You can also use Fire Pro Wrestling Returns as an example of this, a lot of people can't get past the graphics since they're 2D sprite based characters so they miss out on the gameplay which is far and away the best we've ever had outside of Japan in a wrestling game. It's far better than the Smackdown series, that's for sure. The only wrestling games that come close are the AKI titles on the N64 (World Tour, Revenge, WM2K, No Mercy) and they haven't made a actual wrestling title since No Mercy, unless you count the first Def Jam game which was more skewed toward fighting with heavy wrestling influences.
So, yeah, I definitely agree with you in a lot of ways. Especially the Sonic reference. The best Sonic games since the Genesis days (not counting Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Spinball, etc.) were on the GBA, which is pretty sad. I wasn't a huge fan of the Dreamcast ones, and the ones after that are just disgraces.
I don't know, since I like them both. I prefer some games like Sonic in their 2D form, but others like Mario turned out pretty good, methinks.
2D games are great for people like my wife, who doesn't like to navigate around a 3D world (in games, of course). Going from left to right makes gaming a bit simpler, that's for sure.
I couldn't agree more. Certain game franchises simply can't be converted to 3-D without losing something, just look at the Mega Man X series.
I prefer 2d for some games, like fighting games. I'm not a huge fan of 3d fighters. But I think action/adventure games have benefited from going 3D. There's just so much more you can do with a 3D world than a 2D.
Metroid: I can take it both ways. I loved it in 2D and I really enjoyed it when it made the jump to 3D.
I'm torn between both.

Wow, formatting totally spoiled that last bit of the joke. Fail.
Sonic could work very well in 3D.
Unfortunately Sega still hasn't realize that Sonic Team sucks. They need better programmers and a better quality assurance.
Some games have made successful jumps to 3D like Mario or Metroid but some games must remain 2D in my opinion like King Of Fighters. I hated the Maximum Impact games, something about them just felt off. I hope SnK-Playmore don't decide to butcher The Last Blade with a 3D sequel.
I Agree With you Alot of 3d games have horrible game play, and Story lines that suck just as bad.. It makes you think where the good games went too..
I love some 2d games, but games like pyschonauts, or even rayman 2/3 would not be the same in 2d.
Not that I don't like Prime but I still prefer my Metroid 2D. ;)
