Rock Band: Undesireable side effects
Mr Dimples | 2:45 AM on 05.14.2008 15 comments

There is no doubt that Rock Band took the world by storm. If you read this and ask yourself just what exactly Rock Band is, then you're probably better off not reading it at all.

All video games have side effects to them and their strength vary depending on how impressionable the gamer is. This is sadly part of what's to blame when some loser gets an idea from a violent video game and decides to act on it, many times ruining people's lives in the process. But I believe I'm going off on a tangent.

When talking about Rock Band the side effects can be pretty predictable, I think. Some of them are good, like the fact that you are actually moving around, exercising. A gamer's life can be pretty inactive and a little exercise here and there is a good idea. Of course, some of the side effects can be bad and this is where the meat of my post is.

I am completely aware of the fact that one of the goals of Rock Band, if not the main goal is to make you feel like a rock star, I get that and I like it. What I don't get is why people seem to believe that just because they are able to play the guitar or the bass parts in the game that they can now almost magically be good at playing the real things. I see this time and time again. People tell me they are able to play the hardest songs at high difficulty levels and that they are awesome guitar players. I ask them if they are willing to prove it and after getting an affirmative answer I let them play my guitars. 100% of the people who have only played Rock Band are useless playing a real guitar at all. Did you notice something weird? I said nothing about the drums and that's because those are actually pretty faithful to what playing a real drumset is like. If you really want to feel like you're playing the real things, then play the drums with your friends.

If you play Rock Band and all you do is play the guitar or the bass parts, then you're dumb for missing out on the fun of playing the drums. On top of that, if you believe that you are now good at playing a real guitar because of Rock Band, then I don't want to run into you on the street and have you tell me all about it. You're wasting your time and what is infinitely worse, mine.

I'm sure I could get to be pretty decent on drums, but I don't see much point in playing Rock Band without friends and my friends enjoy playing drums. The only thing I find myself missing out on is being that guy who plays inherently social games by himself, which I think is gonna be alright.

The "fun" isn't playing the drums. It's playing the game with your friends.

I actually plan on looking into a drumset if I get good at them on expert level. So far, I'm doing pretty well on hard, so it could happen.

As for guitar and bass, the on thing it's good for is teaching separate hand coordination. Sure, you won't know a thing about strings, frets, and strumming, but at the very least, you'll be more used to the idea of your hands doing certain motions.

That must be annoying, im glad i dont know anyone so stupid. I normally feel motivated to learn songs for real if i enjoy playing them on guitar hero type games... of course theyre mostly far too hard for my meager skills, but theres the odd easy one (sunshine of your love, yeah!), and at least im trying.
And youre all jerks for having rockband. God damn it, why the fuck is it taking so long to go pal.

Yeah, people are idiots. I’ve been playing guitar for over six years, and playing the guitar in Guitar Hero or Rock Band is nothing like the real thing. I mean, it might improve your finger dexterity, but that’s about it.

Bah, I play Rock Band for the vocals, and you can't tell me that's not the real deal. Okay, it's pretty damn easy on the lower levels, but that's why I'm on Expert. :)

Who said that anyone gets better at playing guitar through Rock Band? Most of the top tiered player openly admit that they don't play guitar in real life.

Are you one of those play a real instrument people?

rock band is not w/o its merits, like samit said, it improves dexterity and stengthened my pinky, which did improve my guitar playing, but equating something with six strings and countless frets to something with a strum bar and colorful buttons is retarded.

You play real instruments, we get it. Let us less talented people have our fun, we're not hurting anyone.

I can only imagine that you hang out with severely mentally handicapped people if they suffer from the delusion that playing a fake guitar on expert would enable them to play an actual guitar.

That said, as an actual bass player I can tell you that it is much harder to play "Enter Sandman" on expert bass in Rock Band than it is to play the real thing.

I never said I played Rock Band by myself, that's just dumb. I actually consider myself kind of lucky because I can't really think of anyone that I play Rock Band with that doesn't play a real instrument. I used to have my own band so I know a lot of musicians. The really cool thing is that we can play the game and talk about the actual composition of the music, the notes, the tempo, all that good stuff. I just feel like I'm able to enjoy the music more because I can actually study it and not just listen to how cool it sounds.

Playing drums on Rock Band is totally unlike playing real drums. If you want to get some sort of useable experience, play drummania. The hi-hat is where the hi-hat on a real drumset actually is, as well as the symbal, and you have two toms rather than one. You can also play extra notes without being penalized, which is very nice. Because of this the patterns are harder and not as mind-numbingly repetetive.

There is no doubt that Rock Band took the world by storm.

There is no doubt that america alone is not entire world my friend. See there's this armpit of Earth called EUROPE and guess what? RB is not as popular as it's in the states...
Region free PS3 import costs ~400USD (USD vs. polish zloty exchange rate from 14.05.2008)

The true undesireable side effect of Rock Band is douchebags that can play real instruments spending WAY too much time trying to convince players of RB that people that play real instruments are better than them.

If I were to pat you on the head and say you're cooler than me, will you go play in the corner and not bother the adults for a while? We're busy having fun without you.

The only instruments that Rock Band actually helps you with ARE the drums. Keeping a beat, learning how to separate your right and left hands from your foot on different tempos is actually a useful thing. I've been able to sit down at a drumkit and basically play the drums to a given song after listening to it.

Guitar and bass "experts" are just retarded and everyone knows it. Rock Band and Guitar Hero capitalized very smartly on the "lazy untalented" market of people who don't play instruments at all but would rather pretend they do. There's nothing wrong with this until these people try to claim they're rock gods when they can't even play Michael Row The Boat Ashore or Kumbaya.

Even practicing singing in Rock band doesn't improve it if you suck to begin with :P
