Lets all forget about Ireland while we're at it!
Well fuck me... I just wrote a post about this myself. It hasnt appeared yet though.
Though I must add, that it would be unfair to the countries in Europe who speak English perfectly (the Scandinavian region for instance) that they're stuck with the rest of Europe.
I understand that living in the UK sucks because of this game delay. But what your asking for is basically to having your own UK localized version, then a Euro localized version. This costs money! Lots of it because it require essentially more work, more man hours and more production costs. What gain is there? None really.
You guys basically have to eat a dick because your in an union with the rest of Europe. Petitions are nice, but to the companies that distribute games, Money is king. Too bad your games already cost an arm and a leg.
Bitch, bitch, bitch is not all I do.
What I don't understand is why you guys don't have a grey market for American games? Think Play-Asia, but Play-America. Where they import games from America to the UK. And they charge like 10 (pounds or euros) more for a game that is "released" nearly on par with America.
I guess the then associated problems with this is are, Region locking and compatibility of American machines with UK TVs. Is this a problem?
I don't think we should split, I think the game companies should get their ass in gear. Why they can't have global release dates is just silly.
While I accept a worldwide release date is a difficult thing to do, many games do come out over here at a reasonable delay...some even sooner then the NTSC versions...But why can't all games be this way?
I agree with wardrox. We shouldn't split because we are a part of the EU and in theory segregating ourselves could lead to increased tarrifs but that maybe being a bit melodramatic....
and as Miike said there's no way publishers will localize the UK because it costs too much money....
Global release dates can be done as seen with Mass Effect, Halo 3, Assassins Creed, Mario Galaxy (see Nintendo can do it if they want to!) and CoD4 which all came out at as close as you can get to the same day in the US and UK..... so it's down to publishers getting their shit together and more people like us to buy them because if it sells they'll get it out asap
To be honest, its only really Nintendo titles that are a bitch for this now, many of the games released on Sony and Microsoft systems are released within a week of the US version, or on occassion, a week before (e.g. we got The Club on Friday)
@Rivaoni: Nintendo's the main culprit and by far the worst but microsoft and sony can be just as bad. Uncharted came out about 3 weeks after the US, as did Blue Dragon I think and let's not forget Persona 3, Odin Sphere, Rock Band and Phoenix Wright:Trials and Tribulations haven't come out yet
Does NTSC and PAL still apply to the HDTV era?
Meaning if i brought my american xbox to UK, could I play it?
what about region locking? Can you just buy american game versions and play with that?
@ Miike
NTSC and PAL only apply to region coding these days, whereas in the days of yore it applied to TV signal as well.
If you brought your US 360 to the UK it would work fine as long as you got a power transformer or else the voltage difference would blow up your console :(
The games however are partly region locked. I say partly because it's down to the discretion of the publisher whether or not to region lock it so some games do and others don't. So not all American games will work on a UK 360.
PS3 is completely region free so you can buy games for that from anywhere and it will work (you can also download firmware from any region)
Funnily enough Nintendo are the ones yet again to screw us over. The wii is completely region locked and the firmware updates make sure of that. If you play a foreign game it will either not run due to the current firmware installed or install the new firmware which not only won't let you play the foreign game but it will also stop you playing the correct region version of the game because of the incompatible firmware installed from the foreign game and then you have to format the wii which should restore it to factory settings....
@Miike
whoops forgot to properly answer your 1st question which was "Does NTSC and PAL still apply to the HDTV era" and the answer is no. Well at least I don't think so as long as you use a digital cable to connect (HDMI or component) I don't see why there should be a problem
