About Me
Well, my name is Shauni Maple. I am 20yrs of age. AND I FUCKING LOVE GAMES.

I've been playing video games since the age of three, and to this day I am constantly playing games; I am a hardcore fan of RPGs and JRPGs. However I do like classic point-and-click games, like Grim Fandango, Curse of monkey Island. Diskworld is pretty neat too. I have played every Final Fantasy game, and beaten 1 through 10-2. ;3 (Some 100%). And my boyfriend has gotten me into rhythm games like, DDR, Elite Beat Agents, etc etc.

The consoles I've own/ed are:
-Sega Megadrive
-SNES
-Nintendo 64
-Playstation X
-Playstation 2 & PS2 Slim
-Gameboy colour
-Gameboy Advance
-Gameboy Advance SP
-Gameboy Micro
-DS
-DS Lite
-Xbox 360
-Playstation 3
-PSP
-(SOON TO BE) 3DS

... I think that is all of them. xD

My favourite Games are: Final Fantasy series, Kingdom Hearts Series, Eternal Sonata, Tales of saga, Chrono Trigger, any Mario games, Phoenix Wright Series, Pokemon <3, Grim Fandango, Sims, Rockband/Guitar Hero, Grand Theft Auto, etc etc.

But yeah, living in the UK is fun, due to being able to do Games Design at Bolton University <3 Game releases can be awful over here though!

Aswell as loving video games, I love anime, manga, drawing and anything Japanese really. :P I also love my wonderful Boyfriend of 4yrs and 5months, who is doing Computer Software and Development at Bolton University.

Reviewing experimental games
Misstawnii | 5:39 AM on 03.23.2010 9 comments

I am doing a 3 year games design degree at the University of Bolton, UK. I am a first-year student and I have just started my reviewing section of my Games Evaluation module. :3 It is... interesting to say the least.

The games we are playing in class are all experimental games: such as 'Ulitsa Dimitrova', 'EveryDayTheSameDream', 'Star Guard' and 'Spectre'. I have really enjoyed all of these short and sweet games, regardless of a lack of story and graphics in some of them. I have found these games to be quite inspiring, and are driving me to make my own short experimental game whilst in uni. :D I mean, the teachers are encouraging us to make our own games to get our name out there, but seeing and playing these games, as well as reviewing them, is making me want to make my own so much more now. xD

What is the minimum amount of words you think a good games review would be?
Because I have to write between 30-100 words maximum, talking about the gameplay in the experimental games we are playing. At first I thought writing 30 words was crazy, and that I would struggle to write this amount of words to express an objective view of a game. I mean, at first I did struggle to write 30 words about 'Ulitsa Dimitrova' as I felt I needed to talk about the background story of the game, but I could only fit talking about the core mechanics and the gameplay in 30 words. However, during the next lesson our lecturer took us through everyone's reviews; some crude but it made me realise that we could all get our points across in this small word limit.

Before I did this module, I thought a short review would consist of a few hundred words to get the reviewer's point across, but my lecturer believes that as long as a review covers all the objective views of the game, along with some subjective views. Which I can agree with from writing my own short reviews.

Playing these experimental games, and focusing on just writing the core facts about these games is making me understand basic metrics and mechanics more and more~ Which is also making me realise that games really don't need fancy graphics and a good narrative to make a good game. I mean, don't get me wrong, I do love the pretty graphics in games, but it isn't important. Which is also my reason for not wanting a FF7 re-make. Fancy graphics would ruin it; I love playing that game with the block-hands and all!
Anyone else agree?

But yeah, this blog was really random, I really should write them more often... I guess I just wanted to know what people's thoughts on writing tiny reviews are. :)

Thanks for reading!

The worst part about writing just 30 words is that it's never enough. Not even the words on the back of the box goes that shallow. Usually.

Experimental games have to be really frustrating though. I watched that video of that Russian whatever game and my God, while I appreciate the necessity to get across a message...don't put that in my games, or at least, not anviliciously so.

And yeah, you're one of the very few who doesn't want an FF7 remake, though my reasoning is different than yours. =P

Thirty words is not a lot but if you could summarize your view on the game to that fine a point then a lot of people would read and enjoy that. It would be a bite-sized chunk of information that people could absorb and process quite easily.

As for the elusive Final Fantasy VII....eh, take it or leave it. I'd buy it for $20 maybe but I don't dream about it. Now a Final Fantasy III(VI, whatever) remake.....holy shit. I'd drive a bus full of orphans off a cliff to get that made.

@Doomsday Forte: I think Ulitsa Dimitrova must have been created more for the edgy factor, rather than actual gameplay; being 'Point and Click' and all~ I recommend playing 'EveryDayTheSameDream' though. :)

@Occams electric toothbrush: I would LOVE a FFVI remake; I loved the job system. <3 At least I'm not the only one that would love a FFVI remake.

I remember trying to help you write a review at 30 words. My brain couldn't even comprehend writing something that small. Though, I can see exactly why you should be able to now; it's quick, to the point, and tells you what you want to know.

As for experimental games, I've played a few before, and I have to agree that they give you a completely different perspective on games to what you have before, and is a good idea to try if you're looking at going in to a career in games.

Also, you and me both know that if an FF7 sequel does come out, it will sell like hotcakes regardless of its quality. It could be a blank disk and people would still buy it because of the label.

writing only 30 words on any topic is a good challenge!! (especially for someone like myself who tends to use way too many words).

@Elsa: Well you used 24 words telling me, hehe :P So I bet you'd be able to write a review in 30words. :D

Blaise Pascal once said, "I am sorry for the length of my letter, but I had not the time to write a short one."

Essentially, writing is easy when you have not limitations on length. The task for a small review is difficult, but not impossible. I suggest you think deeply about it for a while. Boil down your thoughts to only the most important and the most easily conveyed.
