I have to be honest, I had a Dreamcast since day one, and I love it, but I have never played Jet Grind Radio or it's sequel. And I'd be awesome on this because...I'd be awesome on this.
Only played JSRF really... I remember trying to play JGR a little and it was kind of wonky controlling compared to the X Box sequel. No way I'd ever have time to beat it anyways.
I played this game once. Wasn't really blown away. But that was many years after release. This is not something I'd be much use for, but I do like the idea of joining in on a podcast. Perhaps sometime down the road, or if anyone has plans to start one up, I might possibly be interested in being a part of that.
Just sayin.
Just sayin.
Holy flying cock. Gimme like two seconds to get dressed and I am so fucking about this. You fuckers don't even know.
Seriously, I originally bought The World Ends With You for no other reason than the fact that it looks like Jet Grind Radio. And I've still got my Dreamcast, but I'm not nearly as big of a fan as Alex is. He thinks the game is gold-encrusted and perfect, while I've still got some beef with the controls. But damn the art and music are awesome: I've got Everybody Jump Around and Miller Ball Breakers on my iTunes.
When I was a little kid I rarely bought games. Just never had the money, so I rented them. And I wasn't the most educated kid in videogames so I always shopped by what had the coolest box art (which surprisingly worked out really well for me). I was always really into extreme sports games like Tony Hawk and Dave Mirra. So when I picked up Jet Grind Radio on that magical winter I totally just expected another Tony Hawk but on skates. BOOM! Life changing moment!
The colors and the music were crazy influential to me. Every time I got the cash I rented JGR and that was my whole weekend. I never even beat the game (I was a kid, I rarely ever beat entire games) but just skating around tagging, looking at the colors, listening to the music, it was such a surreal and gorgeous experience. It was the first game I ever actually felt a connection to and that was even before I really got into videogames enough to start forming opinions and educating myself. It was all just passive recreation, like watching TV, until JGR came into my hands. That was the game that opened my eyes to the idea that videogames could be an experience. It was the first time I called a game "beautiful", it was the first soundtrack that ever compelled me (and clearly had something to do with the music nerd I've become), the first characters that really influenced me.
After that winter some jerk rented JGR and never brought it back. I was heartbroken but now that I knew those experiences existed I wanted more. I subscribed to Official Sega Magazine, I kept tabs on the people who created the game, I followed a select few favorite companies on the early pre-shit version of GameSpot, it really was just friggin' spiritual as a little kid.
But again, I never beat it, something I always regretted. I bought it once and within that week my little brother, who was a baby at the time, cracked it. Pissed me the fuck off. Years later I bought it again in a Salvation Army but didn't have a Dreamcast and then in between two moves it was lost. Now I actually work in a videogame store that specializes in a lot of the older consoles and I've kept my eye out but still have yet to find a man who'll part with his Jet Grind Radio.
Now admittedly I have played, and loved the fuck out of, Jet Set Radio Future. It's one of my favorites. But it's such a different game in some respects. To get the original, knowing what I know now, and to finish it has always been high on my bucket list. I would fucking love to play it again, and moreover I would fucking love to shoot the shit about it with a bunch of people who love it as well. Hell, you can even not love it. Just be nice to talk about it. Jet Set is such a fantastic universe that exist in a wonderful corner of it's own. It isn't like most underrated games where the universe can grow stale without someone to come along and do it fan service. It, to me, is brimming and alive all on its own independent of the constant re-visitation that so many circles must do to keep their overlooked gems shining.
So yeah, I'm kind of a nut about Jet Set Radio, or Jet Grind Radio, whatever you want to call it. I would gladly put aside time to play the game, and obviously, talk the hell out of it.

First off, this: I wrote this not too long ago
So yes, I own the game and am very nostalgic for it! While it is my favorite game ever, this was only a recent epiphany. I definitely loved it back when I was a lil tyke in my room, I never got to fully appreciate it until I played it again. Sure I was bopping my head around to the music and fiddling with the custom spraypaint options, but I never saw just how RIDICULOUS the story was or how solid the art design was by the standards of the day.
To be honest, I'm not even sure I completed the game as a kid. I know I got far enough to unlock all the characters, but I definitely don't remember the ending. That's an ending that I would have remembered!
I also have never played the sequel, but also own that (thank you Goozex!). I've been meaning to give it a try, especially after seeing so much love for it on this site, but just haven't gotten around to it. Perhaps I don't want that slight chance of it being bad to ruin something I love so much...

@DimmuJed and Alex Barbatsis: If you guys really wanted to be in on this you really need to introduce yourselves properly to the cast. These one liner responses don't help anybody get to know you and that's half the point of Nostaljourney. Even if you don't get on the show leaving an introduction lets the rest of the site see your comment and learn something about you.
@Tony Ponce: I have a bit of web design background, so I know how to make the blogs my bitch in a few ways.
@Wedge: Mischief Makers episode is on the way eventually. Probably two episodes away. If you got time for that one lemme know.
@Jonathan Holmes: Nah, it's not too early. Ponce is on this one too, and it occurred to me that having a staple of "regulars" gives the show a bit more personality. Anybody new on the show has a chance of becoming a new regular, that's become the new idea.
@Roager: If you wanna talk to me some time about what games you'd be interested in doing a show on, I'm free to listen.
@LK404: I'm not surprised you have some beef with the controls. They're a little tough to use, but they're manageable. The game has too many good things going for it to let that ruin things, though.
@Xyzliac: Very good introduction. All the other hosts will be giving their input on it when everyone's done posting.

Oh right, should probably say a bit more. ^_^
This sounds like it'd be a lot of fun! I used to have a Dreamcast, but I reached a point where my game collection was causing me a lot of anxiety so I sold it off. Never got around to playing JGR, and never did pick up JSRF for XBox. Really curious what the differences between them are.
As for who I am, I'm ScottyG: CBlog Recapper extrodinaire! Been on dtoid about three and a half years (got into it from the early days of Retroforce Go!), and had an account since meeting some Dtoid staff at e4all in 2007. Used to organize PC Friday Night Fights back when Team Fortress 2 had a much stronger presence on the site, and I'm the guy that made that dtoid mosaic print for PAX in 2009. I've tried to use my cblog as some sort of writing/content platform, but tbh apathy really kicks in when you've been unemployed as long as I have. I try to keep up with the front page and cblogs as best as I can. :)
Other than that I'm just your resident bitter, passive aggressive asshole that makes snide comments, and has a strong dislike for drunk ginger liars and little tear-eating molesters. (See? There I go again! D:)

This blog is full of witchcraft! There are margins where margins shouldn't exist! It looks positively normal.
I own a copy of both JSRF and JSR. They are beloved games and I definitely want to throw my hat into the ring for this.
Seriously, these games are amazing and I can't wait for the podcast!
Either way, I'm totally in the mood to replay these games.

I have never been able to play this game. This makes me sad because it seems like it would be right up my alley. I've always liked the art style of the game, and the music has been played for me on multiple occasions. I also think the idea of starting a revolution through music and graffiti. I can't wait to hear the show.
Would you stop playing with that radio, Lord? I'm trying to get some sleep.
YEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAA
DUH-NAHNAH-NAH!
Man, whoever walks away with those DCs and JGR are lucky sons of bitches.

Well I suppose I could try to be a cast member for this episode.
My childhood consisted of the crazy monster collecting fad of the Pokemon games
starting with Pokemon gold for the game boy color
I did not really start playing music games until my close friend got guitar hero 2 for the PS2 and we both would play CO-OP with me playing bass. Later on for my Christmas present at the age to 11 I got me a DS and later heard about a amazing game called "Elite Beat Agents" and played it to fall back in love with the genre "later finding out that there were 2 others in the series which I also played only to love some more.
I heard about the Jet set games from some old episodes of podtoid where I then looked them up only to find that they had some unique game-play focused on skating and music
I am only currently 14 so I have never played a Dreamcast at all (for shame!!) so I would really like to be able to experience a game for the system I never owned. I also have enough free time to play it and talk about it via Skype (finally got me a mic for my PC!)

@Winged Kirby: Unfortunately the cast has already been chosen for a while now. You're fairly young, which works in your favor in a way. I want to try introducing older games to people who've never gone near them to see what they'll think, but this episode we're already full up. Check back for later episodes.
