Historical Importance of Assassin's Creed 2
McKillagan | 9:00 PM on 04.10.2009 19 comments

So by now I am sure that every gamer has witnessed the new Altaire, now named Ezio Auditore de Firenze. Hence the new location is Italy. After reading comments from readers on Destructoid and Joystiq (nobody goes there...) I decided that some things should be clarified about the fabulous new Assassin.

Ezio is a noblemen from Florence Italy and the date takes place in the 1400s, a couple of hundred years after Assassin's Creed numero uno. This time period is also known as the Italian Renaissance, which literally means re-birth. This renaissance was considered a re-birth of the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome. It was during this period that arts and philosophies began to change. To narrow down historic importance to my point, I must get to Ezio's flamboyant garb. As a nobleman, Ezio would have been well educated in the arts and literature (since the printing press was just invented in this century). The following quote by an Italian philosopher at the time illustrates the impact this movement had on society.

"...everything that surrounds us is our own work, the work of man: all dwellings, all castles, all cities, all the edifices throughout the whole world, which are so numerous and of such quality that they resemble the works of angels rather than men. Ours are the paintings, the sculptures; ours are the trades sciences and philosophical systems." — Gianozzo Manetti, 1452

The new style blends in differently from Altaire, in that Altaire blended in with the common folk as a priest. Although he had an arsenal of weapons clearly displayed. Ezio now blends in with a higher class. This will be more relevant historically as they document assassinations of important political figures. Priests or Monks at this point and place in time would have had the famous brown cloaks. Which would not have looked cool now matter how many knives you tie to your back.

Can't wait for Assassin's Creed 2!
[UPDATE, Someone corrected a piece from here on Ezio not meaning eagle. Sorry. Feel free to chime in if you suspect anything else wrong]

Good read, and I noticed that Ezio doesn't have his fingers cut off for the blades... Odd, since I thought that was a tradition.

I only got one problem , I don't think his costume fits the Italian nobleman character , he just looks like gay Altair ...

They should take the hood off and put a hat with a feather, and make the color of his clothes red and green !

As much as I look forward to how Assassin's Creed 2 will make drastic changes and how this character will play out, I can't help but think I've seen that pose from the movie Moonwalker. If you take away the blades on his wrists, then he appears to be making a jazz hands gesture.

I wouldn't be suprised if Ezio, fabulous as he is, decides to stop fighting guards and they all start to dance to "Thriller."

As much as people mat dislike his 'attire' That's how they dressed in the renaissance.

And his fingers are all in tact, because Altair killed Al Mualim, so many of the Assassin traditions were changed, it would be a bit barbaric to cut fingers off in this time.

I for one cannot wait for the second installment and our new hero. I will still miss Altair though, he was a different kind of bad ass.

Still, as long as everyone else is doing it:

You're kidding, people don't like the clothes? I for one would cosplay Ezio if that was my sort of thing.

Frankly I think the fancy assassin will throw off the guards, they'll think he's weak and feminine and then BAM! Two hidden knives in the throat!

I can't wait for this game. I think he looks fucking sweet, the setting sounds very interesting too.

And let's get this out there, I really liked the original. It's nice to see something other than dogshit space marines or another WW2 game.

It fits though. Remember awhile back when someone said they got to see a "trailer" from the game? It was during a noble's dance and "someone" in a mask is moving through the crowd, kills a guy, madness ensues. That kind of wear would be appropriate. Also it almost makes him a superhero it seems.

Can't wait.

But I liked his design , it makes you unsure if he's gay or just gay looking , but in either way extremely cool ; wich makes you think why you think gays and gaylooking is cool ; wich rapidily turns into a sexual choice confusion ...

It sounds like its shapeing up to be a killer game. Lets hope they addressed the issues a lot of people had with the first one namely the repetition in missions. But from what I've read about it, it sounds like they have. /crossesfingers

McKilligan:"Sticking with the original character being named Eagle, Ezio also means eagle, but this time in Italian"

I'm Italian and Ezio definitely doesn't mean Eagle, not even in Latin.Ezio is just a name...Eagle is Aquila in Italian

I've been getting the information like that from the blogs, my bad for not actually checking any translation like that. Didn't think to check, just went with the stuff I saw on the blogs.

The stuff on the history is from a web page (not wikipedia lol).
