wonder consoles come with the console, a controller, and all other equipment costing pennies apiece? Even a packed in game is only a $1 investment for the console maker to press more discs. Adding a really funtional motion controller taht isn't al;ready the NORMAL controller is just out of the question.
That why PS4 and XB 720 are unlikely to include cameras, motion gadgets, and ostrich feathers for players to enjoy. It will all be back to square one because if you ain 't paying for it nobody else will. Call that being a gimmick, but the reality is this is just an economics reality at work.
Also, gimmick or not, Nintendo made a shitload of money on it, so I don't think they particularly care.
I also agree with Magnalon. Fine, there's a lot of shit on the Wii, and there soon will be on the PS3 and 360. But the stuff on the Wii that ISN'T shit is more amazing than anything I've played on the other consoles.
meh... I don't mind an exercise game once in awhile... or a party game when I have friends over. It won't replace the usual "gaming with a controller", but it does add a diversity to the console.
Well also when I meant that the PS Move was gimmicky not only applied to the consumer but I was also nudging at the developers as well. When I think of the Wii's heaviest hitters(in terms of games), I think of the old staples as always: Mario related games and of course Legend of Zelda TP. Other than them I have to sift through a lot of smaller companies who cranked out the damned shovelware(with the exception of gems like No More Heroes).
I feel that the PS Move will be very limited in its use(like other peripherals). Its a specialized device that is also VERY optional to both developers and consumers much like how the Eyetoy was in its time. I don't think I'll be seeing developers like Hideo Kojima eagerly cranking out the next Metal Gear game that uses the PS Move. I just see more and more shovelware and nothing groundbreaking. Thusly, is why I use the term gimmicky. Again I'm also referring this to Natal as well. I think its silly that both giants Sony and Microsoft are frantically trying to make an optional(if not expensive) mode of play to corner a market that Nintendo has forced itself into(because it is their primary tool).
