I like to fap...a lot.

I have been on Destructoid for a little and have grown to really love it's community. I love to write articles on gaming and I find it easy to do with Destructoid. I am currently studying a Bachelor Degree of Communication (Journalism), so that one day I can hope to do this professionally.

While studying I jump from job to job like crazy because I don't want to do anything but write, and while that may sound reckless, I assure you that I really couldn't live any other way if I tried.

I just want to say thanks to everybody involved with Destructoid including every reader, community blogger and contributor. It really is an amazing place in the digital, shit infested swamp lands of the internet.

I am a proud member of the Refused Classification panel also consisting of Destructoid members Puppy Licks and DanMazkin, which brings to the plate a fortnightly Destructoid only podcast and soon to be video content which will also be featuring guest appearances from gaming celebs such as the Masterchief.

I also write on Stereotoid; a weekly shift in the Earth's crust where the greatest music from all time seeps forth and pushes its way into our ears then forces us to write about it through mental fuckism. If you understood that, then well done.

P.S - One day I will write for Destructoid...That's right Niero! I'M COMING FOR YOU MOTHER FUCKER!

Yahtzee sells out...WHY!?
Samuel Dillinger | 3:46 AM on 07.10.2008 38 comments

Before all you fan boys start lining up to hack me up with text, allow me to explain myself:

*sigh* Many fan boys and Nu-Metal lovers will be jerking off over how good it (IT, being the NEW Zero Punctuation) sounds and looks, however I for one am very pissed off. One of my favorite things about Yahtzee's works was having to work out the connection of between the game review and the choice of song. And I always thought that he was very clever in how he did it. I pissed myself laughing at the start of the Turok review when I heard the Jurassic Park theme come blearing out of my speakers, and he hadn't even started to review yet.

This seems to be the way of the world from what I have picked up from this and many other events such as what happened with such bands as Metallica, Pantera (who rectified their sell out fuck up by releasing The Great Southern Trendkill), Limp Bizkit and many other bands who sell out because the powers that be, tell them to:

Phase 1- An individual or group of individuals create something great

And so opens the a new chapter for man-kind. Something is created which many people start to enjoy and follow, creating a minority, a trend, a following and sometimes...an army. This is a short period of time, where the people who enjoy these workings think of them as their own private little finding and treasure because it is not mainstream and not every fuckwit is raving about it. This happened with Metallica before LOAD and 'The Black Album', Pantera before their singles Walk and This Love started to get played by every dickcheese under the sun and also Limp Bizkit pretty much before Significant Other hit the shelves and started to get played by every 13 year old in every street. I compare what is happening to Yahtzee to what happens to music because I see the exact same thing happening. When Yahtzee was first brought to my attention, it was just before the fuckwit collective that is The Escapist decided they wanted to cash in on his skills and in turn, give him cash. Fair go, I was happy for Yahtzee, just as long as they didn't fuck with his creativity to which I have an example of below:

One of the first reviews by Yahtzee before sellout collection day:

Phase 2 - Somebody or some people with cash decide to buy in with doller signs in eyes:

Blah, Blah, Blah...The Escapist watched Yahtzee's stuff, liked it, didn't want to rip it off because NOBODY EVER COULD, and decide they are going to buy in. Yahtzee accepts, as anybody who makes videos for Youtube and get paid nothing for, would. Good, I wanted him to be rewarded for his greatness, and so did many other people. It would also give him great exposer which is great. Nothing changed so far...

The SS Sellout Boat I didn't understand until the most recent clip was brought out:

Phase 3 - The guys with cash tell the creative minds how to run things:

Welcome to the stage where everything turns to shit and fans get pissed off and fanboys follow along sucking the dicks of the creators as well as themselves...I don't have the time nor the patience to right about how much this pisses me off, so I will just show you this and you can decide:

What Yahtzee will be like in another years time (without the jokes):

I dare not put the new video of Yahtzee in here, I already have enough videos and if anybody cares about what I am writing about then they would have already seen it. I know there is nothing I can do about it, and I know I sound like a fucking cry baby, so spare me the moronical comments people.

But the fact of the matter is, that this doesnt just happen on the internet, it happens everywhere and its fucken pathetic. Im done. Fuck you all.

Much love & respect (obviously)
Moses

I watched the new Zero Punctuation video and thought the same thing! I don't think I was quite as disappointed as you, seeing as it was still funny, but I'm afraid of when it ends up being just the same stuff, wednesday after wednesday.

You sure this is a result of people with the money stifling creativity? Or you sure it's not that Yahtzee has only so much that he can yell about week after week after week. Yeah, he's funny, but it clearly gets old for some people faster than others. If you don't like it, don't watch it. But I find nothing 'less' funny about this week's than last week's. The brutally honest truth about how much fun a game provides, with a liberal sprinkling of humor at a speed usually reserved for race horses on amphetamines.

Yeah, when I watched my weekly dose of ZP this week... it just wasn't the same.

METAL!

I still enjoy watching ZeroPunctuation, but the new opening and ending are bad, like really, really bad. Also I hate it, when he talks for 5 minutes how everybody is a fucking idiot, that actually plays the game and in the end he says, that he really enjoyed it. What's up with that?

Also nice write up.

If the guy is having a dry patch then so be it, i mean pumping out reviews (albeit reliable/humorous ones) on a weekly basis os no mean feat. I reckon the guy will get over this slump and return his glorydays real soon.

And i wouldn't agree entirely with the whole 'sell-out' thing altogether. I mean he, like most people are working online specifically to make his living off it. I think for the great stuff the guy has already put out there that he is well entitled to make some money off the back of it.

Shit if we were so uppity about this whole selling out business, why would we watch actors, musicians or sports stars. They sure as shit aren't doing it for the 'love'.

I think its ok in all honesty, fair enough could obviously be better, but its an improvement on the text and music intro. I think it just needs the music you were ranting on and on about overlapped over that new intro.

I don't think it's selling out necessarily. You also have to realize that now that he's more famous, he has to be careful about the copyright issues associated with the songs he uses.

Please stop. I came here to see if you would make a valid point, but all I see a poorly executed rant that I could have read just as easily by spending 5 minutes searching the Escapists forums. While I appreciate your endeavor to speed up this process for me, it makes me wince to know that whatever I say to attempt to stem your inaccuracies and flailing accusations will be met with the equally flailing accusation that I'm a fanboy.

I will miss the intro and outro music, and personally I'm disappointed with the decision but if Yahtzee has taught me anything, it's that wailing about these kind of things makes you look like even more of an e-peasant than the faceless followers who defend his every action. But I'll say the same thing to you that I have deliberately avoided saying to all the people who troll the ZP message board threads; simply put, ZP is meant to be entertaining, nothing more or less, just that, and if you're going to get your panties in a bunch over it, then you're just ruining perfectly good underwear.

Oh come on man ... I read this entire post looking for your argument and then I ended up not finding one. Be more specific about exactly what you don't like about Yahtzee's latest videos. You can't simply say he's selling out because he's getting paid now. I understand that there's more to your argument then just this one point, but it's not in this blog. Where is it?

A point. It has none.

Are you complaining about the music? He probably didn't want to get the shit sued out of him for using unlicensed music now his is so popular.

The content? Doesn't seem to have changed much to me...

Your problem is that Yahtzee gets his rocks off people hating on him. What's the point in being popular if no-one hates you? I wouldn't be surprised if he made the decision to change the opening and ending music just to piss off the fans.

Yeah. Pantera sold out. On an album with "Fucking Hostile" on it. And Far Beyond Driven was a sell-out album because it went #1.

And you're saying Limp Bizkit sold out with Significant Other? As opposed to the stunt where their record company got a radio station to play Counterfeit all day?

And Metallica, arguably the most powerful metal band of it's day, just up and decided to start listening to the record company exec's and changing their style before releasing the Black Album?

You're a fucking idiot.

This isn't selling out, this is a simple matter of "hey, I like making these, please don't sue me for using your song without permission." The reviews are still funny and we get to see more of them, so I'm happy. Don't act like he's jumped the shark or something.

despite the fact that you used the phrase "xx has sold out", I still read gave you the benefit of the doubt and read your article.

It was mostly a pointless rant that I wasn't going to bother commenting on until I got to this last paragraph.

You "DO" realize that nothing makes you sound like a bigger, more loudmouthed idiot then this juvenile bullshit right? This "Yeah, fuck you guys! Look how hardcore I am that I don't give a shit what your response is" type attitude. If you didn't give a shit what peoples response is, then why did you write this in a more or less public forum?

You noticed the bit at the end that says that we're all viewing this as his "jump the shark" moment? Nope, 'course you didn't.

You've fallen into the trap that impressionable kids plunge headfirst into at the slightest sign of change. You noticed how the music is credited to Ian Dorsch? How d'you know that's not one of Yahtzee's mates or a fan that's letting him use the music? You don't. All you do is cry sell-out at the slightest aesthetic change. One day you'll realise your mistake and that'll be the day that you move out of your parent's house and realise that people have to do things they don't enjoy, purely for money. It's called having a job.

I too hate the new title music but not because I think he's selling out, I just don't like it.

I wonder how many people actually bothered to check out his website where he states his reasons for changing to title music before they started posting.

turns out its just about the intro/outro-music? how about trying to look a bit more professional? or supporting the hand that feeds him?

Did you even look into as why he stopped using other people's music under Fair Use? ZP was getting to big and was drawing attention from the people who owned the music. They most likely did this to avoid lawsuits. Sure the intro/outro music is terrible. If you really cared about not selling you shouldve stopped watching ZP the day it went to the escapist and you wouldnt be bitching about Yahtzee right now.

I hate the new intro but come on it's far too early to say this will have any effect on Yahtzee/Zero Punctuation. Besides everyone needs to pay the bills and afford to buy food you know.

I fucking love Wayne's World though and that sellout scene is pure genius!!!

Listen, Yahtzee stated at the end of his last video that he didnt want to use copyrighted music anymore. He credited the music at the end of every clip, and The Escapist are getting good money out of his work.

They should at least go to the effort of making sure that he can still make his work like he always has, at least TRY to get the green light to use selected music.

My blog here is an act of dissapointment, not hate. I love his work, I hate what The Escapist is doing to it.

That simple.

Man licensing songs, especially very famous ones is an expensive process.

The Escapist are just a website, not a TV station, so they decided it would be better to make a music intro for Yahtzee rather than pay over and over again for songs that he wants to use.

He didn't sell out, he just doesnt wanna get sued. Although I do dislike the barrage of ads that is now at the end of his new videos. Ya should have focused on that point instead methinks :P

Read his site before you start crying:

"Extreme paranoia concerning copyright infringement may also have played a part and I wanted to err on the side of caution." You know how the music companies try and charge people tens of thousands of dollars for sharing music? How much do you think they charge when people want to license it? I'm going to guess quiet a lot of money.

Seriously, you keep spewing bullshit about how The escapist is fucking with his work, how are they doing this? When are you going to actually come up with some tangible points to support this theory?

Jesus, try engaging your brain before your mouth.
