I was confused by this as well since I got a headshot on him.
No matter where you shoot him, the "canon" event is that his arm gets blown off, so he actually survived even though everyone thought he was dead he only lost his arm.
I thought it was pretty stupid the way they handled this because I had no idea what was going on because of it.
Me too! For the rest of the game I was thinking he was dead, I didn't even notice that when I was sniping him he had both arms. :/

Answer, you hit his arm, and you arespoiling the game for people with this post.
When you shoot him, his arm flies off and McMillan says that shock and blood loss will take care of the rest. If you notice through the present portion of the game (and at the end when you take him out), his left arm is missing.

And thanks ForzenSpaceMonkey, I really didn't hear McMillan say anything like that. I think I might go replay that level, the rest of the game was awkward not knowing that he was still alive. :(

I thought it was pretty obvious that he didn't die, but I did thought it was lame in a "Goldeneye" kind of way.

I think you hear McMillan say when you hit him that he thought he saw his arm fly off.

It's a game set in combat with weapons, and get this, people get shot and eventually someone dies. Crazy stuff, man.
