Usually we associate system-selling games with exclusives, not multi-platform releases. But GTA IV has potential to beat Metal Gear Solid 4 to the punch as the next title that moves PS3s.
So why would GTA IV sell PS3s? The game appears to play equally well on either console. If anything, the extra downloadable content available to Xbox 360 owners would tip the scales in favor of the 360 version. And I agree with that. The trouble is, both you and I have probably already bought a console you can play GTA IV on.
WE LIVE TO WIN.
But only around 15 million people in North America own a 360 (11 million) or a PS3 (4 million). A fraction own both. Since the PS2 alone sold nearly 50 million units in North America, the market has some growth potential. The mass market probably still won't adopt at current console prices, but a significant chunk will when a major title comes out. And they don't get much more major than GTA IV.
Many regard Metal Gear Solid as a system-seller because it's an exclusive. Here are the North American sales figures for the Playstation iterations:
MGS: 2.81 million
MGS 2: 2.29 million
MGS 3: 1.42 million
Note the decline.
North American sales figures for PS2 Grand Theft Auto titles:
GTA III: 6.55 million
GTA Vice City: 8.20 million
GTA San Andreas: 8.35 million
Note the upward trend.
For people who haven't bought a next-gen console yet, a few things probably hold true.
- They're not die-hard
online gamers, but may want to try it.
- They don't play a ton of games, so
game library is not a huge concern.
- Like most, they probably don't own a next-gen
optical disc player.
- They may also have delayed adoption for
financial reasons.
For late adopters, many of the 360's advantages -- and it certainly has some advantages -- are not key selling points. When someone finally decides to go and get a console with their tax-return money so they can play GTA IV, the employee in the store will tell them that a PS3 will upgrade both their console and their video equipment for about the same price as the competing standalone console. North American PS3 sales have been matching 360 sales since Warner's January 8 announcement to go Blu, the decisive shot causing the high-definition format wars to grind to a halt.
In some ways, the GTA series is the ultimate in casual gaming. There are millions of people who don't really play many games, but who will pick up a GTA title. Although I predict both 360 and PS3 console hardware will see sales spikes beginning in late April, I believe that PS3 will be the beneficiary of a larger share of the spike.
All numbers from
vgchartz.
In short, not bloody likely.
As for GTA, it seems the 360 version is better as you said but if the rumors are true and the series continues on the PS3 route, well you might be out of luck. That could suck for some "casual" gamers to dish out money for the 360 but only to find they MAY be only able to play the first one.
Plus you have no proof of the attach rates of the PS3 to people buying games. Most of those people are probably buying PS3's to play movies on.
Also, I just don't see why you would think that the PS3 version of GTA IV would outsell the PS3 version. Or at least that is what it sounds like you are saying. If GTA IV is the only reason a person is buying a new system then teh 360 is the obvious choice for two reasons. 1. it is cheaper, and 2. it will have exclusive content.
Now, if they are buying a system for other reasons, I can see why a person would go with the PS3. Simply for the fact that consumers are fucktards. There is a large portion of people that want to get a PS3 simply because it is Sony's next system. I have talked to these people. They want a PS3 when they have no idea what teh alternative has to offer, it is sad really.
So, will the PS3 continue to see a sales in boost, yes. Will GTA IV help, i guess it would. why? Because consumers are stupid.
I think you're on to something here. If Sony was smart, they would have kept the BC of the 60GB in all PS3s for the mere fact that it's easier for one to swallow the notion of buying a PS3 having the ability of still being able to play their entire PS2 library.
If you get someone without either next gen system, I believe they will lean towards a 360 to play GTA for the sole fact that it's cheaper and there's more games to play. I can't wait to see this play out for the simple fact of competition.
As to your incisive statistical analysis, I leave it up to the readers to decide whether a series which is the best-selling game of the year every year it comes out may have some impact on console sales.

As for your next comment, I have no clue what you're trying to say.... so i'll just repeat with more words, correlative numbers DOES NOT mean causal relationship in sales.
And the 360 is cheaper unless you want to play online. Then they're at least the same price. For someone who has never played online before, describing how XBL is superior may not mean much to them. As long as consumers don't know XBL is pay-to-play, Xbox keeps a perceived price advantage.
Finally, I'm just piggybacking off of Jim's article yesterday about how casual gaming is not a type of game, but a style of playing. I think he's right, and GTA is a game that can be all things to all people, but is not generally characterized by extreme difficulty or fierce competitiveness.
I just felt like bitching about numbers not meaning shit since that's the same type of stuff politicians are always doing. "ZOMG! There were X number of violent games released last month, that MUST mean... something retarded" not realizing that limited numbers mean shit until compared to the overall numbers. But even then... statistics always suck, and are usually biased towards the writer's view. (And since yours is opposite of mine, IT CAN'T BE TRUE! :p j/k) (gogo bumping your bogging ranking with pointless ranting)
I was also very amused by Namelessted rant:

LOL..Lemme get this straight Ted..they're dumbasses because they see that paying fifty bucks more for a PS3 nets them the same thing and Blu Ray?? Oh YES..that's dumb.
You do know that most people haven't even beaten most GTA's right? Microsoft's DLC to me just isn't that huge a deal.
Have fun with your 360 Ted. Try not to get stressed out when someone may have an opinion that doesn't stroke Microsoft's dick. That shit will kill you.
My basic logic is this: there are a lot of GTA fans out there (way more than MGS), and not a lot of consoles. Some of those fans who want to play GTA IV will have to buy consoles. [b]Of those who do so[b/], they will choose to buy a PS3 at least as often as a 360, and probably more.
The price advantage is a double-edged sword for 360. If all someone wants a console for is single-player and local multiplayer, then the 360 wins. Once you add online, the 360's price advantage disappears. And once you factor in Blu-ray, the PS3 become more attractive on a cost/feature basis.
So in this case, I would say that only uneducated consumers, or those who know they do not want to play online, would perceive a price gap between the consoles at the moment.
PS3: Established format. Rumors of all future R* games being PS exclusives. The Sony brand name being linked to GTA
360: Cheaper. Guaranteed future DLC. Better online support.
There's pros to both, I guess we'll just have to wait until the numbers come in. FUCK. damnit... we can never escape the numbers. RUN! :p
I just want to point out that this IS NOT a comparison of which system is better. That's been done to death. It doesn't interest me.
This IS an attempt to figure out if people will get off the fence and buy a console to play GTA IV, and if so, which console they will favor.
: )
I agree, most people are still looking to upgrade from a ps2 to a ps3 or 360. The 360's got some good games but its big franchise games have already been released so most people looking to get one already have it.
The ps3 has some great games, but none of the sony franchise games have been released yet so there should be alot more people waiting to get ps3's than 360s.
So if you were just looking for a system for GTAIV and could get built in wi-fi, free online, a more reliable system, and blu-ray for only $50 more why wouldn't you get a ps3? You'd have to be pretty stupid not to.
360s outnumber PS3s in N.A. by such a large margin that I honestly can't see any way the PS3 version would sell more. I think in Europe it will sell slightly more.
LOL, I realize it's a Playstation site.
I also realize it's outnumber, hardware wise in N.A.
Only thing is that IF it's BIG in Japan... It WILL sell moar on the PSTriples vs 360! I know, I know, Americans will be more attached to this specific title.
Maybe GTAIV will find the light in Japan? & Japan will bring a second title* back to it's home platform. Sales wise. ( DMC4* )
I'm going to go with Y0j1mb0 on this and say that most people don't beat GTA as I myself have yet to beat one. I play like 5 missions use cheats to get all the weapons and then I have FUN and that's all that matters.
Mxy makes a good point that the casual gamers who are willing to buy in at the current console prices may have already blown their loads on Halo 3, Guitar Hero III, and Rock Band. But I can't help but think there are still a lot of people on the fence right now who will pick a side for GTA IV, and who will more easily justify the cost of a PS3 by comparison to the high price of standalone Blu-ray players.
The best solution for me is just to find a gamer roommate. I don't really want to invest in a console just to tool around Virtual Brighton Beach for an hour.
with a simultaneous release it's a little foggy about what will sell what, but i know MGS4 is a console pusher for me.
