To all the nay-sayers that think there aren’t any good games on the Wii… you obviously haven’t played Counter Force!
What is Counter Force you ask? Counter Force is a 3D Shoot-em-up, along the same lines as Space Harrier, only you pilot a giant robot, whizzing through the air blasting countless baddies along the way. With graphics so good they rival all next generation consoles including the Sega Dreamcast!
Haha, okay seriously, this game does for video games what Dragon Wars did for movies. It’s so deliciously bad; you just have to play it to believe it. I split my sides laughing after witnessing the horrible presentation value of the game coupled with the voice over stating “Counter Force! The power is you!” um… wut? If the power is me, what the hell I am doing playing this garbage?
To be fair however, the game does make a few noble accomplishments, such as fluid and innovative control. You see you can pilot your robot one of two ways, simple by pressing the analog stick on your nunchuk or by not pressing the analog at all you can pilot the robot simply by tilting the nunchuk in the direction you want to move. The motion control actually works extremely well; it honestly feels as if you were using a big flight stick in the arcades. Also, oddly enough, both control schemes are implemented at the same time, so you may be twisting your wrists and decide it’s not working, just grab hold of the analog stick and you’re good to go. To have both schemes always available sounds stupid, but it worked for me. So that’s piloting the ship, the second part is firing, to do so, all you need to do is point where you want to shoot with the Wii Remote and start slamming on the buttons. The IR works very well too.
Sadly, the controls are the only good thing I can say about this game, as the rest of the game is just plain horrid. There’s so much crap flying around the screen it’s almost impossible to keep track of what’s coming and where, so you’ll constantly be getting hit and wondering, “What the hell just happened?” plus the graphics are comparable to a first generation Dreamcast title as noted earlier. The sound is generic, but suitable, the game only features five levels with no supplemental content. All in all, the game is just bad. That’s not say I didn’t enjoy my time with it however.
Also, I forgot to mention, my favorite part of the whole package was when I was reading the manual. One page said controls for single player and listed all the options about maneuvering and firing, as you would expect. Then I noticed on the next page all the controls were listed again, the same exact way, but this time it said controls for 2-player cooperative. I thought to myself, “I didn’t see any option in the game for 2-players” when I realized the instruction manual actually stated and I quote “To play cooperative-mode, one player controls the Nunchuk and one player controls the Remote.” Haha, yea, I thought that was hilarious. How freaking lame is that?
