Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

Morrius is a valued member of this community which in return alot of people respect his opinion, and vice versa.
You sir, are just a troll.

Groups of sentences and groups of women have a lot in common. They frequently have periods.
@Jack
Don't brag. You're getting comments from multiple people telling you you're wrong. If I were alone in my actions, I'd be trolling, but I'm not.
So I'll pos the argument here.
Jack,
Why does an non-original IP siginify a lack of originality. I agree that it many cases this is what occurs when a character is used and abused but not always and especially not with Nintendo. Let's look past Nintendo though at other IPs that get used over and over. Tomb Raider is a great example of an IP that lacked originality in its sequeals, then the latest iteration comes out redefines how the game is played and you've got a non-original IP that is still original.
I would argue that Nintendo does this with all their core franchises, especially Mario, whose games vary so much it they would be counted as completely different if there didn't happen to be a little red plumber in all of them. It's game design that creates originality not who is in it. As has been argued before in some of the other posts, using an IP just helps sales and if Nintendo is designing original games that are fun to play who cares what IP they are under, the orginality is still there.
I would say that Sony and MS also do this with their core franchises too. You aren't rehashing an IP unless you aren't challenging the game that came before it. Let's look at all the "original IPs" out there that are just Grand Theft Auot copy cats. Are those games better simply because they don't have the same characters?
As far as Nintendo no putting out any more original IPs I thin it's been argued they have been, but Pikimin is a great example of an amazing new IP they made. As for coming out on the Wii you have a whole host of original IPs coming out from third parties because they're being forced to design different and new games around the Wii. I'll post a list of these once you respond with "oh yea what original IPs?" but I've got to get back to work.
thanks for the upgrade. Though now I really wish I had written it better.
Im sorry that I offended you. I owe my life to you. My arrogance and grammer is horrible. To do suck a crime against a god like yourself demands punishment. I am a troll, that is a product of his environment. My actions are disgracfull and ignorant. The internet is a place of innocence and I should have known that. Please take this apology with a big fuck you.
You said it perfectly
All kidding and flame wars aside I'd really like to hear your thoughts on the subject of originals IPs and the argumetns I stated. Do you feel that an original IP is better than an original game under and old IP? Do you not think Nintnedo is changing it up enough with their IPs?
@slorojo
Your avatar is fucking hypnotizing. I can't look away.
I think a new IP is always better. It brings fresh character into the mix and new story. Wouldn't it suck o have Mario in Bioshock? Or Zelda in Oblivion?...Oh nevermind Zelda in Oblivion would be awsome. Anyways, Nintendo is doing good with Mario "platform genre" and Zelda. All the stupid sport knockoffs and minigames really drag Mario into the ground.
And instead of shooting bees out of your hands, you could shoot flying koopas! Although Bowser does have almost the perfect build for a Big Daddy...
In respect to the new point of this blog post:
Sometimes I think the term original IP can be confused with the concept of originality altogether. Franchises, and to a lesser extent sequels, can still exhibit more originality than a new IP.
I would argue that something like Mario Galaxy, for all the aspects that -have- been done to death, still shows a great flair of originality in the level design concept. The same can be said for many aspects of Resident Evil 4, The great Mario @ Luigi DS rpg, and so on. All of these games offer some aspect of originality, whether it be gameplay, storytelling techniques or similar. For all the unoriginal aspects of these titles, you still get to see and do things you haven't experienced many times before.
On the flipside, you can take an original IP like, lets say, Jade Empire. A good game, no doubt, but aside from the combat, is lacking in striking originality due to how very derivative it is of other games, most notably KOTOR. To further elaborate on my point, KOTOR itself introduced some very original ideas at the time, and yet was an entry into one of the most lucrative franchises on the planet.
