Gamefly Sucks
MotoRobo | 12:05 AM on 01.16.2009 16 comments

[update] (I'm wearing a dunce cap) I overlooked the cost of games compared to movies in my analysis. The higher cost for Gamefly's service is justified. The games lower on my list were padding. I've gutted it to wait a bit longer to get better games. I rescind my conclusion for the trial of this method. Gratzi vatos. [end update]

I wanted to try-out Gamefly and, per my request, got 3 months w/it por navidad. I'm grateful for that. I think of myself as a cynic but I'm still too optimistic b/c this service has surprised me w/how far it falls beneath my expectations.

Expectations

Netflix for games. Tempered by the understanding folks would keep a game longer than a movie.

Problems

1)Price.
..................Monthly Payment|Products Out
Netflix..................$9..........................1
...........................$14........................2
Gamefly...............$16........................1
...........................$23........................2
an' I quit Netflix back when you got 3 for 'bout $20 monthly. I realized I could see movies online for less but a computer can't play every game.

2)Availability.
I expected this problem but not to the degree it has expressed. The game I'm sent is usually more than 1/2 way down my list and past multiple "high" availability games. W/Netflix I remember high was practically a guarantee of selection while gamefly's 75%+ explanation is proven a lie.

Conclusion

Don't get Gamefly. Just buy games, rent 'em, borrow, or get 'em used.

Plus the netflix argument is strengthened by the 360 compatibility.

I never wanted ot try any of the services. It just seems like a waste of money.

The problem with gamefly is that games last longer than a movie which means that the rentals will be out longer than a movie rental. Gamefly is only ideal to rent older games but by the time the older games are available you can buy it for about half price if you're a smart shopper.

I use gamefly to play games that I know were most likely good, but didn't really justify a purchase. Once they opened a warehouse in Texas, it's been awesome for me.

GameFly is only a few years old, and they're still opening office all over the country. They only have 4 right now. Paying $16 a month to play two or three games is a hell of a lot better than paying $180 for those same three games.

Or you could just not play all the games you want to :/

Gamefly takes its sweet time, but if it's a game I don't need to play right away, I find it useful. I don't use it for games I'm reviewing, I'll either get those from a publisher or buy them from a store, but for titles I never had to review and don't mind waiting for, I'm finding Gamefly very useful.

The only reason to get Gamefly is if there is a backlog of games you want to play and don't want to buy them all. The price of gamefly is higher than netflix cause the price of games are higher than movies.

Complain about Gamefly cause they never give you new releases.

I quit gamefly because it took them 2 weeks to ship me a new game. FUCK THAT

What Mr. Sterling said. Plus they have a warehouse an hour away from me so that rocks.

I still prefer the wait until everything is $20-30 approach rather than renting. I like to collect my games.

Yeah, Gamefly has a center in my town. So the shipping only takes a day after I get the confirmation email.

Fine for me. Not very quick, but I don't use it for the speed. Now that I've gone through most of my available now's on my list, I'm getting more High to Mid Availabilities at the top of my list.

Plus, they are shipping out a higher price item than a DVD. I dunno, it seems like apples and oranges comparing Netflx and GameFly . . .

I love netflix; I'm not into the legal downloading/streaming services, and I'm not a fan of watching movies on computer monitors.

$16 a month seems a little step for only 1 game out at a time. I could never think of a use for gamefly so I've never dropped cash on a subscription.

I've spent enough time with Gamefly that I've figured them out. Yes, they can take their sweet time with games, but if you want to clinch a new title for yourself, here's what you do: Have nothing else in your queue but the new game BEFORE it's released and have all your games returned. When the game comes out, you'll get it within one or two days of it's release. Yeah, the price is a bit steep, but it's a whole lot better than $10 PER GAME at Blockbuster. That's just bullshit. Also, that means I have to GO there. Gamefly is good, despite it's faults.

Also, Gamefly's used game prices are AWESOME.

I just signed up for it last month and I'm finding it well worth the money. I only have one game out at a time, but I figure that $16 a month would translate to buying a game every three months. Since I'm dying to play about 6 games that have come out within the last three months (plus skate 2 and LOTR next month) it makes a lot of sense, especially on really short but fun games like Force Unleashed.

Is it annoying that the game takes about a week to a week and a half to get here? Of course. But I've already played and returned two games in 6 weeks. The way I see it, I've spent $32 instead of $120.
