Nostaljourney is a retro gaming podcast that features an new cast every episode. Each episode is based on discussing a particular game or series, then finding people who are nostalgic for it and people who have never played it before. If need be we go so far as to donate all the necessary gaming hardware to the newcomers. We compare the experiences of the two groups to find out how well a game has really aged as well as discuss its history.

For younger community members it may be a chance to learn what gaming was like in the past. For older community members it may be a chance to discover what games are truly classic and what games are not. In general the show exists to evaluate and discuss the nature of nostalgia and for everyone in the community to get to know each other better. Because the show involves giving out free games, it only records once every couple of months.

Recent changes to the game plan will hopefully entail the show recording every 2 weeks.

Shadows of the Damned - Multiplatform
Alice: Madness Returns - Multiplatform
Dead Rising 2 - Multiplatform
Radiant Historia - Nintendo DS
Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - Nintendo DS
Ace Attorney Investigations - Nintendo DS

Wryviews are my personal review series where I try to do things different from the norm by asking myself how well the game achieved its goal, instead of if I liked the game or not. Wryviews are a personal challenge to stay objective and identify who would enjoy a certain game, rather than complain about who wouldn't. I feel that being a good reviewer entails being able to identify each game's audience.

Mega Man and Bass - Gameboy Advance
Maken X - Dreamcast

Gemnalysis is a series where I hunt down lesser known or neglected games and make a case for playing them despite the fact that they're older. Instead of flat out reviewing these games I look at them from the perspective of a collector and go over the game's history, and special trivia it may have.

Boss Battle - Mark of the Wolves
Boss Battle + Final Match - King of Fighters 98

Fatal Impact is a series of community tournaments revolving around SNK fighters; rather, it was. I happen to host the tournaments, but only once in a blue moon when I have the free time. I accept any and all callers, though I am not an entrant. Instead I am a trainer who organizes my entrants and helps to improve their game while introducing them to new and lesser appreciated fighting games.

The Fatal Impact tournaments will likely not continue until SNK releases games with better netcode. With recent promises from Atlus, King of Fighters XIII is likely to become the next big Fatal Impact game.

King of Fighters 94
King of Fighters 95
King of Fighters 96
King of Fighters 97

The King of Fighters Love Letter is a series dedicated to the storyline and history of SNK fighting games. Many people don't know anything about SNK in general, and with King of Fighters XIII on its way I'm going to bring everyone up to speed on the story in the series thus far.

Now that King of Fighters XIII has an actual release date this series may continue beyond the first story arc (Orochi Saga), but it's difficult to find solid information on the series' backstory.

Podsumaki Episode 09: Mortal Kombat Special
Podsumaki is a fighting game podcast that I hosted on and organized. There was a lot of random smack talk but it was a fun show. Currently it's on hold and none of the hosts are sure if it will ever come back. Our last episode was our highlight, where we spoke with three of the best Mortal Kombat players in the US and discussed the Mortal Kombat community and the upcoming game. If you were to listen to any one episode of Podsumaki, I'd recommend it be this.

The Top Three Things "Gamers" Should Care About Less
Somebody on Call of Duty: Black Ops screamed at me for not being good enough at the game, even though I wasn't on his team. Thanks to that I decided to write an article on some of the biggest problems with the gaming community, mostly their inability to care about things that actually matter.

Tainted Beauty: The Death and Rebirth of a Genre
What we have here is an article revolving around the 2D fighting game genre, the path one must go through to become good at the games, and all the obstacles in the way of this that I feel eventually led to the temporary death of the genre prior to the release of games like Street Fighter IV and BlazBlue.

Wry Guides: Goozex Training Manual
Wry Guides are a series where I try to educate the people of the community by writing about something that I in particular know a lot about. More than anything else though, it's just me unleashing a bad pun upon the world.

Top 11 Dreamcast Games You Probably Didn't Play
In this article I recap my experience as a guy who loved the Dreamcast, because he grew up with it as one of his primary forms of entertainment. The games listed aren't the popular and trendy choices so much as the lesser played B-list and C-list games that only true Dreamcast veterans touched.

Hey, I liked it: Mega Man VII
Hey, I liked it was a series where I reflected on games that I'm fond of that weren't appreciated by many people. As opposed to Wryviews which are meant to be impartial, this was a much more personal series. This series might continue some day but I could really not think of a bigger black sheep game than Mega Man VII.

Wry's Dreamcast Homebrew Guide: Pre-Brewed
There was a time when I was extremely, extremely into my Dreamcast. I didn't just play tons of regular games that I found on sale, I also researched the wealth of bootleg Dreamcast programs. These days I'm a collector and I'm not concerned with unofficial software. I'm too busy playing games I actually own. Still I created a quick guide to some of the easiest and best programs available for the Dreamcast that can be used with no hassle.

Untapped potential: Stop breaking my balls
I suck at games: But not forever
My Expertise: The Grand Jackass of Obscurity
Nothing is sacred: Sequels
Groundhog Day: Can you feel the sunshine, Sonic?
I started writing about games roughly a year and a half ago, and since then my viewpoints and my writing style have changed. Destructoid's Monthly Musings were a good way for me to get started when I didn't have many article ideas. These are all the ones I wrote that were promoted to the front page. I'm not super proud of them anymore, but if you want to see my writings evolve a little bit you can compare these to my more recent articles.

Welcome back to Nostaljourney, the community based podcast where we donate retro games to people who never had a chance to play them. Today we're looking for three cast members, two of which will be walking away with a full Dreamcast rig and a copy of Jet Grind Radio. This episode is a total reversal of last time. With the Mega Man episode it was nearly impossible to find anyone who was not at least a little nostalgic for the Mega Man games. Even though it was a good episode we didn't have anybody who needed contributions and we didn't have any fresh perspectives.

This time around there are so few people nostalgic for Jet Grind Radio that it's quite possible the majority of our cast will be new to the game. Regardless we'll be accepting auditions from anybody, whether you've never heard of Jet Grind Radio or you bought it the first day. Personally Jet Grind Radio is a game that ruled my childhood, and I'll be having a lot of fun speaking with someone else about this game. Nostaljourney's all about sharing your love for a classic game with someone after all.

Like I said, we'll be providing two Dreamcasts to the community so that they can join us. Here's how you audition: Introduce yourself to the cast. Tell us about yourselves and why you want to be on the show. Show us that you're a fun person that we can be enthusiastic about doing a podcast with. There's no need to be formal. Just be yourself. At the end of the day the cast will talk about who they liked and pick someone to be on the show. One thing you can't forget to mention is if you're nostalgic for the game or not, and if you already have the game.

You won't just be letting us get to know you. Everyone on D-Toid will know a little bit more about you by the end of it. Don't worry too much, though. The podcast will record for a few hours at the worst and the game itself isn't very long. We all have a lot of fun during the recording and spend more time off-topic than we do talking about the games. Nostaljourney has a natural flow to it. We don't force conversation. Just keep in mind a few simple rules:

  • Your availability must be open enough that you have time to play the entire game and be available for a podcast.
  • The cast will all decide on a recording date and need to be able to make it.
  • You will need a decent headset and a Skype account.

And don't forget. The most important part of dance is music.

Who's gonna answer the call? *patriotic music plays*
I'm surprised nobody's asked me how this blog has margins yet.
I have to be honest, I had a Dreamcast since day one, and I love it, but I have never played Jet Grind Radio or it's sequel. And I'd be awesome on this because...I'd be awesome on this.
Only played JSRF really... I remember trying to play JGR a little and it was kind of wonky controlling compared to the X Box sequel. No way I'd ever have time to beat it anyways.
Only played JSRF myself. I wish I was open enough to which I'd toss my hat in for this.
Holy crap! How DO you have proper margins?
ITS MY FAVORITE GAME!!! ME ME ME
I mean, uhh, I'd like to be apart of this.
Plus, I already have the game and a full dreamcast.
Is it too soon for me to do it again?
I played this game once. Wasn't really blown away. But that was many years after release. This is not something I'd be much use for, but I do like the idea of joining in on a podcast. Perhaps sometime down the road, or if anyone has plans to start one up, I might possibly be interested in being a part of that.

Just sayin.
I've got my Dreamcast and JSR but I'd doubt I'd be available for a full podcast guys.
Holy flying cock. Gimme like two seconds to get dressed and I am so fucking about this. You fuckers don't even know.
Seriously, I originally bought The World Ends With You for no other reason than the fact that it looks like Jet Grind Radio. And I've still got my Dreamcast, but I'm not nearly as big of a fan as Alex is. He thinks the game is gold-encrusted and perfect, while I've still got some beef with the controls. But damn the art and music are awesome: I've got Everybody Jump Around and Miller Ball Breakers on my iTunes.
When I was a little kid I rarely bought games. Just never had the money, so I rented them. And I wasn't the most educated kid in videogames so I always shopped by what had the coolest box art (which surprisingly worked out really well for me). I was always really into extreme sports games like Tony Hawk and Dave Mirra. So when I picked up Jet Grind Radio on that magical winter I totally just expected another Tony Hawk but on skates. BOOM! Life changing moment!

The colors and the music were crazy influential to me. Every time I got the cash I rented JGR and that was my whole weekend. I never even beat the game (I was a kid, I rarely ever beat entire games) but just skating around tagging, looking at the colors, listening to the music, it was such a surreal and gorgeous experience. It was the first game I ever actually felt a connection to and that was even before I really got into videogames enough to start forming opinions and educating myself. It was all just passive recreation, like watching TV, until JGR came into my hands. That was the game that opened my eyes to the idea that videogames could be an experience. It was the first time I called a game "beautiful", it was the first soundtrack that ever compelled me (and clearly had something to do with the music nerd I've become), the first characters that really influenced me.

After that winter some jerk rented JGR and never brought it back. I was heartbroken but now that I knew those experiences existed I wanted more. I subscribed to Official Sega Magazine, I kept tabs on the people who created the game, I followed a select few favorite companies on the early pre-shit version of GameSpot, it really was just friggin' spiritual as a little kid.

But again, I never beat it, something I always regretted. I bought it once and within that week my little brother, who was a baby at the time, cracked it. Pissed me the fuck off. Years later I bought it again in a Salvation Army but didn't have a Dreamcast and then in between two moves it was lost. Now I actually work in a videogame store that specializes in a lot of the older consoles and I've kept my eye out but still have yet to find a man who'll part with his Jet Grind Radio.

Now admittedly I have played, and loved the fuck out of, Jet Set Radio Future. It's one of my favorites. But it's such a different game in some respects. To get the original, knowing what I know now, and to finish it has always been high on my bucket list. I would fucking love to play it again, and moreover I would fucking love to shoot the shit about it with a bunch of people who love it as well. Hell, you can even not love it. Just be nice to talk about it. Jet Set is such a fantastic universe that exist in a wonderful corner of it's own. It isn't like most underrated games where the universe can grow stale without someone to come along and do it fan service. It, to me, is brimming and alive all on its own independent of the constant re-visitation that so many circles must do to keep their overlooked gems shining.

So yeah, I'm kind of a nut about Jet Set Radio, or Jet Grind Radio, whatever you want to call it. I would gladly put aside time to play the game, and obviously, talk the hell out of it.
:O Oh snap, gotta get in on this!
First off, this: I wrote this not too long ago

So yes, I own the game and am very nostalgic for it! While it is my favorite game ever, this was only a recent epiphany. I definitely loved it back when I was a lil tyke in my room, I never got to fully appreciate it until I played it again. Sure I was bopping my head around to the music and fiddling with the custom spraypaint options, but I never saw just how RIDICULOUS the story was or how solid the art design was by the standards of the day.

To be honest, I'm not even sure I completed the game as a kid. I know I got far enough to unlock all the characters, but I definitely don't remember the ending. That's an ending that I would have remembered!

I also have never played the sequel, but also own that (thank you Goozex!). I've been meaning to give it a try, especially after seeing so much love for it on this site, but just haven't gotten around to it. Perhaps I don't want that slight chance of it being bad to ruin something I love so much...

So yeah, big fan of the game, and I have plenty of time to replay it/talk about it on a podcast.
@DimmuJed and Alex Barbatsis: If you guys really wanted to be in on this you really need to introduce yourselves properly to the cast. These one liner responses don't help anybody get to know you and that's half the point of Nostaljourney. Even if you don't get on the show leaving an introduction lets the rest of the site see your comment and learn something about you.

@Tony Ponce: I have a bit of web design background, so I know how to make the blogs my bitch in a few ways.

@Wedge: Mischief Makers episode is on the way eventually. Probably two episodes away. If you got time for that one lemme know.

@Jonathan Holmes: Nah, it's not too early. Ponce is on this one too, and it occurred to me that having a staple of "regulars" gives the show a bit more personality. Anybody new on the show has a chance of becoming a new regular, that's become the new idea.

@Roager: If you wanna talk to me some time about what games you'd be interested in doing a show on, I'm free to listen.

@LK404: I'm not surprised you have some beef with the controls. They're a little tough to use, but they're manageable. The game has too many good things going for it to let that ruin things, though.

@Xyzliac: Very good introduction. All the other hosts will be giving their input on it when everyone's done posting.
Oh right, should probably say a bit more. ^_^

This sounds like it'd be a lot of fun! I used to have a Dreamcast, but I reached a point where my game collection was causing me a lot of anxiety so I sold it off. Never got around to playing JGR, and never did pick up JSRF for XBox. Really curious what the differences between them are.

As for who I am, I'm ScottyG: CBlog Recapper extrodinaire! Been on dtoid about three and a half years (got into it from the early days of Retroforce Go!), and had an account since meeting some Dtoid staff at e4all in 2007. Used to organize PC Friday Night Fights back when Team Fortress 2 had a much stronger presence on the site, and I'm the guy that made that dtoid mosaic print for PAX in 2009. I've tried to use my cblog as some sort of writing/content platform, but tbh apathy really kicks in when you've been unemployed as long as I have. I try to keep up with the front page and cblogs as best as I can. :)

Other than that I'm just your resident bitter, passive aggressive asshole that makes snide comments, and has a strong dislike for drunk ginger liars and little tear-eating molesters. (See? There I go again! D:)
This blog is full of witchcraft! There are margins where margins shouldn't exist! It looks positively normal.

I own a copy of both JSRF and JSR. They are beloved games and I definitely want to throw my hat into the ring for this.

Seriously, these games are amazing and I can't wait for the podcast!

Either way, I'm totally in the mood to replay these games.
Not entering myself but just wanted to say this is pretty damn awesome.

I have never been able to play this game. This makes me sad because it seems like it would be right up my alley. I've always liked the art style of the game, and the music has been played for me on multiple occasions. I also think the idea of starting a revolution through music and graffiti. I can't wait to hear the show.
Would you stop playing with that radio, Lord? I'm trying to get some sleep.

YEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAA

DUH-NAHNAH-NAH!

Man, whoever walks away with those DCs and JGR are lucky sons of bitches.
I never finished Mischief Makers, so that would be a good excuse for me to do so, yes. SHAKESHAKE.
Well I suppose I could try to be a cast member for this episode.

My childhood consisted of the crazy monster collecting fad of the Pokemon games
starting with Pokemon gold for the game boy color

I did not really start playing music games until my close friend got guitar hero 2 for the PS2 and we both would play CO-OP with me playing bass. Later on for my Christmas present at the age to 11 I got me a DS and later heard about a amazing game called "Elite Beat Agents" and played it to fall back in love with the genre "later finding out that there were 2 others in the series which I also played only to love some more.

I heard about the Jet set games from some old episodes of podtoid where I then looked them up only to find that they had some unique game-play focused on skating and music

I am only currently 14 so I have never played a Dreamcast at all (for shame!!) so I would really like to be able to experience a game for the system I never owned. I also have enough free time to play it and talk about it via Skype (finally got me a mic for my PC!)
@Winged Kirby: Unfortunately the cast has already been chosen for a while now. You're fairly young, which works in your favor in a way. I want to try introducing older games to people who've never gone near them to see what they'll think, but this episode we're already full up. Check back for later episodes.
@KK Wry

Can't wait to see how this episode turns out
JGR is the best!
