About

About time I updated this freaking thing!

For those who already know me, I am Monodi. Those who doesn't, well, I am Monodi.

I got such a growing passion of gaming through the years and now I am currently in college starting my courses of Game Design as well!

I consider myself a Nintendo fanboy from all my life, but I have been much more in contact with titles for PC recently. Not that I am abandoning one, but I think it pretty much could cover the best the industry has to offer.

I am up for the philosophy that gameplay is more important than graphics, but I think graphics and technology are also a crucial part of the industry and experience even.

Games I love and recommend in no particular order

Rhythm Heaven (DS)
Half-Life 2 (PC/XBOX)
Team Fortress 2(PC)
Drill Dozer (GBA)
F-Zero GX (GameCube)

Excuse me, come again? I was leveling up my Tauros.

Oh, what?

Why am I playing a game for kids? I am sorry, no, this is a game for me too. Yeah I am sure of that, it says that on the rating. E for Everyone. That means kids, adults, babies, old men, middle aged people, girls, boys, asians, caucasians, black, brown, albino, short, tall, wide, slim, human, dog, cat, hamster, platypus, pygmy hippo, earthling, martian, cthulhu, demon, archangel, omnipotent, vegetate, mammal, reptile, bird, amphibian, fish, crustacean, matter and antimatter.

Some notes on it are suggested for some audiences but yeah, it is a game for me too. In fact, it was previously known as "Kids to Adults" in the 90s.

What do you mean that it doesn't matter? Why would it matter anyway?

That I should be playing Mature rated games? Why yes I do love me my M-rated shooters. I am a junk for Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead sometimes. I also liked Perfect Dark, Doom and Serious Sam HD. I recently got a copy of Resident Evil 4 for Wii, and it is pretty suave as well. I cannot believe I am 5 years late to the party.

What about Gears of War? Two things, I do not have an XBOX360, and not care that much. Why? I dunno, really not my style. I have read great things about it and I should check it out, but it is not accessible for me at the moment.

Oh what now. MadWorld? Why should I get it? I am not saying this game sucks either, I just don't care so much about when violence is driven in such a mindless way.

... weren't you just arguing about how the ESRB doesn't matter a second ago?

What do YOU imply in a Mature rated game? I am 19 years old and I can walk away of GameStop without feeling guilt or asking my mother to show her ID. But I just do not play them as much in comparison.

E-rated games usually present a wider selection of gameplay, art styles and have quite some legacy. I like to invite other people to play those as you just did. Except without certain age restrictions. My kid cousins are getting to know The Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong Country like that. If they like them they can get the bonus benefit of not going through too much trouble to get it. Their time to play them will eventually come as well, so I will wait.

Wait, I see it coming. You will say that I also love Littlest Pet Shop because it is rated E for Everyone too, right? No. Just like I am not into your ultra-violent games, I am not into this diabetic crap. And as I previously mentioned there are cases a demographic is planned for. And I, as a testosterone producing male of 19 years old, I am not interested in Littlest Pet Shop.

What does MATURE mean for you? Is implying that my preferences should be judged by stereotype and social pressure instead of personal choice mature to you? Yeah, I think those games you mention are not rated for you, sir.

Peace.

I don't think there's anything wrong with incredibly violent games, but there isn't much wrong either with rated E games. I'll take colorful and fun games over any "realistic" shooters any day.

But I do enjoy a cleverly splattered blood fest once in a while, I'm sure you'd love Mad World.
I'm just gonna haul off and punch the next person to criticize my Pokemaun playing in the throat. THAT'LL SHOW THEM TO BE INTOLERANT
BUT THE GUNS SHOOT BULLETS AND EXPLOSIONS AND THE SOUNDTRACK IS LIKE A TOUCHDOWN ON THE PEAK OF A MOUNTAIN THAT'S ON A PLANET MADE OF TITS.

ALSO, IVE NEVER BEEN HUGGED.
I only had to ask for ID once in my life, because I was sixteen, three days from my birthday, and bought Left 4 Dead.

Then it went on sale for 37.50 just 5 days later.

Anyway, hell yes for pokemans, I need to battle you with my expert team of win.

P.S. Soul Silver ftw.
You play Pokemon but not Gears Of War? Clearly your in the bufferzone between totally immature 13 year olds and totally righteous mid to late 20 year olds like myself. Your gay aren't you. Now wait, you still live in mommy and daddys house right? LOSER. *shows off his studly man muscles*

Seriously though I used to make fun of my brother for playing the card game and watching the TV show. The he just outgrew it. The fact that people still play it boggles my mind but hey live and let live. If a person finds enjoyment in something I percieve to be kiddie then so be it.
@Occams electric toothbrush

Now THAT is when an M-rated game is amazing.

And guys, I know I SHOULD play it, I just haven't that's it.
A-fucking-men, brother. Thank you for writing this.

It gives me a little hope that there are other older, mature (age-wise) gamers who understand the simple concept of what "Everyone" actually means.

Now if you'll excuse me, my 25-year-old self will go back to feverishly anticipating Donkey Kong Country Returns and Kirby's Epic Yarn more than any other game else for the rest of the year.
Yo, let the haters hate. In the meantime, I have to get my Scyther ready for the Elite Four and get this Duskull to level 37 so he can evolve and I can trade up with Antwhan to get him to his final evolutionary level.
You don't outgrow Pokémon you just outgrow the will to live ^^
pokemon is the shit the best rpg seris to date
Man, I have GOT to get SoulSilver! My buddy gave me his Platinum after he got HeartGold. I'm enjoying it, but only because this is my first Pokemon since Gold. I'm not of fan of these here new-fangled Pokemon. I'm going to get SoulSilver and LeafGreen and I'll be set. I won't even need Black or White.

Also, great read Monodi. Some people just don't understand...
Very smart writing. I'd be glad to battle/trade with you one of these days.

Ironically, I had a little girl tell me at work the other day that I was too old to have a DSi.

I'm 21.

*goes back to leveling his Numel*
pokemon has always been a great franchise. just because they market to a younger crowd does not mean older gamers cant play them! i would play them if i had the right hardware for it. but bloodshed in games is a nice thing too. helps me get through the work life without chopping a head or two off! :)
Just saying this is not only about Pokemon
I do believe E or T games are better. Not a fan of shooters, really.
I could probably give you a run for your money with my team, though I haven't played in months.

I don't know, I generally don't look at rating labels when I buy things. I've enjoyed games from all of the available selections, barring eC because...uh, I've actually not seen one for sale. The intro to this is roughly all that needed to be said. But yeah, I'm gonna play something regardless of the suggested age range or even its content, if I enjoy the game.

I remember when HGSS was announced, people were going on about how they were going to lie about a supposed gift, or have a younger sibling buy the game for them. Come on, what's with that? A perfectly rational 24-year old walked into Gamestop one early morning to claim his preorder and wasn't harassed about the game in question one bit. I wasn't even told I was better off buying this or anything.
When Platinum edition came out, the tournaments I went to seemed to have an older crowd than ever before. With every year that passes, the kids stop showing up to the tourneys and it's all 18-25ers.

It's cool to have real EV/IV trained competition now. I always felt bad for winning vs a little kid who just wanted to show off their one special legendary they had. I had to start making teams of first stage evolutions so they'd have fun too. ; )
Nice blog and I agree. I was playing Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance the other day and my dad comes in and says "This looks like it's for kids" and I point out it's a 7+ game to which he retorts "Exactly." It was like "Yo dad, it's seven PLUS. That means even YOU could play it and enjoy it." A similar article could be written about films with 'U' ratings and stuff.
The rating system is an indicator of content, not quality or challenge.

I've played plenty of M-rated shooters or button-mashing hack-n-slashers that are waaaay easier than SMG2, not nearly as epic as LoZ:WW, and (to your point) not as engrossing and intricate as the world of Pocket Monsters.

This issue transcends games into other media. The best reviewed, most cash-money movie this summer is a G-rated flick from Disney/Pixar about the contents of a toybox. Out of all the movies I anticipated this year, it was the only one to incite any real emotion in me as well.

Buying games based on their rating is like buying sneakers based on what your friends wear - its like, totally grade-school.
Makes sense. I got tired after playing two generations of pokemon, though.

A bunch of young college girls pointed and laughed when I was using my iPod to surf the web and listening to music. They thought I was playing games. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Why can't we have a culture like Japan, where people play Dragon Quest on a mothafukin boat (or at least on the subway)? Jerky jerks.
Next time offer the young college girls some money. They will stop mocking you and flash their boobs and also make out with each other.

I've heard.
I guess I'm missing the point here.
Nicely said. I do tend towards M rated games myself... but that's only because FPS shooter games tend to be rated as such. :(
