About Me

Hellos to all strangers who have clicked on to my blog! Name is Jade, like everyone else on Destructoid I love video games, also anime too. My taste in video games varies, I love RPGs,adventure, platformers,RTS and some fighting games. My favorite game of all time is Okami.I would also like to see Threads of Fate 2 made and even Klonoa games, since I had some good memories with those games.Well if you wanna know more about me don't be afraid to ask ^_^!

What else...OH I live in NYC however...I hate living in Queens, but I still love Brooklyn the BEST :D! I was born on July 4th and I've been a gamer since 1994 thanks to my brother <3!I'm currently studying to become a preschool teacher too. Personally there is something about video games I just really love about and I kind of see it like going inside a interactive book that you're playing.

Games I'm currently playing:
Valkyria Chronicles
Mario&Luigi RPG 3
Assassin's Creed 1

Short blog: Thoughts on being a "Girl Gamer"
MellowBunny | 11:37 PM on 08.28.2009 21 comments

So first off I know I'm talking about a topic that's been beaten to death, but I wanted to talk about something different. Well not all too different. It's pretty much my experiences of being a female gamer. Let's get this straight I never liked the term "Girl Gamers", it just very dumb to put Girl at the end of a term that should be for both genders. However I'll use it here just because I'm little tired now.

I've been playing games since I was very young and I can thank my mother and older brothers for that. I still have little memories of using the SNES' Super Scope. It was fun when I was kid I would into this huge park that had a lot of trees and I use to pretend to be Link in the lost woods trying to find my sister who would be pretend to be the skull kid. I was a really into Zelda back when I was a kid ^_^. Thinking back to my childhood now most of it was surrounded by video games and anime, but mostly video games. I even remember the first time my brother handed me Super Mario Land and the underground theme scared me >_<!

Anyways, I never thought of myself being different from other gamers when I was a little girl and even now I still don't feel that difference. I always hear about how other female gamers experience guys who always react in a "OMG U R GIRRL GAMER!" when they find out a girl plays video games. For me I never experienced that from guys even in my local video game stores I don't get treated differently. So I don't understand where some female gamers are coming from most of the time.

Even when I was in high school the guys didn't really flock to me because of my gaming. Then again most of the guys in my high school weren't really gamers -__-; . When I did meet other gamers outside of school most didn't really make a big deal about me being a girl. I always thought maybe it's because I live in New York City and there must be a lot of other female gamers. However, now that I'm in college it's hard finding other gamers >_<! Whenever I see a person who playing on their DS or PSP I always feel tempted to start a conversation with them, but I don't -_-'. My shyness after all.

Forgot to say! I don't have many experiences with online gaming since I don't have the money or time for it now. I pretty much wasted most of my summer catching up on DS games.

From my point of view this is how I see myself: as a girl just loves video games. Don't make a big deal about it like most gamers it's just another hobby I love doing. Always thought of video games like a interactive book that you play in another world. I know...it's a silly way to look at video games and my family would laugh at me if I told them that's how I see video games as. Geez...I feel like I rambled on again dammit -_-'.

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

your "ramble" was a nice read even, as you said, is a rather beaten topic. But I get where you're coming from. Mainly cause my sister plays games so when I see another female gamer, it's cool and just see them as a gamer.

still, good read.

also....you wouldn't happen to have AIM? something tells me I already know you O_o. I know someone who lives in NYC (or at least NY) who plays games and anime and you really seem to fit said person I talk to sometimes.

I think that there are a lot more female gamers than people realize... but most female gamers I know are very similar to you - they tend more towards offline gaming. I do know several that are very active online gamers and I think that tends to be where more of the problems arise. The problems aren't because we're female... moreso just because we're a minority and anyone unusual can sometimes be targeted by the idiots that inhabit online gaming. Many female gamers hide their gender by using gender neutral nicks and by not using a mic... but more and more are openly participating and not bothering to hide the fact that they are female. They're not "grrrl gamers" - as you said, many are just "gamers". Gaming is just more fun, more social and more team oriented when you can freely talk.

I do think that those that make a huge issue out of being female... those that use their gender in a sexual manner to accumulate a collection of puppy-dog boy admirers - or those that get overly aggressive in terms of "you've been pwned by a girl" - they do tend to more identify with the "grrl gamer" nick and can make it difficult for those of us that just want to play the game.

But it's getting a LOT better in online play. Being female is starting to become "not a big deal" because there are more and more of us out there. When you finally do get an internet connection and the time, I hope you try it! It's a great way to meet some really nice people and have fun!

@Shin Oni:

Nope. Doesn't ring any bells. Sorry ^^'. I would've remembered that SN on my list since I don't really get rid of them. Besides mine is SakuraBunnyJade, I don't think that rings a bell to you.

Hey! I know you from the forums! I'm sorry that you feel like your gender leads to you being pigeonholed. Hopefully that won't happen here.

Hey Mellow, nice little post :-)

I know all to well where you are coming from and for someone who goes to events and has to deal with pr in a very male dominated environment, it gets very old very quickly.

While the 'innocent' flirting is fun for a time, I just want to stab myself after a while. Only such much giggling I can do. lol

I've also seen you around the forums! Hello!

Really, all I know is that you like Threads of Fate and Klonoa, so you're automatically cool regardless of gender.

I think I've said it before in previous comments but the girls I know who play videogames are way more hardcore than I am , I'm more wided in my knowlegde but these chicks know there Personas and Silent Hills (Examples). I can barely begin an RPG while on the other hand they've completed 5 endings and maxed out all of their characters with a perfect knowledge of the lore and a powerfull passion for it.

Respect the vageenas!

Welcome to Destructoid! Well the C-Blogs at least :P

Good post. In my experience, personally, women are usually very curious and/or interested in games but feel like they have to act up to some weird standard in order to do it, and I wish that wasn't the case. They either feel they have to play up the "GRRRL" thing and wear it like a badge and play in to the "sexy nerd/gamer/geek" stereotype thing, OR they have to play a subservient sort of role where it's cool if they play, but only so long as they know when to "get out of the way", so to speak, of the serious gamers. Blah to that I say!
Oh, and the first Klonoa game is like a god to me. :)

Besides the GRRRL gamer and subservient roles, I think there's a third category of female gamers that end up with a fanclub even though they'd rather not have one, which scares them into distancing themselves from gaming writ large. It's a shame, really, because while the gender gap is closing when it comes to outspoken gamers, it's closing very, very slowly.

I'll admit, I was on the "omg girl gamer" bandwagon back in...I don't know, middle school? Honestly I believe people grow out of it, for the most part. I would be more excited by knowing people with similar interests. Like, you know, Dtoid New York! :D
