About Me
INTERVIEWER
Did you have much encouragement in writing, and if so, by whom?

MONKEY
Good Lord! I wish there was a funny story for this, something evoking Truman Capote, to tell you about my early writing. Sadly, I came only lately into writing and would likely be better known for drawing if there was any fairness in the world. I can very honestly say I never wrote a grammatical sentence, of more then six words, until I was twenty. Well, at least anything set to paper of on the first attempt. I am creative, but I've lacked the careful architect tools of a real writer who can build something great. I have the mind of a lunatic and that helps make for interesting ideas, but nearly ninety-nine percent of my writing process is correction and re-writing. Maybe, knowing enough to re-writing makes me a real writer, but it sure seems like more work when the whole process seems like carving toothpicks out of whole trees. The first story I ever wrote was in second grade about a one eyed monster that was cruel only because he needed eye-drops. My 2nd grade teacher's assistant thought it was very creative, and the was my first moment of pride in anything I wrote.

INTERVIEWER
Why should people read what you write here?

MONKEY
Facts are written by and for the sissy! Here in my blog, I deal in truth and leave factual reporting to the experts. I might not always spell all the words correctly and I cannot vouch for my mastery of the rules of grammar; However, I do try to say interesting things and I try to make it fun. That's my only promise: what you find here will be as fun, funny or irritatingly interesting. If you don't agree I give you back twice what you paid me to read it..

Mr Cranky Pants Post: Modern Warfare 2 Firings

I'll admit it, I'm confused.

Three months ago while talking about Modern Warfare 2 by Infinity Ward most people were saying things like, "...the multi player is a bit unbalanced even today, but it sure is fun" or "...the single player campaign was a bit vapid, the dialogue jingoistic, and it was too damn short." Then two weeks ago happened and somehow Modern Warfare 2 is the greatest game ever made and some sort of technical achievement. It sold a lot of units folks, but that really is the technical achievement of the game. Realiosticly speaking MW2 was over rated and over hyped, not a crime against a very good game, but when you then add this looking backwards navel gazing it blows two men being fired out of proportion.

The attitude today on the net is the creative directors were fired and somehow that equates to Activison to painting over the ceiling of the Sisten Chapel. Sorry, but while all this legal wrangling is sad, Activison hasn't really damaged something irreplaceable here. Jason West and Vince Zampella were hardworking folks and compelling leaders by all accounts, but they were not exactly what I would term creative geniuses. They certainly hadn't perfected the FPS shooter genre in terms of pacing, story, or game logic.

The big thing people seem to be confusing is making money and skill. You can be averagely skillful and still be famous and rich. And that seems to be the case here. They were 'as skillful' as their peers, but because they just sold a lot of games that somehow elevated them in some people's eyes to being 'more skillful' then their peers. Being responsible for a successful( while not perfect game) has somehow made them 'irrepalace assest' to a franchise because peopel have a Robin Hood complex about two dude. Yeah, sorry, that still just confuses me. It is like saying Chef Boyardee is a master of Italian cuisine. Selling a lot of something canned for consumption isn't laudable, be that mushy pasta or online game play it is still not something to heap accolades.

Just imagine if West and Zampella had not been fired publicly and very uncivilly. I think when they next game came out most people would have said, "Gee I hope they fix some of the problems in the past two games....those games could have used more polish and been less vapid." Instead, I think when the remaining people at IW putting out then next game will be blamed for not reaching so mythical perfection that not even Jason and Vince ever reached.

I would agree that skill isn't so much an issue... if COD:World at War had been better. Treyarch and Infinity Ward must have had a similar level of financial and technical support from Activision... yet the Modern Warfare games were light years ahead of Treyarch's efforts.

The thing is... these two were fired "with cause". There was a corporate reason for their termination, it wasn't a whimsical decision on Activision's part. Chances are that these two were unhappy and leaving anyway - Activisions actions simply ensure that they don't take a wadful of cash when they leave and make it more difficult for them to recruit and take people from their dev team.

To be honest, I hope they do get other jobs and make other games. The COD series is now an unjustified cash cow. Modern Warfare was a great game. MW2 was a solid follow up with more of the same. If Activision had their way, I'm sure it would be more of the same. If IW had their way it could be something completely different. As a gamer I hope that the Modern Warfare series retains the technical skill they've show with maybe some plots that make sense, and maybe the ex-employees will get jobs where we as gamers might get some new games, some new ideas.

Meh... to me it's just not really that big a deal. People get fired all the time. It usually works out.

Well, from what I heard Treyarch's efforts sold 11 million copies of World AT War so far...nothing to sneeze at even if it took them 10x longer then it took to see that many MS2 copies. The mind-screeching secrete is Infinity Ward isn't that great at making games and Treyarch isn't that bad, it just so happens IW "goes for it" with stupid confidence.

“They say it takes more certainty than talent to become a star. I mean look at John Stamos.” (Glee)

That is Infinity Ward, they somehow believe they make great games and people believe them. Why? Well, because most gamers are desperate to believe in something in a world where Wii Play sells 26.71 million copies. It is either believe with all your heart MW2 is great or put a gun in your mouth and pull the trigger.
