Strategy JRPGS. Totally Underrated.

So, I was looking over at the boards for a certain pisshole of the interwebs that may possibly have something to do with Games and FAQS, when i stumbled onto yet another topic on their ps3 board self-congratulating themselves on Last Remnant not coming to the pstriple.

Along with the usual reactions of indifference up to people berating the game as horrible and people who loved the game arguing. As usual it somehow devolved into an argument over sales figures of various rpgs. And I had at least one thought at that point, Just what DOES the average JRPG fan have against the strategy jrpg? Time and time again where I myself or someone else has pointed to Valkyria Chronicles as a shining example of a good rpg for the ps3, it gets beat down for "yeah, but its a strategy rpg" as the reason why it sold poorly.

I seriously don't get that reasoning, really. Now don't get me wrong, I fully understand there is a league of difference in battle systems between an japanese SRPG like valkyria, Disgaea, Sakura Taisen, or my favorite series on earth, Super Robot Wars, and something like FF7 or Lost Odyssey. But once you get past that, a lot of the things that attract people to one are present in the other a lot.

Both have a large tendency to rely on linear, dramatic stories with more than a few anime tropes and genre conventions sprinkled everywhere. (as examples, I point to my avatar icon , Seolla Schweizer and her on again, off again "boyfriend" Arado Balanga, who pretty much exemplify the "bumbling lech + crazy cute tsundere" archetype. They just also happen to pilot crazy mecha capable of destroying large swaths of enemy mecha without breaking a sweat.), not to mention the same sort of "only this small group of plucky rules defiers can save us all"

Both tend to have largely orchestrated sountracks with lots of epic songs thrown in (such as my aforementioned love of Chrono cross' music, FF7's Music, etc, or on the other end of the spectrum in SRPGs, Jam project comes across as the big example, but almost all the major original characters in SRW have their own theme songs with a tendency to be hilariously over the top))

Both also tend to be exremely flashy, though i admit jrpgs settle more for over the top cutscenes while SRPGs tend to be more motivated to have all the flash be in the upper tier attacks of characters. And lets face it, there isn't a whole lot of difference in the over the top-ness of Sephiroth to a bunch of japanese girls in steam powered mecha using mystic powers and love to smash demons.

In summary, I'm just not really sure if its simply the way a battle flows in an srpg that turns people off to them, or what..because despite how much the average jrpg fan seems to insist they're two different genres..I really dont see a huge difference other than the length of battles. Maybe someone else who does see a difference could explain it to me? o.o

I agree. JSRPGs are unloved, other than the obligatory "FF Tactics rocks guyz". There's a ton of depth to them, and the customization meters are off the charts. I can still see why people would be turned off, though.

The big reason why people don't like them is because gamers generally don't want to spend their time in menus: and in most JSRPGs, that's the case. At least the time in standard JRPGs, the menu/customization is kept to a minimum.

I was saddened by Front Mission 4 selling so poorly, has anyone played FM3 again? Yea its got more stuff, its also more boring and convoluted, FM4 gave you 29 missions of mecha stomping action along wth 12 VR mission for a total 41 missions.

2 different stories, fantastic voice acting(seriously, the accents where perfect) and AWESOME STRATEGY GOODNESS.

I played the holy fuck of FM4, I want more of it.

Knights in the Nightmare anyone? Though, to be fair, it is getting good reviews. And I agree on Valkyria Chronicles. That game is pretty fun.

FM3 is one of my favorite games of all time. It also owns my "most epic game beating moment of all time": I literally was down to my last mech, with one arm, and 5 health when I slammed down the final enemy. I'll always remember that fight.

Would you really recommend FM4? You have great taste in games, so if you think I'd like it, I'll add it to my wishlist.

I'm also really sad that strategy rpgs are so underrated. While it's true many gamers have a lot of trouble getting past the amount of time spent in menus in said game I for one find playing a strategy rpg to completion much more satisfying than a regular rpg.

So many great strategy rpgs have come out that have gotten little to no recognition that it makes me seriously wonder about the future of these types of games.

Startegy RPGs are one of the genres I really do wish I could paly. Unfortunately, I already have a hard enough time with regular strategy games, but when you add in the RPG factors to manage, I just get completly lost >.>

If it's any reconciliation, Disgaea sold enough to earn Greatest Hits status.

I enjoy strategy RPGs, but I usually suck at them. That's probably why I'm enjoying Jeanne D'Arc on the PSP so much. It's a really fun game with a great presentation and some interesting mechanics, but it's also fairly simple and easy. It's looking like it'll be the the first JRPG I've beaten in a very long time.

Yes, I too agree with you. Some people I feel prefer the more free nature of jrpgs, whereas jsrpgs require more time and thought to move around, fight etc.

I personally love both types. From FM3 and FM4, to Yggdra Union, Jean D'Arc and Fire Emblem, jsrpgs have been a lot of fun over the years. One of my favourites is Ring of Red on PS2, which though it was an early PS2 game still got good marks and is damn fun. Where's my Ring of Red 2, Konami? I'd so love to see an update of it.

Just imported a copy of Operation Darkness from the U.S, because it was never released in the U.K/EU. I don't have a PS3 to play Valkyria, so Operation Darkness is a good enough substitute, that's bizarrely cool in its own way.

Yeah, Knights in the Nightmare I will check out, since Sting have yet to let me down.

I really don't understand why some people aren't into SRPGs as well. To be honest I think I prefer JSPRGs over any other genre, even JRPGs. The main thing stopping me from playing them is I don't know which ones are good and half of them don't get released in Australia.

I have to admit Valkyria Chronicles is what really got me into the genre. Before that I had finished a few Fire Emblem games and am now playing Disgaea but not sure what else to get. Will look into some of the games mentioned :)

Make sure you check out nearly everything NIS has to offer (the makers of Disgaea), and get FF Tactics. I think you would especially like Phantom Brave, by NIS (coming to the Wii in August as well). If you like mechs, Front Mission is quality. If you don't mind playing old school games, check out Shining Force 2 and Tactics Ogre.

I also dig the Super Robot Wars series. The games are sorta easy most of the time, but they're still enjoyable.

Aside from what Magnalon mentioned about the amount of time spent navigating menus, which I think is valid, I might suggest that, at least in the minds of some gamers, adding that "Strategy" into the genre moniker just somehow suggests that an additional "layer" of time and effort is required to have any measure of success - more rules to memorize in the instruction booklet, more options in and out of battle to keep track of, lengthier campaigns, loads of characters and plot points to organize, and so on, to the point where it seems as if taking even a short "break" from the game will set you back to square one. Obviously this isn't always the case, but even personally I frequently catch myself being more hesitant to "commit" to a SRPG than a "regular" RPG when I'm deciding which game to play next. I'm not sure exactly what caused this mental block of sorts to come into being, but somehow, at least for me, it makes itself known quite capably.

Yea I would Magnalon, FM4 is very fun, especially if you like 3, its more streamlined as there's no vast internet and not a billion missions either but what's there works perfectly, customization is awesome and ripping an army to pieces with your overleveled mechs with ridiculous skills never gets old.

And why a wishlist? You can find it for like 10 bucks at any store.

Haha dude: I have like 50 games that are $10 on my wishlist, and I'm married, and on a budget.

But yea, you've sold me :D

yeah I'm a total SRPG whore. I don't really know why the genre gets so much flack, but it does have some notable entries beyond the Nippon Ichi stuff and the Final Fantasy Tactics games.

A conundrum indeed, I guess the extra layers of complexity are too much for the average JRPG player. I for one love me my Fire Emblem.

I don't think JRPG's are underrated. I think that douchebag trolls (and their websites) are overrated.

I love JRPG's and I'm pretty sure they also love those games in, uhm well, Japan.

Some people are just deathly afraid of any strategy in their RPG, I can't see any rational reason why. I suppose they must be the types that enjoy the JRPGs for something other than the number crunching and character management... but most JRPGs don't have much to offer past that >.>' (well the music, but you don't NEED the game for that).

@Justin: I don't think much of any SRW fan plays em for the difficulty setting. Its mostly an addiction to seeing giant robots in semi-chibified form beating the stuffing out of one another in a giant fanservice mashup.

I disagree.

They're not Under-rated.
They're Under-advertised and a rather Niche genre, but they are not Under-rated.

Almost everyone who has played Disgaea loves it.
Now replace Disgaea with Valkyria Chronicles/Super Robot Wars/Final Fantasy Tactics/Tactics Ogre/Fire Emblem.

They're just not high profile, They're actually one of the most consistently good genre of games.

I used to be into JRPGs of all sorts, but found the linearity and stereotypical plots to all of them rather annoying recently. Its the characters really, I kept trying to like FF but the main character always pissed me off. I think the poor sales are a reflection of a growing WRPG library.
